Thanks!  :)  ... I've used the bundled software before but I don't like it. There seems to be a bug in the recording feature. I'll try out that programs that you suggested.

oops, I made a mistake in one of the recording codecs, wala palang divx, mpeg4 pala :)

uICE, use your remote control to control your PC and softwares.

i'm using this with my leadtek winfast tv remote and the configuration is easy to figure out anyway. btw it's free!

Checked it out... looks like it doesnt support my Asus remote.  My remote uses a USB Infrared reciever.  The only driver I know that works with this is the philips MCE driver for girder.

Try myHTPC its also a good front end software, its also free! www.myhtpc.net

Why are you planning to get a 6.1 speaker when you have a 5.1 soundcard? If you like creative products, there are two good speakers in the market: Creative Megaworks 550 5.1 THX and the Creative Gigaworks S700 5.1 THX(best). I suppose you have the money to buy those since your setup is expensive. OR you could build your own Home Theater Audio Setup, (Main Speakers, Surround Speakers, Center Speaker, Subwoofer, and Amplifier). For me I'm fine with my Megaworks 550 since I don't have the money to build my own audio setup.

the klipsch is very high quality, but also comes with a heavy price tag.. but I think it has the best sounding computer speakers that is as close to a real audio setup as you can get.

By the way, has anyone been able to overclock an AthlonXP 2500+ on an ECS KM400M2 motherboard? I'm still mixed up in this overclocking thing... kinda confusing, the CPU frequency is 166mhz but it can be set up to 197mhz in 1mhz increments. So does that mean the FSB remains at 133? and the ram at 133? its kinda confusing does the PCI and AGP remain at 66/33 respectively? Ive checkd the manual of the motherboard and you can only change the CPU frequency.  I cant find settings for Clock multiplier and FSB. Help anyone?

If that KM400M2 is an Nforce2 board then you don't have to worry about the PCI or AGP, as they are locked at 33mhz and 66Mhz respectively (unless manually overriden on some boards, like the 8RDA+)
And with most chipsets it can be asynchronus or synchronus mem to FSB.  Meaning your FSB and MEM can be 166mhz at the same time or not, just look at your ratios.   The CPU frequency is the FSB... if you up it to 197mhz, a sycnh memory would also run at 197mhz... or close to 400DDR. If asynch, for example, go 197Mhz on the FSB, but your mem can remain at 166mhz (333DDR) if your board will allow it. (this ratio, I mean)

thanks for the suggestion guys! will check those speakers out specially the Klipsch Promedia and Creative Megaworks.

@jpadua

sometimes nforce2 boards run pci/agp at a higher setting when you overclock so you have to manually set it to 66Mhz.

If you set the CPU FSB to 197 and run the memory at 1:1 with the CPU then the memory will be at 197 too. If you can't change the clock multiplier maybe your proc is locked.

Thanks guys for your tips, actually the KM400m2 is a Via KM400 Chipset, its fairly new, but I have not seen any not a single review on the board, I just got it becuase it seems to fit my HTPC requirements at a good cost... just wondering if I could push some performance on it.

KM400M2
Micro-ATX
333MHZ
6 USB 2.0 Ports (4 + 2 headers)
On Board 6 Channel Audio
On Board Lan
Sata Support
Spdif output header
On Board S3 Unichrome Graphics (good for DVD, if you dont plan to play games on it)

Anyways about my Athlon... it says on the label, (forgot how to explain the codes and stuff) but according to some sites, my chip is a remarked 2600+ remarked to 2500+, Manufactured 2003, week 35 pre locked barton.

I guess if I put it on a board with the capability to change multipliers I'm ok. :)

Right now the KM400 will only allow CPU frequency adjustment and Dimm Voltage.  There is also an option to run memory at 166mhz and to automatically detect PCI/AGP clock. (I dont really know what that does)

this is my current overclock

AthlonXP 2500+ @ 1.9ghz (11x175)
Coolermaster Silent Boost HSF

Radeon 9600pro @ 500mhz clock, 333mhz mem
Zalman VGA Heatpipe with op. Fan

3D mark score 3934

ran 3D mark several times so far no crashes

Is that a good mark? or can I still push the machine?

