connecting a power amp
« on: Jun 04, 2008 at 11:09 PM »
not sure if this belongs here or sa interconnects... question is, if your AVR has pre-outs and you add a power amp through that, that makes your avr the pre-amp/processor na, right? second question is, what do you use to connect the two? digital co-axial cables? or audio interconnects/cables? TIA  :)

Both will work fine provided that they are of good quality and sheilded... the only difference of the two is their conductor wires... good luck..  ;D

price can be a factor, whether you buy finished cables or have them fabricated (unless you go for exotic rca cables). plus, finished co-ax cables are too long for pre/pro to poweramp connections, better if you buy 1.5m -2m of good quality shielded rca cable then have it split into five sections then terminated by good quality plus. since you'll need 10, you can go to audiophile greenhills and get yourself Klotz mic cable, 2m will be approximately P140 then 10x neutrik plugs at P75ea.

To answer your questions bro,

Yes, your AVR will act as your pre/pro.

You can use any of the two, ProtegeManiac is right, get a Klotz cable and a nutrik plug, i'm also using this kind of interconnect and so far so good naman. It's available at MCS (Makati Cinema Square 3rd level), they can make the IC for you, since i'm using a 5-channel power amp, i bought 4 meters of klotz cable and divided it into 5 (80 cm each) then i bought 10 nutrik plugs for the 5 ICs, it only cost me 1K including labor, you may want to try it bro, Goodluck ;)

thanks for the input guys. much obliged.
BTW, may specific model ba yung klotz cables? Also, when it's soldered to the RCA plug, do you use the copper sheath as a channel and combine the 2 center wires  or yung 2 sa gitna lang talaga as (+) and (-)? (did that make sense ???)

if the klotz cable has 2 wires+ sheathing, the best connection is, use 1 wire as (+) and other as (-). to get the better sheilding, solder the (-) wire together w/ the copper sheathing @one end and don't connect @the other end (purpose is not to transmit EMI/RFI collected by the sheilding to the system). use the marking of the cable as your guide in soldering, also as the direction in the connection.

The combined end should be connected from the source unit (CD-preamp or Preamp-Amp) and other end the receiving unit.

btw, the klotz cable has 2 types, one has 2 wires which you can use as (+) and (-) and the other type has 3 wires, the extra wire for grounding, you can use both, i used the one with wire for grounding ;)
