Media Players that support PGS Subtitles
« on: Jun 12, 2011 at 04:28 PM »
What are PGS Subtitles?

PGS Subtitles are high definition subtitles that are native to nearly all Bluray Discs.

Hence when backing them up, pretty much you will be ripping them out with the Video & Audio tracks.

The reason you don't see much of these included in MKV files is that there's so few media players that can play them back if found within the MKV container. Hence there is a entire community of users who take these subtitles and convert them to whatever standard their PC/Media Player supports. The issue is that there's almost always going to be some translation problems.

Hence the optimum is really to just be able to play the PGS subtitles so they are "original" to the source instead of converted.

You can test for yourself if your existing media player will display them by using this sample you can download;

Batman PGS Test.

Feel free to chime in if your player can display them or not.

I've suggested to an encoding group specializing in Remux (Untouched 1080p in MKV) with PGS subs to add SRT into the MKV container.  They said "NO" - too purists even on the quality of sub texts - and emphasized that the issue is a problem that should be addressed by the media player maker since a PC can handle the rip perfectly well. Ok fair enough.

So I've been busy lately doing the muxing myself of the pure audio, video, PGS and SRT in an MKV container.  Inconvenient but the result is great on the PCH-A200 - it's just too frustrating to watch a full length movie in pure BD glory but with PGS subs that simply won't sync perfectly - it's not enough that a player can display PGS subs.  Now, I'm very curious to test PGS in MKV via the Mede8er.

PGS in m2ts works absolutely perfect via the A200 and Mede8er though - tried and tested.

I tried the sample file using xtreamer pro. It didn't show up although when I went through the subtitle section, it indicated an english subtitle being present.

Tried this in VLC first, i got :

No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format "undf". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.

resolved, with latest VLC 1.1.10

I use VLC to test for sync issues.

You can check my actual testing here;
