Since NAS naman yung pinaguusapan, I hope TS wouldn't mind if I asked this: ano mas ok between Synology and Qnap? Thinking of getting one, but don't know what to look at.

The models Im currently looking at are:

Synology DS212j
Qnap TS-212

TIA  ;D

TS baka gusto mo din iconsider yung NAS na nabanggit ko, around S$380-400 (13k) ang price range.

mas maganda yung Synology if i were to choose.  ;D ;D

I've also used DROBO before and was quite happy with it.

Why don't you consider Mediasonic 8bay or 4bay cases and then hook it up to a router with USB storage support?

I use NAS for my personal backup for important files (work, family photos, music)
I use 4-bay storage enclosures for HD contents since I move both files and disks across NMTs.

If you see yourself moving disks around often (i.e. from NMT/HTPC to the storage , or copy/move files between disks, I'd go for the multibay enclosures directly attached to the NMT or HTPC)

A NAS formatted disk in a certain RAID cannot be moved to an NMT without reformat.

For HD playback, I just prefer direct attached I/O (USB 2 and USB 3) over wired/wireless LAN.

Maganda din yung Synology kasi yung 8 bay puwede mo pa expand with 8 bay din. Even yung ibang size puwede mo din expand ;D ;D ;D

sir,

can you PM me paano niyo sinet up? I'm planning this kind of setup kasi. problem ko lang is konti lang ang router na gigabit LAN and 2 USB ports.

This is exactly my setup, with 2 x (4 x 2TB) due for change drives to 3TB to house by BD.iso.

BD.ISO sucks up the most I/O transfer and even at USB 2.0 mediasonic 4 bay lang ok naman, my folders are split A-E,F-J,K-O,P-T,U-Z as a preference, pero puede mo din gawin if you are on HTPC is to mount to folder like : /TV Series , /Movies, /Movie Series, /Animation where each would be a disk.

If playback lang of 1080p, stay out of RAIDs
If very important yung files to you (personal photo and video), I let my N3200 pro do that for my personal files.

HTH

USB 2.0 is ok for playback, with little copying into it.
USB 3.0 is ok for playback and transfer files between disks.

4 bay enclosure ako which connects to 1 USB port if via router
If sa nmt, enable samba file share and /or upnp

ok.. plano ko kasi wired network para every room can access my library. But wala akong idea sa pagsetup.  all i know is I need, an NMT with LAN, router with Gigabit LAN port and at most 2 USB ports (One for broadband dongle).

tama naman

- just look for a router/gateway that would have at least 100 MBPS

between sharing sa NMT and sa router, i'd share them sa router , then puro NMT/laptops na lang access per room

- even sa wireless ok naman network share, but 1080p might be a challenge sa wireless so wired its still the best.

Thanks sir for your tip. decide muna ako between hdd enclosure or NAS. nakaset na sa mind ko mag 3TB internal HDD. gusto kasi hindi nakaconnect sa pc palagi yun 3TB para hindi mapasukan ng malwares. at the same time. i have been thinking of discarding the PC totally to reduce electric consumption.

mura yan given 5k na ang 2TB alone.

i also saw sa amazon yung dual bay, i think tanggalable yung disks din

torrent, cloud share apart from LAN sharing and airplay etc seems a common and popular promise ng NAS these days apart from the RAID.

This is great! Thank for the info.

Dows this also mean that if I have the DLNA apps, I can use my mobile devices such as the iPad as my player of music stored at the NAS HDD?  Which means I do not have to transfer the files to my iPad, and directly play the music files from the NAS HDD.

Yes sir thats correct...

I have downloaded a free DLNA apps and it does this.. Since its free i'm limited to playing only one file at a time. I'm still exploring how to play playlist or full album or add to now playing list...

This apps is cool because you can choose which device to render as well...
