6bm8 power pentode and triode combi tube
« on: Jul 13, 2009 at 03:01 PM »
any users of this tube? feedbacks appreciated.

looks like an el84/6bq5 tube, same 9pins but inside is a combination of power pentode and triode.

just heard an Allied 333 / pioneer sx34 jap receiver using 4 6bm8 tubes. i was really impressed and amazed with its sound quality. the bass and lower mids excelled- very sweet, rich, fullbodied and lush really tubey! the upper mids and treble were abit on the laidback side.  im contemplating on having an STC integrated built for me...just waiting to hear another 6bm8 based amp - calrad.

It's not just the tubes, it was how it was used and the sum of the parts that were used(like the output iron) in the amp that created the magic.... ;D

i had a simple pp- el84 amp that had fabulous sound...circa 70's

agree! my friend happens to have spare 6bm8s and its still available at watsons (priced the same as nos ge 6bq5)... btw 6bq5 is my fave among common power tubes. very sweetsounding in my amp. i think it used a stromberg-carlsonn inspired circuit...

if you can find an old but working "Constellation" radio, you will find the philips equivalent of that 6bm8, these radios really sound good....SET amps are to be found in many of those radios and even b&w tv sets, we owned an Admiral 21 inch tv's in the 60's, it used a 6aq5 output in a SEP format, and i remeber that the sound was so fantastic.... ;D

hi,
pm gerry who is also a member here, he sells 11BM8's i think for 280 each....they are NOS and he has plenty of them....

if you are building from scratch, you can have a costum filament winding made for 11volts...
