How has your DVD selection criteria evolved?
« on: Nov 06, 2001 at 02:38 AM »
Have you noticed na parang nag-e-evolve and selection criteria as we add on to our collection and learn more about DVD, including reading all the threads here at the site?

Probably starting off with our favorite titles as in we have a title in mind at kung may DVD nang available eh bibilhin mo na kahit na plain movie lang siya.  Then yuong may mga special features na, then mga Ultimate, Five Star, or Criterion, then DTS or DD EX na, tapos yuong collectibles na.

I myself started with the criteria na yuong gusto kong ulit-ulitin... period.  So I got yuong mga aliw na comedies.

Then dapat super ganda ang video and sound quality.

Now, I only select and collect those that I really want.
Like Star Wars for example or Kevin Smith films, other titles whenever I will get extra income na lang.  Life is harder now.

The nice thing with narrowing our selection criteria is kumokonti ang gusto natin bilhin na DVDs kaya lang minsan naman eh sabay-sabay ang labas ng titles that match our criteria kaya malaking aray sa bulsa.

Not only we are becoming choosy but also where we buy. Before sa mga offline store lang then sa mga importers na. Nag start ako sa mga concerts then sa mga very good quality ang video and audio like T2, Super speedway, bug's life etc then hinahanap ko na features then mga cartoons na always hard to find then bumalik ako sa R3 ubos na pera.

Well for me, it started with just selecting all my fav movies having no real criteria except should be in R1. Then preferred movies with DTS soundtracks. After learning about ana-wide, decided to build my collection with that in mind also.

Very confusing and demanding this vice is! Not to mention how much you have to spend on them!  ::)

Before, I intended to collect just a few reference quality DVD to showcase my simple HT system and rent out the rest.  but then last year I got this 2nd hand analog widescreen tv which made want to watch old and new movies in their Anamorphic widescreen glory. lalong dumami ang list na gusto ko. kahit yung mga baduy na japanese na godzilla movies na Anamorphic parang gusto kong mapanood sa tv ko (favorite ko yung king kong vs godzilla).

let me count the ways

- old line, mahirap lang ako kaya di pwede gastos ng gastos. (come to think of it, kahit naman pala dati. heheeh)
- started looking at the bargain bins.
- some dvds though expensive are worth it.
- started ordering on-line.

yuk yuk yuk.

In my case, I started with anime dvds (my first ever DVD was Gundam Wing Endless Waltz Special Edition, then followed by Akira Limited Edition SE). Then, I started checking the special features of the DVD (commentaries, is it anamorphic widescreen, deleted scenes, extra footage etc). Now I'm hooked with Special Edition/Collectors Edition DVDs. heheheheh!! Its just so cool to have those extra features so that you could enjoy that DVD even after you've watched it.

I started with blockbuster love-by-all movies with a lot of special effects para sulit ulit ulitin...then came yung mga movies na may part 1,2,3, etc...gusto kong kompletuhin...tapos meron pang DTS sampler and other DTS movies pampabingi lang ba....tapos yung mga dual discs (talagang patok sa akin yun)...but...never have i bought discs yet na comedy or drama kasi sayang lang ang pagka-DVD nya (just my 2 cents).  One time I had extra money tapos sabi ko sa GF ko to pick any DVD that she wanted and I'll pay for it. Hehe! ;D

When I first started collecting DVDs, I just thought of buying my favorite movies...mostly those I previously had in VHS.  Then it was the added features that attracted me...the Special Editions, etc.

I didn't care before whether the titles were anamorphic or simply letterboxed.  When I finally upgraded my display (LT150) though, the letterboxed movies didn't look quite as good na.  So now I just buy anamorphic releases (unless the only edition is full frame), preferably the really good transfers.

At the moment, it still doesn't matter to me whether it's DD or DTS. I'm sure though this will change once I finally get to set-up my speakers (or upgrade my receiver) then I'm sure I'll have a specific preference even for the audio format.

WeddingSingr is right.  The more we get choosy and selective with our criteria, the less we spend indiscriminately on our collection. ;)

Before I just buy DVDs that hit my fancy!
But being associated with weddingsingr (plug) I became choosy with my DVDs.

My Criteria are:

*It has to be at least S.E.,C.E.,or U.E. (not unless I really love the movie)
*It has to be DTS
*Packed with a lot of special features

Stage One: Manic Buying

An exciting new hobby. Basta gusto ko ang sine, bili. Kahit hindi masyadong gusto, bili pa rin.

Stage Two: Selective Buying

Became more involved in the hobby. Dapat rin at least 5.1 or better still DTS.

Stage Three: Selling More Than I Buy

Gaining lots of information about the hobby. Continuously scanning new release calendar.

Stage Four: Fear of Watching DVDs

A hobby becomes a neurosis, and then some. Oh no -- ano daw iyon, DVD rot? Oh no pa rin -- iyon pa lang binenta kong isa, oop!

I started out collecting anime dvds since i enjoy watching them pero ngayon binebenta ko na halos lahat except for a few na gusto ko talalga.
I'm shifting more to movies. It does'nt matter if meron siya o walang dts o kaya featues because what i buy is the film, kung di ko gusto yung film, i will not buy.

We started with collecting blockbuster movies.  And then eventually we narrowed it down to "movies of our favorite actors". And we have stucked with that criteria for awhile.  And then we had a new criteria:  Films about war --- Platoon, etc...then Films about Sports --- Any Given Sunday, etc.  We still have a pretty small collection though.

Anyways, lately we have a new system and I think it was inspired by the Movie Tag game at the Film & TV talk Forum.  These days, we base our collection via our : DVD Collection Movie Tag. Okay, so right now, we have a number of Tom Hanks DVDs, but we're looking for Philadelphia with Tom and Denzel W, since we also have Remember the Titans(Denzel W)---- so tag na yun.  We also have America's Sweethearts with Julia Roberts ngayon, but we need to tag, Denzel and Julia together which is = The Pelican Brief, and we don't have that yet. And so on.....

Ganoon....labo no?  Pero it's fun to do it.  I play tag with our DVD collections, saya! ;D

1) if i love the movie definitely get it without a doubt.
                                  selected items only!

so in other words, genre does not come to matter here but "MY" preferrence of the movie plays a great role! 8)
