HDMI QUESTION
« on: Sep 22, 2009 at 01:42 AM »

If you have a receiver which accepts HDMI, you can connect the HDMI from your DVD player into your receiver. And one HDMI cable goes from the receiver to the TV.

Your receiver's HDMI must either be of the repeater or pass-through type in order for it to carry an audio signal along with video, otherwise if what you have is only a switcher... only video is transported through HDMI.

HDMI doesn't really enhance lossy codecs such as Dolby Digital and DTS. Personally, I prefer to connect the HDMI from the DVD player directly to the TV and just use optical/coaxial cable for the sound.

If you have Blu-ray, then HDMI is definitely the way to go since that's the only way you'll get to transport lossless codecs via HDMI.

guys got a question.

i recently bought a full HD tv with HTz220, i just noticed that when using my old player (non HDMI pioneer) shows that the picture is much better but when i play the same DVD on the HT DVD player, the output looks pixelated.

any suggestion on my set up? how can i make the output on HT better?

thanks!

How is the connection made between your TV and your non HDMI pioneer? and your HTz220?  Ofhand I can only surmise that your TV is doing a better job at upscaling with analog video input than your Samsung HTIB via HDMI.  Unless your Samsung has the upscaling feature turned of.

using the pioneer dvd player the picture has no visible pixels (small squares) i only used the normal AV cable to connect it with samsung 32b550.

HTz220 connected thru HDMI cable to the TV, shows visible pixels. is this normal or my setup is wrong?

I might be missing something as I don't see anything wrong in your connection.  Seems simple enough.

(1) The AV cable from you pioneer sends analog 480i video and the LCD TV converts it to digital, de-interlaces and upscales it to the LCD's native 1080p res.

(2) Your Samsung HTIB presumably upscales and de-interlaces the 480i video signal and sends an upscaled 1080p signal via HDMI to your LCD which does nothing on the video signal.

If the video quality of (1) is better than (2), the only conclusion I could think of is that the LCD TV does a better de-interlacing and upscaling job, than Samsung HTIB.

Try connecting the Samsung HTIB using the same AV cables you used with the Pioneer and check the resulting video.  Perhaps the video gurus here can pitch in their 2 cents.

Try setting the HTIB in different resolutions as well. Some work better in a lower res (like 720p), because there's not enough processing power for busy scenes... otherwise try the full blown 1080p setting (especially if the TV supports it). A lot of these players default to 480p (or sometimes 480i), so please also confirm your current setting.

As av_phile mentioned, there are also times when the TV does a better job in scaling.

thank guys for your advice.

i think it has something to do with the dvd disc.. i recently bought a high def dvd movie and tested it on the HT and  finally got the result i want..the previous dvd i bought using my non hdmi player most of the time have 9 movies in 1 cd.

i still can figure out though why when i play my old cd's on HT shows pixels and non-hdmi shows none. yep, i tried to set the setting to 480p, 720p, etc. but nothing changed.. i guess ill use non-hdmi player for watching my old dvd's instead.

I see, you were using a pirated DVD9 with 9 movies in it which have low res low-bitrates.  There's no such thing as a "high def dvd." you probably mean standard legit DVDs with the right bitrates.   High def is reserved to Blu Ray disks.

I think I can nail your problem to the fact that your Pioneer is sending anti-aliased analog images of low resolution to your LCD TV which does a good job of upscaling it to 1080p. So you really won't see much pixellation because the anti-aliasing is also upscaled.   On the other hand, your Samsung sends a more unforgiving upscaled low-res digital image over HDMI which, without any anti-aliasing or dithering done by the TV,  will display the image in all its horrible upscaled pixellation.   If your TV had been a Plasma instead of an LCD, you might have gotten better results as a Plasma's temporal dithering is more forgiving of low res images.