Aluminum HTPC Case Finally!
« Reply #195 on: Jan 28, 2004 at 10:05 AM »
I have been pushing HTPCs since last yr trying to introduce it to the market and finally I'll be bringing in HTPC cases.  Nothing set in stone yet since I'll be testing the sample unit first.  I'll be recieving it in a week or so.

I just want to make list on who might be interested.  I'll be importing these babies, so as of now it will be by order basis.

They will be in the form of ATX and MicroATX in silver, gold and black.  USB and Firewire front panel and optional VFD display and IR Remote module will also be availble.  The IR remote has a power on button to turn on the ATX power supply.

Here is a review of one of the cases
Champagne Gold, Dual Drivebays, Full ATX with VFD
http://www.ocprices.com/?rev_id=148

Still finalizing on the pricing due to shipping and taxes.

If I get a good number of possible orders then I can make arrangements for a new batch for shipment.  I'm still making some feasibility studies so theres nothing set in stone so it might roll out in a couple of months, I just want to find out it if there are a good number of possible orders to justify importation.

Let me know... email me at [email protected] so I can update you on the cases and accessories.

Future plans:
M2 Systech Customized HTPC
High Definition upscaled DVD playback (540p, 720p, 1080i)
Personal Video Recording Capable (pause, record live TV)
Home Theater Automation (lights, curtains, projection screen control)

Hi Bravoexo,

Yeah solid ganda! I just recieved the sample unit yesterday... very hi-end talaga yung dating, di na mukhang PC.  Ang ganda ng 8mm thick front plate nya.. as thick as the marantz front plate.

Anyway hopefully we could get the price down by Volume order and through connections  (if any sa customs)

the first unit was sort of an investment in my part, it was a bit too expensive actually, cause It was sent via Fedex (so door to door = expensive) then I was taxed by customs (expensive din)  I also got the case with the Additional Vaccum Flourecent Display and IR Remote Kit so thats an additional cost.

I paid about 16.5k for everything (arm and a leg!!) which includes:

Bank Transfer Charges
Shipping Charges (Fedex door to door)
Customs Duties and Taxes
Additional Accessories (VFD Display and IR Kit = roughly worth 5k)

But once i pasok na namin yung cases then you can just purchase directly without worrying about the other stuff. You will be able to order the case naman without the options just like any other case and it will be much cheaper pa.

At the moment it is undecided how much the case will be. I'll just post the details here on the price and when we decide to have a volume shipment. Most probably by slow boat to keep costs down.

The case is actually affordable...  its the shipping and taxes that kill the price.

Here are Pics of my Latest HTPC Setup

Accent aluminum HTPC Case w VFD and Remote
Athlon XP 2500+ 333mhz barton
512MB DDR
ECS KM400M2 microATX
      Spdif digitial output
      6 channel audio
      USB 2.0
HEC 475w Dual Fan
Radeon 9600pro
ASUS TV/FM capture card
Thermaltake Silentboost HSF cooler
Zalman VGA Heatpipe with Opt. Fan

Components fit niceley with enough room to breathe.

Since the case is a bit low profile (5" tall) the original configuration of my Zalman heatpipe and fan would not fit, so I modded the opt fan placement. Replaced the thumbscrews with a plain screw and moved the opt fan to the side of the heatsink so the cover would fit.

Added a lian li aluminum drive bezel which fits perfectly on the DVD drive bay... better than looking at standard DVD rom... looks cool too.

Ready for testing!

Exposed drive tray, opening from the aluminum drive bezel

All covered up.  You can see the Accent HTPC remote on top, got it working great using winLirc and Girder.

Vacuum Flourecent Display makes the case look really good.

All setup!

looks really great! Medyo compact sa loob, you could arrange the wirings para ok yung airflow sa loob at hindi maginit agad. You could tape the wires para hindi sila kalat. I like the Flourecent Display too, cool!

