Steps in Calibrating Your HT
« on: Apr 01, 2014 at 12:57 PM »
Guys, kindly share your steps in adjusting or calibrating your HT gears. I don't know if I am doing correctly or I am missing some steps.  Here's how I did mine:

1.  Manually adjusted all the the speakers to 80 Hz as per THX recommendations and at 0 db.
2.  Adjusted the LPF of LFE at 120 hz  from the receiver
3. Adjusted the subwoofer's volume knob to half and the cut off frequency to 80 Hz
4.  Plug the Audyssey mic to receiver and automatically run the calibration.
5.  Checked the SPL reading using smartphone and all of the speakers are giving 91 db while sub was giving 81 db.

When I checked the speaker settings,  they are no longer at 80 Hz; Left and Right speakers are now set at 40 Hz, while the surround speakers are  now at 60 Hz.
Here are my questions:
1.  Should I leave the speakers with that setting or should I adjust it back to 80 Hz setting?
2.  If I will counter check my settings using a smartphone's SPL meter, should I get same db reading for all speakers for me to say that the speakers are now calibrated?

I might be doing it the wrong way, kindly recommend the correct steps for calibrating the HT. Thanks

^ you may revert back the crossover frequency to 80Hz if you like..it was calibrated that way because it means your speakers can handle thos frequencies..

on the subwoofer..I normally set the cut off to 120Hz

I also normally calibrate the subwoofer first to get a 0db reading on the level by running the Audyssey in the main listening position..after that I run the audyssey again, this time for all speakers, then I manually adjust the crossover frequency..like adjusting the fronts for 40Hz to 80Hz etc..and other settings as well..I know I did well with the calibration when the center speaker level is 0 or very close to it like (+-)1-2db..

placement of speakers and sub is also a factor and i think room acoustics as well.

The smartphone's mic is not flat. You need a better mic. The reading on an iPhone 5 for example will roll off after 100hz. Any reading below that will be wrong. For the iPhone, Dayton makes  good microphones.

Other smartphones will have similar responses. Don't rely on them.

Eto lang ang nakita ko na parang mali. The subwoofer's cut-off frequency should either be set to bypass, or kung walang bypass switch, turn it to the highest frequency possible and let your receiver set the cut-off frequency for the sub.

Many thanks for your inputs. I reviewed again the manual for the sub, and pag yung " LFE in"  ang connection from receiver to the sub, frequency cross over setting sa subwoofer will be automatically bypassed. I have used the "LFE in" so I guess no need for me to adjust it to 120 hz. Many thanks again for the help.
