Sony Unveils First BD-Live Players
« on: Feb 27, 2008 at 08:14 AM »

Primary Blu-ray backer Sony Electronics announced today that it will release its first web-enabled Blu-ray players later this year.

Priced at around $400, Sony's BDP-S350 Blu-ray player is due this July, while its BDP-S550 player (priced at around $500) is expected to ship this fall.

Both players will be Bonus View (aka Profile 1.1) and BD-Live capable, although according to Sony's press release, the BDP-S350 will require a firmware upgrade to enable the player's BD Live functionality. (For more information about Bonus View and BD-Live, see Josh Zyber's column, "High-Def FAQ: Blu-ray Profiles Explained.)

Each of the two models are also set to include an external port for local storage, allowing users to add USB flash-based memory. The higher-priced BDP-S550 will ship with a 1GB storage device.

Both players will support 7.1 channel Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Digital Plus decoding and bit-stream output, as well as dts-HD High Resolution Audio and Master Audio bit-stream output. The BDP-S550 adds dts-HD High Resolution Audio and dts-HD Master Audio decoding as well as 7.1 channel analog audio output. No need to change that old reciever yet...

"Sony’s next-generation Blu-ray Disc models bring exciting interactive features to life and offer consumers a ground-breaking experience," said Chris Fawcett, vice president of marketing for Sony Electronics’ Home Product Division. "These new devices bring home movie experience beyond the cinema and into a whole new realm of entertainment."

Whaaa!!!??  :o at 500 dollars!!! Pwede na. I also read in one of PS blogs (from Sony) that they plan to release around June or July an 80gb PS3 bundled with PSP for 499. I guess they are trying to cash in on the remaining PS3s before they start selling these new toys!

Nice one! Price seems reachable enough. I hope the long-loading issues of previous generation were ironed out already.  ;)

Interesting to note that BD followers are not at all complaining that these new BD standalones are at least 2X the price of Toshiba's HD DVD players.

well... toshiba dropped the price but they started off the same. what really pisses me off is how sony promotes BD as the better format when HD DVD is the better format in terms of standards and features. HD DVD had the pip and connectivity standard from the start.

im getting a ps3 within the year thats for sure... for BD alone.

in anycase.. its also good that the format wars are done with. at least we have a standard format.

kawawa lang those who spent hundreds of dollars for a BD player thats not upgradable.

early adopters are usually the first to:

1. take a hit on the SRP when the next gen model comes out way cheaper than the old one but with even better specs and better reliability.
2. get a unit with bugs and with operational quirks

pero sa pinoy...iba pa rin ang nauuna hehe  ;D

this is why i was rooting for hd dvd to win. better features, set standards, cheaper price.

the pip feature in 300 HD DVD is not in the BD version. also the features in transformers cannot be ported straight to BD yet because of this.

sounds so familiar to me. when sony launched the ps3 they said that rumble is a thing of the past... now they released dual shock 3. they make it seem that features they omit are not needed then tout it as the next best thing when they decide to adopt to it.

good marketing in my opinion. bad for the consumers though.
