Have you tried to compare the special features of the Lord of the Rings 2-Disk with the Extended Edition?

I noticed in the 2-disc version that included in it is an MTV of Enya whereas, it is not available in the Extended Version.
 :P
i know that it might sound to trivial, but I couldn't help but be interested since I love Enya's music.

hi there! i think there's a thread here which discusses the differences between the two editions. anyway, the fact is both editions actually contain different special features and none of the features found in the 2-disc version can be found in the extended one...

that's why if you're a die hard LOTR fan, it's a must to buy both versions  ;D

I posted a question before regarding the difference between US and Canadian version of the gift set, but nobody replied.  :-\

Just got the gift set I ordered from Amazon.ca today and for those who are interested, here's what I think are the differences (can't confirm since I don't have a US version to compare it with)... 1) French Dolby 2.0 instead of an English Dolby 2.0 audio track. 2) some French text on the packaging, actually not the cardboard packaging nor the DVD case itself but the French text is present in both the "information" paper glued on the cardboard box and the inlay (chapter titles) for the DVD itself; and 3) it has no free adult movie pass... uhmm... let me state that in a better way... no adult Two Towers movie pass.  ::)

LOTR:TTT Extended DVDs
« Reply #336 on: Dec 11, 2002 at 10:13 AM »
I know it's still way ahead for all of us....since most of us haven't even seen the second installment of LOTR:TTT, but what do you think are the odds that they'll be releasing LOTR:TTT Extended Platinum Gift Set edition on top of the usual theatrical release like what they did with FOTR?

What figurine or freebie would you guys like to go along with this set? How about a Helm's Deep, Isengard, Baradur or Edoras reproduction? DVD stands or book racks? whatever?

Isn't it wonderful just trying to imagine what would accompany the set. I would definitely be getting one! I wouldn't mind looking into a Palantir to see what New Line Cinema is cooking up for our DVD futures!

It's something that will probably go along with the ceramic bookends. My wife is hoping it's an LOTR book.

i finally found the time to watch my copy of the FOTR extended edition during the holidays. i noticed something wrong when i played the cast commentary on disk 2. on disk 1, accompanying the commentary are subtitles that tell you who is speaking while on disk 2, when i continued the commentary the subtitles were wrong. meaning instead for example of reading Elijah Wood on top it would have the name of the assistant director or some technical guy who worked on the effects although the speech is still that of the cast. anyone else experience this? ??? >:(

Just tried it out, and I still get the proper cast names for the commentary on Disc 2, hajime.

Maybe it's a player incompatibility with the disc? I tested a US R1 version on a Konzert.

That's a bummer alright...anyway, I just watched the LOTR TT last week (using my free TT movie pass of course) and I must say the movie keeps getting better and better.  The creepy-looking Golum stole the spotlight from Frodo alright :-).  I'm not going to get into too much detail 'coz this will spoil the fun :-) but I just can't wait for the 4 Disc? DVD to come out next year.

Kudos to Peter Jackson and his crew...

Checked out my copy... Canadian Version not the US so I don't know if it's the same.

When I tried to continue the commentary, it does the same thing. It picks up the "subtitle" from the previous commentary team listed (i.e. when picking the commentary of the Design team, you get subtitles of the director/writer, when picking the post-production team, you get the "subtitles" from the Design team).

But I tried accessing the commentaries again from the main menu and it yielded the correct "subtitles". Director/writer on the director/writer commentary.  ??? Don't know but I think there's a glitch in the Canadian version of the DVD. Is it the same with the US version?

Hi earendil,

Since the giftset is heavy more or less 2 lbs. weight, you might want to check out first the dvd marketplace for local sellers. The cost difference is not that much, it might be even cheaper if you buy it from a pinoydvd member.

If you buy online at Amazon and want it to ship it here directly using standard shipping the cost will be arround P300 pesos but chances are you will be charge by the local post office of customs tax of P1,000 or more ;D

Kung expedited international shipping it will cost you an arm and leg plus customs tax din  ;D. Another alternative is to try using Johny Air cargo to ship your order from any US based online merchants to Manila.

Pero kung nagtitipid ka talaga, I suggest you try inquiring from this PDVD members: charbit, PARC, Emildjr or any reliable sellers sa marketplace. Atleast you will free yourself from the hasle of paying customs tax, lost shipment and other problems ;D You never know they might give some discounts or delivered it free from your doorsteps ;D

Hope this helps 8)

I ordered from Amazon.ca and had it delivered expedited to my Laguna home. The total shipping weight was 5.150Lbs.  And they used DHL. It was also my first order from them.  The price then was 79.99CAD
Expedited Shipping was 24.98CAD

Unforunately my Customs Duties/Taxes came to 1,427 Pesos!

