Topic: PS3 w/ LINUX installed as its other OS.

Anyone there who can help me out w/ this? I'm suppose to buy from someone a 2nd hand 60gb PS3. Upon checking the unit, i noticed there"s A INSTALL OTHER OS in its menu. When i ask about it, the seller told me that he installed Linux as its other OS and it can be removed if i dont want it. My question is WILL IT AFFECT THE PERFORMANCE OF THE PS3? WILL IT CORRUPT THE ORIGINAL OS OF THE PS3? Someone told me that linux is used to manipulate the ps3 and its bad for the system. He adviced me not to buy it coz problems may occur. If there's anyone out there knowlegeable of this pls share to me wat u know. TNX!!!

nope it doesn't affect it at all, you can reformat the HD if you want

It will be installed in a separate partition so it shouldn't be an issue. Some actually install linux and vlc so they can play mkv files on the ps3

I tried to connect a memory stick w/ mkv files of only 700mb yet its not recognized by the ps3. The main purpose of buying a PS3 is for me to enjoy downloaded  hi def movies and enjoy it on the bravia lcd. I intend to buy a 320gb xternal hard drive and coonect to ps3 via usb.

you have to convert the mkv files, xvid/divx complaint files are good

How can i covert mkv files so that its playable by the ps3? I tried downloading the tversity software but stil m not able to convert it to the proper codec recognizable by the ps3.

Tnx a lot DARKWING for all the knowledge u shared to me w/ regards to the PS3. Now i feel confident buying the 60gb PS3. If ever i will encounter some problems i hope u can find some time help me out.

Using linux and vlc, you might encounter some slowdown when playing hi-def mkv files through the ps3. Aside from the method mentioned you can download mkv2vob to convert your mkv files. I actually have a couple of music videos converted this way.

Sir JOHN 5479 can u relate to me the process on how to convert those hi def files so its playable on the ps3? I really wana c how planet earth in hi def downloadable at MINI NOVA can amaze me. I do have a dvd9 copy of PLANET EARTH 1-6 but i'm really not impressed as shown thru dvd. I'm viewing it on a SONY BRAVIA KLV40V300A.

Download mkv2vob and through your pc just select the mkv files and the program should convert them. There shouldn't be any problems as the file you mentioned has AC3 for its audio.

John5479 i just downloaded an mkv2vob rar as i extract there's a folder has has tools in it. the other file is the mkv2vob exe when i installed the mkv2vob exe i treid to convert mkv files to vob but it was rejected is sai bunsupported a_acc.  Wat should i do then? By the way. wat version of ps3 are u using? Do you agree the 60gb version although faced out is better then the brand new 40gb models raining the market now?

mkv2vob can only convert mkvs with ac3 used as audio. You would have to use the other method instead. I am using an asian 60gb ps3:)
