i had the opportunity to bring home the 6550-based amp (with pentode, ultralinear, & triode operation modes) last night to audition with my gears. actually, my primary objective is to find out if the amp can drive my 88db Dahlquist DQ-10 speakers with decency. me masamang balak, eh... heheheh.

first album, starbucks' west coast jazz album, played with the amp in ultralinear mode. ayos naman. volume pot at 1 pm at wala pa ring distortion. first track, i already find my feet tapping involuntary. hmmm...

next album, Carmen McRae's Sarah - Dedicated to you. the amp this time is in triode mode with the volume pot at 10 am (11 in the evening na, eh.). the song Misty is knee-weakening, Send in the Clown saddening, Black Coffee promising something exciting... nakatulog tuloy ako. aaarrggghhh! :'(

5 am. with the amp still at triode mode & the volume pot at 9 am. i played several tracks from the album Brazilian Sketches. yesss... Stacey Kent voice, luscious. the sax lines, sensous. of course, that "suklay" sound in the track So Nice... unfortunately, have to get ready to go to work. baka ma-late ako at mawalan ng source ng panggastos sa bisyong 'to.

conclusion, the amp can drive the Dahlquist DQ-10 decently at moderate volume levels.

nga pala, i used the following in the audition:
1) old Kenwood LD player (can't even remember the model.

)
2) Dahlquist DQ-10 speakers (luma din. $:-\$ )
3) Audio Pro 12 wga speaker wires
4) DIY interconnects (Audio Pro cable terminated by Quantum RCA plugs)

'yun lang po. balik trabaho na. sama na tingin ng boss ko.

hmmn interesting, cant wait to test those dq10's with my amp

how was the bass lines on so nice when played through his amp ? the 6550 amp according to andrew gives 12w in UL 10w in pentode and 8w in triode.

auditioned ko rin finally itong amx 300b at 2A3(hehe ngayon lang umaga actually).

2A3 is driving the big speaker Torral (tama ba spelling)
tapos iyong 300b.

Pero sandali lang ako wala kasi Si Mr. Andrew Sevilla, gusto kong makausap habang nakikinig at magkaroon ng options and recommendations.

mamya daw lunch andoon so balik na lang ako.

Pwedeng palitan ang chassis rayt?

The kt88 amp i liked there was retubed with svetlana el34's dunno why though. the chassis was modified and handles were added for easier carrying. Was not able to audition it though.

kadadaan ko lang din a while ago :)saw mr andrew pero umalis agad...saw the 2a3 and 300b ingrated amps...kt88 and el34 integrated amps both 25wpc

..selling 25t each..hhmmm the el34s looks good

sounds better kaya?...what intrigue me is the speakers driven by the 300b...di ba yung ung gold series ni nirvblkr?

just got back from phasetron myself. binalik ko 'yung 6550 amp. i also brought my amp for some modifications. 'yun nga lang, wala nga si mr. sevilla.

re the floorstanders, 'yun na 'yung speakers ni nirv at anthony. fyi lang.

wala naman atang internal mods na ginawa. pinalitan lang ng tubes. saka 'yung handles...

is the 6550/kt88 amp similar to the old SE amp with the wood chassis? i didn't get a picture of that one.

btw, i had my David 1 amp tweaked as follows:
1. changed ultralinear mode to pentode mode.
2. setup 6550 as fixed bias (with cathode follower)

the tweak resulted to a higher power (12 wpc, clipping at 15 wpc) on pentode mode.

medyo bumaba lang ang gain. the usual sound level at 10-11 o'clock now requires the pot to be at 1-2 o'clock. unfortunately, a pre-amp stage cannot be added anymore as there's no more space. $:-\$

the best result, though, is that it has retained it sweet sound ala triode with lots of PRAT. sarap pakinggan... it can also drive my DQ10s with relative ease.

anyways, di ako nakabalik noong lunch naipit ako at natagalan sa Qatar Airways office kya di ko rin nakausap si Andrew Sevilla.

Iyon nga iyon speaker ni nirvblkr kya pamilyar sa akin, iyong attendant na nakausap ko noong umaga di sya masyadong pamilyar sa mga equipment doon eh (aminado naman sya). kya i left without good information sana maka-attend ng mga sessions ng mga tube gurus ng Pinoy DVD sa mga future sessions nila.