Kulang nalang HDTV. hehe!  ;D

Actually HDTV na yan :) its a philips Pixelplus 4:3, I'm connected to the TV via VGA, and watching upscaled DVD to 1080i :)

Regarding the wiring, actually plano ko nga yun! Ive already got cable wraps, hehehe, Before putting the power supply ok sya, yung power supply masyado maraming cables hard to manage! yung iba nga tinape at tinago ko nalang sailalim ng DVD drive.  Pero regarding cooling and airflow, ok sya... with the case all closed up, I can feel the air coming in through the front vents sa ilalim ng case near the front, looks like the the air is flowing nicely... I used to have another case, DIY na HTPC case. Normal sa temps ko ang 45deg idle 50 to 52deg load.  Now and idle ko is mga 38-39 and loaded temp ko is about 40-45! the case itself absorbs the heat I think, since more than 50% of the case is aluminum and covers a wide area mainly around the whole case. The case is nicely covered so the noise inside the case is very much dampened.  I'm using a silent boost HSF, Zalman heatpipe with fan runing at 5v, 2 60mm fans runing at 5v,  lahat silent operation... yung main source ng ingay ko is the 475w HEC.. its loud.. buti nalang the case dampens the sound.. you can hadly hear the PC running from about 2-3meters.. which is pretty good.  Dating case ko sounded like a vacuum cleaner hehehe, silent mode na yun...

HTPC = Home Theater Personal Computer

to the expert (jpadua), tama diba?   ;D ;D

Yup that is correct! Here's a more in depth explanation.

(Home Theater Personal Computer)

What is an HTPC, to make the explanation simpler, and HTPC is basically a PC (personal computer) which has been custom built to play DVD at their highest quality. It can also work as a personal video recorder, and a media server. There are a lot of applications since the Personal Computer is highly customizable.

How do we market this idea? well most if not all new TVs coming out of the woodwork is already High Definition capable, these are TV's ranging from CRT, Plasama, Rear Projection, front Projecton and usually 16:9 widescreen Aspect Ratio. If you were in the market to invest in a new TV, the obvious choice is to buy a TV equipped with High Definition Capability. This is where technology will be going in terms of Home Entertainment. TV's without HD (high definition) will be out of date really soon. One thing that most consumers don't realize is that, HD TV's are made for High Definition Broadcasts. Buying an HDTV will get you the best picture quality. This is both True and False. True, the TV will give you the best quality you can feed through it, and False, we will not have High Definition Broadcast is limited more often than not unavailable in other countries.

Let me explain High Definition. HD is a new video standard, and is catching on in the US very quickly. In the US High Definition broadcast is present but not abundant, the reason for which is that TV networks need to upgrade all their systems to be able to broadcast in High Definition, I believe it has already been mandated in the US that all broadcasts should be able to be in High Defenition within the next 5 yrs. Ok what is high definition in the first place you may ask? There is a huge difference between Normal Definition and High Defenition, currently standard definition is 740x480 Interlaced. This is what we call the video resolution, 740 vertical lines and 480 horizontal lines, whith half the lines being show a split second at a time to show the complete picture. High Definition uses 16x9 Aspect Ration (widescreen) 1920x1080 interlaced, which is more than double the picture resolution. Sharper image, and more detail. Its almost like looking through a window. Almost like comparing wearing glasses and removing them. Its like night and day.

Where does the HTPC come into play? Well, an HTPC is what I call an alternative to a High Definition Video Scaler. A Video Scalers, is a line doubler, and upsamples regular video into High Defenition. This is what broadcast networks use to upscale their video to high definition broadcast. These video scalers would cost about $3,000 or higher. An HTPC would do the same plus more. Since there are no High Definition Broadcasts available in the philippines, not for a long time, the best quality content we can be able to attain is DVD. Unfortunately DVD is only 740x480 standard resolution and not High Definition. By using an HTPC with currently available DVDs we will be able finally create High Definition content! at the fraction of the cost of a video scaler, and is for home use, and since this is also a PC, be able to connect to the internet, surf the web, download email, play computer games, work on Documents and Spreadsheets, all from your Widescreen TV in the comfort of your own living room. In addition, its also Upgradable, so you're HTPC will never become obsolete, not in a very long time.

