abs-cbnnews.com: New restoration brings movie classics to life

LOS ANGELES - When watching the DVD re-release of "Gone With the Wind," what once appeared as simply a green cloth shawl worn by Vivien Leigh is revealed as a garment of dark emerald velvet so rich it beckons touching.

Similarly, in the 1939 film's opening scene, while Leigh's Scarlett O'Hara rambles on about the tedium of war, the white bodice of her dress now displays precise lace patterns and threads.

Likewise, when Errol Flynn rides horseback into Sherwood Forest in 1938's "The Adventures of Robin Hood," the detailed pattern embedded on his and other soldiers' armor is so vivid that the number of small metal rings can be counted.

These elements have been made clearly visible through a patented technology created by Warner Bros. in collaboration with AOL. The process involves digitally realigning and sharpening the older film negatives of these classic movies shot on Technicolor three-strip film.

Known as Ultra Resolution, the technique has been nominated this year for a Scientific and Technical Academy Award and has restored films in the studio's vast library including "Singing In the Rain," "The Searchers" and "The Wizard of Oz" -- prints that over time have suffered blurring or "color fringing" as well as shrinkage, stretching and other damage.

It was while observing a projected picture of "Wind" during some digital scanning that Chris Cookson, president, Warner Bros. Technical Operations and chief technology officer, Warner Bros. Entertainment, says he was inspired. He noticed a frame five pixels out of alignment and knew the resolution could be improved if somehow all the sharp edges could just be better matched.

No double dip for me.

My monitor is not that big to notice the difference nor would I stop to check the details of costumes or props flash in every scene.

An upgrade in HDVD or Blu-ray might do the trick.

I think this restoration technology was used in the latest releases of  "Gone With The Wind", "Wizard of Oz", etc., so if you already have those, I don't think you should fret over this news article.

Yes, that's the way I understood the press releases for those DVD reissues from Warner when they first came out, as well.

Yeah, Disc Three of the 2004 Gone With the Wind 4-Disc set release includes this special feature:

Restoring a Legend: An in-depth look at the restoration and Ultra-Resolution process utilized by Warner Bros. for this new DVD presentation

I guess the new article came about to highlight the fact that the Ultra Resolution process was just nominated this year for a Scientific and Technical Oscar Award.

I think this was also discussed in The Wizard of Oz New Release. I overreacted. Not a fresh news after all.

Pardon my ignorance. Are the classics you mentioned available on R3, rather locally?

Except for The Wizard of Oz Collector's Edition, the rest is available locally i.e. Gone with the Wind and Ben Hur.

The re-released Wizard of Oz Special Edition is available locally for Php 695. The Collector's Edition is not available here though, as mentioned by sir hemisphere.

I believe this recently released R3 Special Edition (the one with the slipcase featuring Dorothy's ruby slippers standing on the Yellow Brick Road) was remastered using the above mentioned restoration technology. I'm not sure though if the same follows for the much older R3 release which might still be available for Php 275.
