Then the pi*** BD copies being sold here are just BD transfer to DVD 9. However, the PQ and AQ are very much like original DVDS! sometimes even better bec some R3 titles are released in Fullscreen format only while pi*** BD transfer to DVD9 are widescreen ;D

BD to DVD-9 transcode sells at only P60.  That's different from the fake BD, around P300 equivalent abroad, but around P700 each here.  Yes, fake BDs, true 1080p, readable by blue lasers only, are available in the Philippines, but they're very rare here.

Sinasabi ko lang naman na meron talagang ganun.  Baka hindi kayo maniwala kaya dinagdagan ko ng konting details... pero konti lang... hanggang dun na lang ang detalye...  ;D

yup the PS3 upscales in the level of Pio 600. if ever may difference not very much.

I have to disagree.  The PS3 is an outstanding upscaler, more to the level of the Oppo 983 than the Pio 600.

hmmmm...i thought that in the last shootout, the PS3 bested even the Oppo and that the Oppo bested the Pio.  now am confused.

I think that in the shootout the 983 Oppo was tops and the Pio 600 was at the bottom.  Now that I have both PS3 and 983 I can compare their DVD upscaling performance.  I haven't done so critically but based on my very raw initial impressions, the PS3 upscales with a little more detail than even the mighty 983. But then I haven't experimented with tweaking the 983 yet.

Upscaled DVD versus BD?  On my set-up noticeable ang superiority in detail extraction ng BD.

Regarding the question, the difference in picture quality between upscaled DVD and bluray is day and night.  No matter how you upscale SD.. it won't top that of HD.  If you want the best pq, bluray pa rin (as of now).

i think in the shootout PS3 was playing BD and Pio was playing DVD of the same scene. If I am not mistaken 1st Popcorn 2nd BD30 3rd Pio 4th Oppo.

yup probably, as i don't use my PS3 extensively as upconverting player. Tested it using The Rock Criterion lang and to me not much of a diff between PS3 and Pio. However, with the Rock BD  :o

again for me sayang naman yung lens ng PS3 kung gagamitin lang sa DVD watching  ;)

Oh was there a 2nd shootout?  Whatever, i was refering to the first shootout at streetsmart's place which was documented in the Oppo 983 thread. That was a comparison of how well upscaling is implemented by different makes.

Agree, I don't use the PS3 for DVDs myself until recently when curiosity on how well it upscales got to me. Besides most of my DVDs are R1 and my PS3 is R3.

Honestly, to see the full benefit of viewing 1080p Blu-ray, you have to sit around 4 feet from your 32 inch display.

the chart below is a very good guide

if i may ask... when using a 42" 720p (HD ready) display from a viewing distance of about 8 ft, would there be a diff in pq b/w upscaling dvd and bluray?  or maybe the first question should be: is there a diff when using upscaling vs bluray on a 720p display, regardless?

for me yes there is a difference. Example -Tears of the Sun BD you can see the lipstick of Bruce Willis and the other cast while for SD not so much. For MI-2 BD and MI-2 SD it's a different story  ???

this is just my opinion and others might feel otherwise. suggestion is audition mo na lang and see for yourself. mayron niyan sa ating mga suking AV Stores. Problem lang is baka wala sila na movie which is available for both BD and SD  ;)

tama si sir vtec, most of the time if viewed on the same distance, in this case 8ft for 720p, there should be a difference. but as stated by sir vtec, there are some movies that have not that good transferes to bluray that sometimes you will see very little to no difference between bd and sddvd. pero in my opinion, mga 10-15% siguro sa total available bds. kaya its also good to look at the reviews of the bds para hindi ka magsisi, mahal din kasi bds.

thanks sirs vtec and iinas.  your inputs are helpful.  haven't made that jump yet to bluray and one of the main reasons is still the cost of the bds (not to mention the potential improvements in pq).  so far, i can still live with dvd's but who knows...  :-\  i just might give in...  :D
