Help PC-Audio Setup
« on: Apr 28, 2011 at 10:40 PM »
I love and appreciate good sound but my knowledge regarding the setup is quite very very limited.
I hate my pc -audio output very flat and dull.
Music output is not "sparkling".
I want to buy an Asus Xonar STX which cost near 12k here and very rare - very overpriced considering it just cost 8-9k abroad.
Any alternative for a semi-pro audio - i mean alternative for a soundcard?
Does a DAC - smoothen the audio coming from my motherboard?Im afraid if i buy a dac but my source is still my motherboard the audio imperfections would still be present.
Im using an M-Audio AV40 speaker.
My budget is 10k max.

You can start by a very cheap solution, buying an ENMAB-8CM DAC (http://cdrking.com/index.php?mod=products&type=view&sid=6354&main=91). Sounds far better that the on-board PC DACs, IMHO.

Hope this helps.

Hope this would help though I may not be an expert. My PC audio used to be dull and flat too. I then installed a plugin to my Winamp player and the sound quality was better and added life to the music. You can also try using Sonic Music player with a plugin. I am just using the built in soundcard and I did not use any kind of new hardware. Have you also hearing the music audio from a Mac computer? The music is more on the warm side and "thicker" . The Asus soundcard might also be a risk as you still don't know if this will improve the sound quality drastically.

Here is my set-up. Im also a newbie and learned a lot from PDVD.

Im using my sony vaio laptop as source of my music audio output on USB plus a HTPC with Optical Out.

At first, I bought a DAYTON DTA-1 T-amp for 3,500.

I auditioned the Dayton DTA-1 in watts hifi in MCS plus I bought also the MIssion MV2 speakers for 5,500

I connected it on the laptops 3.5mm audio jack, It sounded OK but medyo bitin, Then after a week, I bought a Superpro 707 DAC for 5,500 which in USB mode can output 16 bit and in Optical/coax mode can output 24bit.

I auditioned the Dayton DTA-1 in watts hifi in MCS plus I bought also the MIssion MV2 speakers for 5,500.

Im very much happy right now with my Sound Set-up in my small room.

Total cost is 14,500 plus good wires and banana plugs.

an alternative is to buy a 2nd hand receiver and use a mini stereo to rca.
from your soundcard connect the mini stereo plug and the rca to the left and right input of the receiver, and you can also use it for 5.1 by using 3 sets of mini stereo to rca. and some receiver have DAC already and 2nd hand receivers here in pdvd ranges from 5k to 10k which is pasok sa budget mo  ;)

Whats your amp and do you connect your PC to amp? In my experience PC analog out to amp is not good. I use itunes and connect the audio digitally to amp. I vary its customizable EQ to make it sound to my liking ergo making the speakers sparkle. It also helps if you play lossless.