Total was more than 5,000.

Lesson learned: grab local R1 offerings and hang on to a great deal once you smell one!  Charbit honored the 3,400 peso deal he made with those who signed up for it prior to the release.

Sayang, although I think you really shouldn't have shipped it using expidited method. I used standard method for shipping and my order arrived in a week!

Pinakiusapan ko yung customs nun ita-tax nila ako (for about P1,200+) since the listed value in their papers of the item I bought was not more than US$50 (CDN$77.99 equivalent to about $49.60 then...) so pinalusot nya yung package without tax.

Ang problema lang nga duon sa standard shipping is my LOTR box had two of big corner nicks since Amazon.ca didn't pack it that sturdy, but DVDs and the Argonath were in excellent shape.

You should have sent a picture from amazon first and you should have indicated that it is different from the widescreen theatrical release.  :-\

Ok lang yan, Frank.  If you're a LOTR fan, I would recommend that you buy both the Widescreen (theatrical) edition and the Extended edition.  Each has its own unique features.  Ako, nga, eh, I plan to buy both the Theatrical edition as well as the Extended Edition of Two Towers and ROTK, when they are already available.

Earendil,

Sayang at tapos na ang Christmas season.  Anyways, what I do to cut on expenses was to order in Amazon.com and have it delivered to a relative living in the USA (my tita will be going here within this week).  Since free delivery ang Amazon.com, bawas sa expense at isasama na ng tita ko sa balikbayan box niya.  Makukuha ko na ang inorder kong DVDs (2 transactions) which I ordered last October and December (pahabol!!)  Yes, matagal siya, pero handa naman ako maghintay ng ilan buwan.  Pero if you like it here and now, I strongly suggest you buy sa mga members ng PinoyDVD.  They are most reliable and most willing to help (since they are also collectors like you and me).

By the way, I bought my 4-disc LOTR from Charbit (hows that for plugging, huh!! ;D

I guess I'm lucky...

(1) My collector's box set arrived intact since Amazon.ca sent it in a big sturdy box with lots of bubble wrap (ordered it together with Attack of the Clones)

(2) Spent only P2,719.32 (Attack of the Clones cost P917.54), both acc to my credit card bill

(3) Shipping was free to Manila (used a coupon to reduce the price, discount was bigger than shipping cost!)

(4) Got charged P20 (package handling fee) at the Post Office. Customs guy opened the box, smiled and wished me a merry christmas.

(5) Used standard shipping and it only took ten days to get here.

This is my eighth order from amazon.ca and I'm still a very, very happy customer. No missing orders yet. Never been charged for taxes. (Maybe it's my dashing good looks...but the then again the customs inspector's a guy...)

hi guys. am seriously thinking of buying the 4-disc dvd (already have the 2 disc). was wondering if it's an ok purchase compared naman to the steep price of the gift set. also to those who have the 4-disc, they add the 30 minutes extra footage right? complete with music and such? thanks guys!!

Yup. the 30 minutes of extended scenes are blended in fluidly throughout the film. I believe that the 4-disc edition is a must have for any LOTR fan... Best Director's commentary I've listened to so far... plus the extra features on the two discs were excellent, they didn't bore me at any point . If you're not into figurines then I think the 4-disc set is very sufficient enough, the National Geographic disc will not be worth the extra thousands that you will spend, IMO... (but I'm a sucker for action figures so it's the Argonath bookends gift set if you ask me.  ::) )

IMO, it is worth every peso!  not very often that i enjoy the extra features and very seldom that i watch the extra features without using the fast forward button.  but this one  :o :o :o !!

the 30 minutes of extra footage was also good.  especially the part when Galadriel gave gifts to the Hobbits which is used in TTT

Buy the 4-disc set, it's well worth it. And the added 30+ minutes of scenes adds more depth to the characters (but still no Tom Bombadil) and the scenes at Lothlorien sets up events in Two Towers nicely, and it made Celeborn (Galadriel's consort) more useful to the Fellowship, and Haldir lives up to his role in the books as he guided them to Lorien.

The additional 2 disc appendices are the best! More in-depth behind the scenes footage at WETA Workshop, etc.

If you can live without the Argonath polystone bookends, and the National Geographic DVD, the 4-disc set will do well.
