Resident Evil: Degeneration (R3)
« on: Feb 14, 2009 at 06:05 PM »
I passed by a few video stores and saw DVDs of Resident Evil: Degeneration. It's being sold for P550 while its Blu-ray version is priced at P1,550.

Has anyone bought and watched the DVD? Is it worth full price or not?

Bought the DVD for 475. I'd say it's worth it even though the movie kinda sucked. It was actually pretty boring. The movie is set before the events of Resident Evil 4 so he zombies are the old slow and shuffling kind. No Las Plagas here. Some special features are quite entertaining especially the Voice Bloopers. I'm a videogamer and a completist so it was a no-brainer for me to buy this at full price. Resident Evil 5 is just around the corner so if you are a fan of the series, I'd say buy it.

In recent weeks, I've been hearing negative reviews about RE: Degeneration from the media, gamers and movie collectors, which made me doubtful about its DVD/Blu-ray releases.

Are you sure it's not after? I always thought this was an in-between 4 and 5.

You're right. I just read it in Gamex magazine that the movie actually takes place after RE4. But if you watch the movie though, it may as well be pre RE4. There's no setup for RE5 and going back to the T-Virus and G-Virus plot made it feel like a step back storywise. Hunnigan (who works with Leon from RE4) actually makes a brief appearance from Leon's communicator. But it was already established that Leon has being working with for the President years before the events of RE4.

I didn't really get that impression since, chronologically, RE4 was made years before Degeneration and that is why I've always assumed that this was an in-between promo for RE5. Why make a prequel to one of your past games when you have an upcoming new one? If this was a prequel, they would have to set it up by foreshadowing events in RE4, especially the Las Plagas -- which they didn't.

Oh well.

I noticed that sales of this DVD are pretty slow. A local Astroplus said that up until now, nobody bought a copy of Degeneration.

I noticed that the characters' eyes are so stone cold and lifeless. Their facial expressions look very limited too.

Selling Resident Evil based on its core values (the gaming franchise's saga) is pretty tough here in the Philippines, even though there are many Pinoy gamers who played RE games. It will take more than just marketing or word-of-mouth to convince the non-gaming, Pinoy moviegoer to buy RE: Degeneration.

Let me tell you about my non-gaming, Pinoy moviegoing neighbors - when asked about Resident Evil in film, they best remember it not because of its concept or action scenes, but because of Milla Jovovich.

Speaking of Resident Evil in movies, are you guys aware that the last flick, Resident Evil: Extinction, was a hit in Philippine movie theaters in 2007? It opened at #1 with P17,680,244 covering the September 26-30, 2007 period. What is more notable is that it outgrossed Star Cinema's I've Fallen For You in the same period despite having lesser movie screens and smaller marketing than it. Extinction made a grand total of almost P50 million.
