Audio Problems With PS3 Setup
« on: Jan 11, 2010 at 11:11 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I just recently put together a new blu-ray setup. I have a PS3 slim connected to LCD via HDMI, and audio through Toslink going to my very classic yamaha ddp-2 dolby digital decoder.

Now here's the nub: when playing videos with dolby digital sound at 640 Kbps bitrates, the sound becomes garbled and jumpy. You can only hear every 3rd word of the dialogue, and the rest of the audio is like playing a vinyl record with a broken needle. This happens for both HD video files (m2ts) or HD DVDs that carry the said bitrate. Any other video with bitrates of 384-448 on the other hand sounds just fine.

I know the limitation of optical cables for HD audio, and I know that the PS3 downmixes outputs of such kind to 640Kbps, but then again toslink should be more than capable of carrying that bandwidth right?

Is it possible that its the DDP-2 that can't process the 640Kbps properly? After all it is a 1998 product and a dinosaur now by such standards.

If it is the reciever that's not capable of coping, would anyone out there know if the built in decoder in the LG HT554TM-A2 be capable of handling Dolby Digital at 640Kbps? Much as I would love to buy a new HDMI capable receiver, I just don''t have the budget for it yet, and the LG player is on promo at 50% off  :P

Thank you in advance for your assistance in extending and improving my viewing pleasure. I look forward to your helpful insights and inputs.

That could be your culprit right there.  Dolby Digital from standard DVD is only 448 kbps max.  DD from BD is 640 kbps max.   You may want to check what's the highest bitrate your DD processor can take.

Hmm...

That's what I was afraid of. I guess it's now up to the HTIB that I bought.

Thank you so much for your inputs. Crossing my fingers that the LG HTIB works for me.

Will update once I've tried and tested it.

Happy to report that it was the Yamaha DDP-2 that could not handle the audio bit rate.

Connected the PS3 toslink to the optical auxiliary port of the LG HTIB and sound output of 640 Kbps works like a charm.

 Thanks for the assistance.

guys, a little help please.

i plan to get a ps3 slim 120gb. having read this thread, i wondered if my receiver can handle the audio. i want to be sure that when i connect it, it will work. otherwise, double expense for me.

my receiver is a yamaha rx-v363. went to the yamaha site but it doesnt say anything about it, or im too much of a rookie that i dont know what im looking for.

any reply will be very much appreciated. thanks.

based on the 363's specs. its hdmi can only do video pass through. so it can't do audio, but dont worry, since the yamaha has optical (toslink) inputs. your ps3 can still be connected to it and can still produce surround sound. although it will only decode dolby digital and dts classic and not the newer hd audio codecs like tru hd and dts-ma.

thank you, sir iiinas!

i believe i can live with that until i upgrade my receiver. on the video side, i know its possible to connect the ps3 directly to the tv via hdmi cable. my tv is not a full hd tv, its only hd ready 1080p (regza cv500). i also know that the ps3 is a bd player thats designed for a full hd tv.

wont i damage my tv? what can i and cant i expect?

please enlighten me.

no, it wont damage the lcd panel. you dont have to worry about that, what you will miss is if you play a bd movie is, the lcd panel will downscale the 1080p video signal to 720p (which is your panel's native resolution). i have a 720p panel myself. so dont worry.

and bd movies played on 720p panel still looks great.  ;)
