The best archive is ABS-CBN, 24 hours aircon.

But the best collection is in CCP.  ONly aircon in daytime, not good enough.

VHS recordings aren't as clear.  Neither is DVD. The best is a film print, also the most lasting.

They are proposing an archive.  Some say Mt. Makiling; others say Tagaytay.  No real money, nothing concrete put up yet.

It's not sad.  It's infuriating.  I've been trying to get Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos restored for years.

Are these open for public viewing, especially the ones at CCP?  If so, how can they be viewed?

The CCP collection is occasionally shown in Pelikula at Lipunan, which is held by Mowelfund every February.

Or you can see them and more on Cinema One.  That's the one thing Skycable and Home have over the rest.

1. Bagets
2. Bagets 2
3. Hotshots
You could just imagine these movies with extras such as behind the scenes and interviews (past or current). Viva can dig up their old files for interviews that might have occurred during the 80's or locate these stars today and interview them regarding the movie.

4. A Dangerous Life
Kakatawa nga e sa laserdisc at sa VHS lang nilabas ito at hindi pa ibinenta dito sa Pinas. The Philippines played a major role in this film tapos walang ibinenta dito. It's high time na magkaroon na ng DVD nun dito (siyempre mas maganda kung me extras). It's a CLASSIC !!!  8)

It seems some of our voices in the forum has been heard,
just saw this article on www.inq7.net by Nestor Torre

Filling the need for tapes of outstanding Filipino films

THESE past weeks, we’ve been getting more than the usual number of queries from film buffs both here and abroad about where they can buy videotape copies of outstanding Filipino movies by the likes of Brocka, Bernal, De Leon, Romero, etc.

Our standard reply is that we head for the video shops at Virra Mall for our own “quality” “films on tape” needs, but some people say that they haven’t found much there. Any other sources?

Last week, we were with a number of film people and we asked for tips in this regard. Alas, all that most of them could come up with was our own Virra Mall advisory.

Maybe the trick is to give the Virra Mall shops a longer and more detailed look. When we’re looking for tapes of good movies, we go through hundreds of them to find maybe four or five really good ones.

What about, yes, dear reader? Do you have of a source of good Filipino films on tape that most people don’t know about? Tell us, and we’ll pass the information on to the growing number of people who’ve been asking us.

By the way, the growing interest in good Filipino movies should get a film-savvy entrepreneur to think about going into this new kind of service. There appears to be quite a demand out there for tapes of Filipino film classics, so somebody could turn a tidy profit servicing that need.

Royalties will have to be paid to producers, of course, but there should be enough left over from entrepreneurs’ while. Any takers?

“Why,” asked a member of the audience at a recent film forum,” do bad movies make money?” Good question!

First, quite a number of people go to the movies to relax, to escape. They don’t want to think, to be bothered, to face up to reality. They just want two hours of fun, and this is what some bad movies give them.

Second, some bad movies are very well promoted. Their publicity is so good an pervasive that people feel practically compelled to view them, just to see what all the fuss is about – and to be among the first to talk about the movies at home, in school or at the office. That’s a status symbol in these parts, as you know.

Third, the bad movie topbills the viewer’s favorite star. Some local moviegoers are very loyal to their idols, and are prepared to patronize star’s movies more than once, just to boost its showing at the box office. How loyal can you get?!

Fourth, the bad film is a sequel, and some people watch sequel’s because they have “brand name appeal,” and you know how we go for name brands. If the sequel turns out to be lousy, well, worse things have happened, it’s only a movie, life goes on, no sweat, etc.

Fifth, some viewers dote on specific film types and are prepared to see just about any movie that conforms to their preferred genre. Thus, action film buffs will sit through the nth rehash of a tired, old revenge or “global domination” plot, as long as it has the regulation number of fight or chase scenes, plus special effects galore.

Sixth, a number of viewers may not even know – or care – that the movie they’re watching is bad. This is the dream combination of low expectations and even lower production values that keep quickie move producers happy, even as they sneer at viewers’ terrible taste.

Unluckily for them, however, some moviegoers have become less abysmally slap-happy to please. Plus, movie ticket prices have gone up so much comes to the movies they choose to see.

Bad movies will continue to be made, but these will be fewer people who will patronize them, so fewer lousy flicks will be churned out. That’s one happy prospect to look forward to, at least!

Actually, I was one of those who sent an e-mail to the guy. I asked a friend in Manila to look for those classic films and he can't come up with anything. He's got a friend at ABS-CBN, but they won't let him copy any.  Then I stumbled upon Nestor's column, and he was discussing some classic films from the 70's ... so I thought I'd ask him and I can give my friend specific direction where to look.

I may sound as KJ, but in my opinion, THERE'S VERY LITTLE HOPE OF GETTING FILIPINO CLASSIC FILMS on home video.

