USB to Toslink Converter
« on: Dec 16, 2010 at 01:23 PM »
Hi all! I just got a slight used Toshiba Satellite U305 laptop and want to use it sana as an entertainment center for our plasma tv.  My plan is to get an external hdd to hold hd movies then just use the vga out of the laptop to the tv. I will then use the KMP sowftware to control the files.

My problem is, the laptop only has analog output. I want it sana to be connected to my avr to pass dts/ac3 signals. The only solution I can think of is a USB to Toslink Converter.   Has anybody here experienced using such converter and does it really work? Can we buy it locally and where?

I saw a ideal budget converter in the web, the Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Micro II . Here is the link:
http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/sound-cards/audio-advantage-micro-ii.aspx

Do we have something like this locally and where? Hope you can help me guys on this. Tnx  :)

There are many options from the usual PC audio suspects.  :)

However, the cheapest way to what you're looking for is CD-R King. They sell this product:

@ Stagea, Wow! This encore converter looks promising!  :o Any idea sir how much this cost at cd-r king? Also, not clearly stated in it's features, can it pass through dts signal? It's says there only dolby digital.

I think I will run to my nearest  cd-r king branch later too see the actual unit. Thanks very much.

~1k ata, not sure. I have not tried this unit, so I'm not sure if the drivers can handle DTS streaming (probably not).

Sir, based on it's specs, you will need a toslink or optical cable to connect to your receiver. Just ask your suking audio/video store and they will direct you to it.  :)

@Philander, sir, It's also another option for me but the price is a bit steep considering there is a media player currently selling for 2.5K.  ;)

@Stagea, I will update here if it can pass dts. Any other cheap usb dac you know locally? Tnx  :)