:)

Its hard to point out exactly how much an HTPC would cost, becuase it would depend on the kind of parts you have inside.  Just think of it as buying a brand new PC, with extra emphasis on the video card and case.  The case is hard to comeby.. all of the cases you find here are all computer cases. You can probably find a nice looking desktop case but its usually only for small form factor... others might go for the shuttle type PC.

Bottom line is, that the price should be compared to a new PC plus a little extra (Case, remote control, display unit).  A lot of people kasi fail to realize that its a PC not a DVD player (most kasi compare the price to a DVD player).

heto na lang suggestions ko to make it easy for you to plan on building an HTPC.

you need a PC:
1) 1GHz & up CPU
2) 512MB at least of RAM
3) 40GB at least of hard drive
4) a soundcard that is 5.1 capable w/ or w/o digital-out (i.e. creative audigy series cards)
5) a DVD-ROM standard is 16x speed
6) lastly, a videocard with DVI & tv-out connections (i.e. ati radeon 9600pro/xt)

next, you need the multimedia peripherals:
1) a TV and FM tuner card (some cards have both TV & FM)

next, the softwares:
1) WinDVD or PowerDVD or whatever apps u like to watch DVD with. these softwares can also play mp3, mpeg, avi (codecs required)..., almost all video and sound files no need for winamp but if you love winamp like i do then follow your heart =P

2) software of your TV and FM tuner
3) software to enable ur remote(TV & FM tuner) to act like a universal remote. ask them about it but i use uICE for the Leadtek Winfast 2000XP TV & FM tuner card.

now the most important parts of an HTPC:
1) monitor/tv/projector/lcd...
what kind of visual display do you really like? pc monitors have the finest pixels around meaning high resolution. tv's there's this pixel plus tv that is good both monitor and tv. projector or LCD projector, size can be varied but costly to maintain. LCD, durable and good enough for visual display. all in all, it depends on how much you can spend for your visual display; arranged from cheapest to expensive: monitor, TV, LCD, LCD projector, TV projector, plasma screen.

2)the sound setup.
PC related sound setups are good enough and they are the cheapest. ranging from 4,000 to 25,000. the more expensive the louder and the better sound. there are also Home Theater Sound setups, these things cost much more than PC sound setups. but they pack more punch and sound much better than the high-end pc speaker.

i hope these things helps you with your planning. btw an average setup should cost you around 30,000-50,000 it really depends on what you buy.

Well said Schlamm!!!

If you're more on the budget side of things, I suggest using a microATX mobo.. its cheaper ranging from 2500 to 3000 and is already usb2, may built in 6ch sound (yung iba may digital out na) built in Lan...

it saves you...

USB2.0 Card
Sound Card
Lan Card

the lack of PCI slots are not so bad since most of the things you need a built into the board na.  all you need to add is the Video card and TV card. Some boards also have built in Video as well!

hmm...
I saw a nice miniATX desktop in festival mall around 3k lang.  Not sure lang kung kaya ng 250w ang athlons ang p4 kaya nya ata.

you can get svec or benq na infrared keyboad w/ built in mouse.. its mga 2500 lang

so heres a rough estimate

board (miniATX built in 5.1 / spdif) = 3200
AMD cpu = 2500
ram = 3800
video card (ati 9200se) = 4000
TV card = 2500
DVD/CD-RW combo = 3500
40gb Seagate HD = 3500
Logitech z-640 5.1 speakers = 4500
IR keyboard and mouse = 2500

mga 30,000 na toh.. heheh budget na yan

choice mo nalang what kind of case you want to use, and display device (CRT monitor, LCD monitor, HDTV, RPTV, Projector, Plasma)

If you already have a PC at home... convert it to an HTPC!!!

things you might have to upgrade

CPU at least 1ghz, 2gh and up much better
ram at least 512ddr
5.1 soundcard
video card
TV card.
