The ABC has suspended the Chaser's War on Everything program for two weeks.

The suspension follows widespread criticism of a sketch that satirised the Make a Wish foundation which aired last Wednesday night.

In a statement, the ABC says the suspension will give the program time to complete a review of editorial approval processes.

ABC managing director Mark Scott made the decision following the controversy surrounding The Chaser's sketch, 'Make A Realistic Wish Foundation', that went to air on Wednesday night.

The Chaser later issued a statement on its website, saying the group does not agree with the ban but wanted to apologise for the sketch.

The skit purported to be from a foundation which "helps thousands of kids to lower their extravagance and selfishness".

It signed off with the line: "Why go to any trouble when they're only going to die anyway?"

The sketch drew the anger of many, including the real Make A Wish Foundation and the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd; Mr Rudd said The Chaser team should hang their heads in shame.

Mr Scott has apologised for the distress caused, admitting the sketch had gone too far.

"While unintended, it has caused considerable concern and distress particularly to parents of seriously ill children," he said.

The decision to suspend the show, made with the ABC's Director of Television Kim Dalton, followed discussions with The Chaser team.

"We have decided that this is the most appropriate course of action," Mr Scott said.

"It gives the ABC an opportunity to complete a review of editorial approval processes. It also gives The Chaser a chance to regroup and review their material.

"In making the wrong judgement call we have let down our audience and the wider community. We need to fully review the ABC's approval processes for programs that deliberately challenge public attitudes."

The Chaser's War on Everything will return to ABC1 on Wednesday nights from June 24.

this is an Australian TV show, right? for a minute I thought this was an American show when I saw "ABC".
