Afaik, its main drawback is that it's only limited to <4GiB files with directly connected USB drives. Unless you save the files into the built-in HDD (small in stock form) or stream it off the network, it can be quite inconvenient.

The supported file types are also fewer.

yes, the main drawback is PS3 is using fat32 file system which has a file size limitation of 4gb. it cannot read NTFS HDs which is also a drawback. moreover, its couldn't read mkv files (hopefully, they add this to the codec soon).. Honestly, I use my PS3 as NMT. I just select my videos to be less than 4gb and uses video formats recognized by PS3. :D

in my case, as far as i remember, i used my ps3 as NMT way back 2 years ago and installed PS3 Media Manager on my PC and was able to stream mkv's to my ht, via wired switch connections.

yup, it can use streaming to play mkvs.. but its better if they add it to PS3's codec. :D

hi pao, it is necessary to wire your pc/laptop to your router then you can stream to PS3 wirelessly. it is also recommended that you have at least a dual core proc to do the transcoding duties.

wiring system to router usually resolves 90% of the stutter. wag na po tayong umasa sa 1080p streaming via wifi with ps3's "g" wifi.  ;D HTH

PS3 alone can't play mkv and doesn't support ntfs.

@pao
yeah i remember seeing it in amazon for 100+ dollars. if that's the case, better buy another wireless router of the same brand, connect it to the ps3 and make it an access point para draft n na din yung ps3.

@duke
wired tlaga recommended but i'm able to play most movies w/o stutter via my setup (laptop wired). what do you mean by full buffer? afaik, i cannot see it loading/buffering in advance while in pause or stop mode. i thought the transcoding is done in real time during streaming.

but nmt is still the best solution since low power consumption lang yung unit.

did copied an mp4 file to my ps3. it plays but no audio is playing except when playing it in 1.5x speed or disabling the AAC support in audio settings. the problem when disabling AAC is it is only plays 2ch audio.

anyone here experiencing this?

I got mine at best buy for $80 each. I've been using it to stream 1080p movies.

The problem with getting another router and creating a wireless bridge is that router 2 should get a good signal from router 1 to be effective. IF the main router is in room 1 and the ps3 is in room 2 with a weak wifi signal coming from room1, adding a bridge won't help that much.

In our house, there are places which don't have wifi signal. So what I did is plug these powerlines to routers to act as access points. Now we have wifi all over the house.

I remember seeing powerlines at greenhills for 4.5K. If you plan on getting one, make sure you get the gigabit powerlines not the 85mbps ones

im using also my macbook as my server. pag 1080p sya, pag pause ko nagfufull yung buffer nya sa main page ng ps3 media program. also sa settings, nilalagay ko sa max yung buffer (600mb or kb yata). sa simula kasi nag stutter sya pag hindi ko pause yung movie.
