Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced a special edition of the 1987 Rob Reiner directed The Princess Bride which stars Robin Wright Penn, Cary Elwes and Billy Crystal. The set will be available to own from the 16th June, and should set you back around $24.96 in total. The film itself will be presented in anamorphic widescreen, along with an English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround track. Extras will include a Dread Pirate Roberts: Legend of the Seven Seas mockumentary, a featurette entitled Love is Like a Storybook Story, a Miraculous Make-Up featurette, a Quotable Battle of Wits Trivia Game, an As You Wish Featurette, Cary Elwes' Home Video footage, and more. The set will arrive in two packages - designed for seperate male and female audiences. As far as we are aware, both will be identical features wise.

Review from DVDtalk Member:

I ordered the Buttercup edition of PRINCESS BRIDE, and I must say I'm very disappointed with the video quality of the release. I noticed:

1. The movie has been crammed onto a single-layer, single-density DVD with an abominable bitrate. The feature only consumes 3.1 GB of space!! Resulting in a lousy, soft picture, and many compression artifacts. If a higher bitrate was used (and a RSDL DVD) the "High Definition Remaster" would have been noticable. Instead, it seems to be a mess.

2. The 2-Disc special edition isn't really "special" because given number 1 above, they could have crammed the Special features & movie on one RSDL DVD. (The Special features have also been crammed onto a 4.7 GB DVD) Instead it is another example of "making the consumer think he gets more" when he does not.

3. The release was unnecessarly botched because of a bad transfer and bad compression job.

Surely, I can't be the only one to have noticed these annoying problems! Seems someone needs to hire a better DVD Authoring Person(s).

Are they crazy? Releasing two separate covers for what is supposedly a superior edition, then releasing such a compressed copy.... or do they deliberately do it, so that the Bluray version will be lightyears ahead in terms of PQ...

I just checked my old local DVD5 Princess Bride, released by Magnavision awhile ago... and it's 4.15GB... so hopefully compression techniques have improved, or else that expensive new edition will be a big waste of money....

That local DVD5 is selling for just 150. Regular price, not sale price...

Note on local Copy: NO subtitles, even if English and French was listed on the back.