All the video formats have passed, betamax, vhs, laserdisc, VCD and now DVD. Any restoration on video format? NONE.

I believe there are still films that are being kept by people who are waiting for the right time (read: profit)
to make them public. Who knows? They might even be the producers, directors or their families and friends who have these films.

for movies, aside from the ones mentioned:

Kamakalawa - Tetchi Agbayani
Darna Kunô - Dolphy
(circa 90s)
Eskapo - good cinematography, refreshing audio, good production/costume design
Pare Ko - juvenile Bagets-type but viewers can relate
Ligaya* (Director's Cut ;D)- Rosanna Roses (I even liked the way she sings the title-theme :) )
Selya* (again, Director's Cut ;D ) -Rosanna Roses

*some other Carlitos Segion-Reyna films are good too

There is a certain Pinoy film that I would personally like to be immortalized in DVD. I can't remember the title so I'm hoping someone might be able to help me with this one. It's a pretty old movie, and it has a superhero in it. Hindi ko tanda kung si Darna or Supergirl.  The one scene that I can't forget is this town being terrorized by a gigantic frog. One of the terrified citizens fleeing the monster is a very young (but already fat) Ike Lozada. He's barefoot, holding his slippers in his hands because he doesn't want to ruin them because they're new. He gets stepped on by the frog.

Anyone remember this film?

This movie is supergirl, it stars pinky de leon.

Welcome to PinoyDVD, wcvmorasa!

wcvmorasa & Komikero,

I too remeber this movie.  Actually, a trivia about this local 'Supergirl' movie came up in another internet group I'm in.  I also thought it was Pinky de Leon who played the part until our 'trivia master' corrected me with this reply read on :D):

Just thought I'd share this info for whatever its worth ;)

bartmaniac,

thanks for the correction and sorry for the mistake. I forgot about who the other pinky in the moviedom at that time, (says a lot about my age huh? hehehe)

anyway, I just hope that some of the movie execs are logging in here, so that they know that there is a market for old movies in particular. its saddening to know that  some of my wish lists for tagalog dvds are just dreams as most of them are already gone or worse rotting away at this very moment.

Anyhoo, I know there are a  lot of other problems in our country right now, and preserving movies may not be one of the priorities. But maybe some years from now our children are going to look back and say the same thing about the better movies that have been made during our time.

Gerry de Leon's Noli has still has a print available.  Will it ever be transferred to DVD?  Don't know.

Same with his El Filibusterismo.  It's on video, and shown on Viva Channel occasionally.

Both are great films.

How I really wish I could watch the ff. filipino films in DVD format:

1.) Fernando Poe Jr. classic films such as Agila,
Isang Bala Ka Lang, Kapag Puno Na Ang Salop...
2.) Dolphy classic films such as Ibong Adarna,
Lucio and Miguel, Jack and Jill, Kalabog and Bosyo...
3.) LVN and Sampaguita pictures classic films...

Lets give the new generation a chance to see what filipino classic films is all about... :-*

"Alupihang Dagat".This one's an FPJ movie with Elizabeth Oropesa noong uso pa ang wet white t-shirts scenes sa movies which by the way pinauso ni Gloria Diaz sa "Ang Pinakamagandang Hayop sa Balat ng Lupa".

Here's a good idea for a box set. Launching movies of the 7 bold stars na pinasikat ni Jesse Ejercito of Seven Stars Productions. It started with Elizabeth Oropesa sa Mister Mo, Lover Boy Ko, Chanda Romero, Daria Ramirez, Alma Moreno sa Ligaw na Bulaklak, Beth Bautista, at Lorna Tolentino sa Dulce Amor, Ina. I can't remember the seventh star. Was it Rio Locsin in Menor de Edad? Would someone help me complete this list?

Another box set I want to see is Maryo de los Reyes fun movies like "High School Circa '65", "Apat na Maria", and maybe "Gabun" with Michael Sandico and Lloyd Samartino.

Oops! I think I just miss my younger days in the Philippines that's why I'm kind of reminiscing about the old movies. Seriously, these are good movies that's why somehow it stays in your memories. Even the bold movies, some are directed by Ishmael Bernal. Check it out if you can find it.

I think Rio Locsin's launching movie was "Disgrasyada" but I'm not sure if it was with Seven Stars.

i've a friend who's a big fan, who i'm convincing to buy a DVD player (para may maka-relate naman sa akin hahahah).  she says if there is a DVD for dear heart, she will join the pinoydvd bandwagon as she has looked long and hard for any copy of this movie.

I would get Dear Heart if it comes out. I like Gabby Concepcion a lot. I think he was overlooked before ... but I do think he's a lot better than Richard Gomez or Aga Muhlach.
