Hi Everyone,
I just recently put together a new blu-ray setup. I have a PS3 slim connected to LCD via HDMI, and audio through Toslink going to my very classic yamaha ddp-2 dolby digital decoder.
Now here's the nub: when playing videos with dolby digital sound at 640 Kbps bitrates, the sound becomes garbled and jumpy. You can only hear every 3rd word of the dialogue, and the rest of the audio is like playing a vinyl record with a broken needle. This happens for both HD video files (m2ts) or HD DVDs that carry the said bitrate. Any other video with bitrates of 384-448 on the other hand sounds just fine.
I know the limitation of optical cables for HD audio, and I know that the PS3 downmixes outputs of such kind to 640Kbps, but then again toslink should be more than capable of carrying that bandwidth right?
Is it possible that its the DDP-2 that can't process the 640Kbps properly? After all it is a 1998 product and a dinosaur now by such standards.
If it is the reciever that's not capable of coping, would anyone out there know if the built in decoder in the LG HT554TM-A2 be capable of handling Dolby Digital at 640Kbps? Much as I would love to buy a new HDMI capable receiver, I just don''t have the budget for it yet, and the LG player is on promo at 50% off
Thank you in advance for your assistance in extending and improving my viewing pleasure. I look forward to your helpful insights and inputs.
