It's been so long, in fact years na since I read the article, and the information was insignificant then, kaya hindi ko na tinandaan. Don't worry if I come across it again, I'll definitely tell you.  :)

kapag natapos ang upgrade ng NLEX, tiba-tiba na naman ang kapamilya

kahit na mas mayaman ang ABS-CBN, bilib din ako sa GMA for keeping up with the competition

People can't really distinguish one company from the other. As far as they are concerned, its Lopez! Even if NLEX brings in lots of money, it does not affect ABS directly as they are different companies with different shareholders though they may have common officers. Each company succeeds or fails on its own merit. It just very unfortunate that problems of individual companies crop up simultaneously i.e. Meralco with its refund, Maynilad because of poor due diligence, Bayantel because of diminishing profits, Sky with its cashflow and collection problems, the mother company has its hands full. Majority of their problems is that they have borrowed heavily using foreign funds such that the sudden devalation last 1997 caught all of them flatfooted!  ABS on the other hand, inspite of being the dominant tv network, has to tighten its belt in view of diminished earning potential due to the effects of the sept 11 bombings.

So, my take on this is NLEX and ABS are two different companies. Period.

Amen.

The shows during BBC Weekend are one of my few reasons for turning on the tube during the weekends. The BBC entertainment shows I do get to see are almost always great. BBC News gave the most honest reporting during the Iraq War, and the presenters do not have the sanitized quality of your CNN Internationl presenter (except perhaps Richard Quest). And they once did have a very funny film critic in the person of Barry Norman.

When we speak about production value, content and visual appeal i still think ABS-CBN remains the expert on these. Although i can admit that there are some GMA  sitcoms that are a notch funnier, variety shows that are an inch more entertaining, and public affairs programs that are deeper in presentation, when it's a head-to-head battle, i can rely on ABS-CBN to constantly win the game. Take for example the battle between Maalaala Mo Kaya and Magpakailanman --- for a week or two i watch that of Mel Changco because in fairness those were good episodes. I knew ratings would turn sour for Charo Santos but look at Maalaala Mo Kaya now, they have reinforced their content and competed head on. In ratings tragedies like this, ABS-CBN always knows how to strongly arm themselves to leave the battlefield as the runaway winner. Almost the same scenario with their news. When there are big stories, say the Oakwood attack, ABS-CBN knows how to collect themselves together, sent forth an army of news crew and be there right where the news happens. The TUNAY NA MAAASAHAN slogan fits the king, as they say. What do i think about ABS-CBN? It is their reliability and resilience at any given time.

GMA Network resigns from KBP

By Mary Ann Ll. Reyes
The Philippine Star 09/05/2003

The Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) will not act on GMA Network’s resignation from the organization, until after the various cases filed against the network with the KBP have been disposed of and after GMA pays what is due the group, The STAR learned yesterday.

The KBP board, chaired by Cerge Remonde, in its meeting last Wednesday also accepted the resignation of KBP president Jose Antonio Veloso, a representative of GMA Network, and named executive vice-president Pinky Aseron to succeed him. Aseron took her oath on Wednesday.

GMA Network chairman Felipe Gozon, in a letter addressed to Remonde sent earlier this week, informed the KBP of the broadcasting company’s decision to resign from KBP, without stating any reason.

A source from the network, however, told The STAR that GMA wants KBP to agree to the network’s proposal to lift the current 18 minute per hour cap on commercials placement and any limit for that matter.

During its board meeting, the KBP formally acknowledged receipt of the letter of resignation of GMA.

Aseron also told The STAR in a telephone interview that the KBP by-laws prevent the group from taking action upon GMA’s resignation until after the cases pending before KBP against GMA have been disposed of and until GMA pays its outstanding dues.

In particular, section 7 of the by-laws states that any member may resign upon payment of fees due the organization, provided that no action shall be taken on such resignation if the member has a pending case with the KBP.

"Once these cases have been decided upon, that’s the time the KBP will act on GMA’s resignation," a KBP board member said.

Most of these cases against GMA involve violations of provisions of the Television Code, a set of rules promulgated by the broadcasting industry as part of their self-regulation.

One of these cases involves obscenity, in particular certain foul‚ statements uttered by Startalk host Rossana Roces in her show aired over GMA 7. The second one involves GMA news anchor Mike Enriquez who in several instances allegedly lambasted rival ABS-CBN on air, which is expressly prohibited in the Code. The third one involves commercial overloading. The rules provide for a maximum 18 minutes per hour of commercials.

A GMA official told The STAR that the network resigned from KBP as its membership in the organization is no longer beneficial to it.

A KBP source on the one hand revealed that GMA 7 knew that a suspension by the KBP was forthcoming and resigning now would prevent GMA from being put in a bad light. "Management of GMA also probably does not realize the implications of its move, especially on the advertisers," the source added.

There are reports that the Advertising Board (Ad Board), also headed by Remonde, will be meeting soon to discuss the possible implications of GMA’s resignation from KBP. But this early, The STAR learned that most of the major advertising agency associations in the country are already worried about the repercussions of GMA’s decision.

But most of these associations said they have been invited by GMA Network to discuss the matter and until after the meeting, they would not be in a position to judge GMA’s action. "We have also not received any advice from the KBP. In fact, we just read from The STAR about GMA’s resignation," one advertising executive said.

On the other hand, a highly placed source said GMA 7 has been barraged by questions from the advertising industry that it was forced to schedule meetings with the different organizations.

Boy Pangilinan of the 4As (Association of Accredited Advertising Agencies) told The STAR that their only concern is that if GMA is no longer part of KBP, it will no longer be a member of the Ad Board and therefore no longer covered by self-regulation. He refused to elaborate.

The head of one of the country’s largest advertising industry groups meanwhile said that as much as possible, the industry wants "to save the situation."

"But we will abide by whatever the Ad Board will decide eventually on the matter," the official said.

There are some ‘maverick’ agencies which this early are toying on the idea of including a clause in their broadcast order that if GMA violates current practices, the former reserves the right not to pay. "Expect the others however to ask GMA to reconsider its decision," an industry executive said.

This another tantrum by this Network only goes to show how insecure and childish they are.

GMA network can't even take responsibility for their action.  Mike Enriquez’s unethical and below the belt paninira to ABS-CBN and also the Lopezes and their company like Meralco are a regular fare in all his programs, I saw and heard it myself.

Now we can all see what they meant by Serbisyong Totoo , it's service for themselves and not to the public.

Apart from this issue they are still forcing SkyCable to rechannel all the VHF station to its original channel assignments regardless of the technical improbability and practicality just so they can bully and harass SkyCable.

tsk tsk tsk... It's only a matter of time before this network self destructs.

tik - tok  -  tik  -   tok   ;D :D ;D :D

Basically, GMA wants to overload its programs with commercials in order to meet its income from ads targets. Compared to ABS, GMA's rates are cheaper so they want to resort to quantity to make habol in income. They could have increased their rates and stay within the KBP mandated limits but that would push their prices closer to ABS which they do not want (because that would effectively make ABS rates competitive compared to them).

So, they would rather piss off their viewers by bombarding them with more commercials instead of charging their advertisers more.

SO where is the service?

What is even more baffling is, that he received local and international recognition as best news anchor.  Are we wrong on seeing him as an annoying and oa news reader?

I often catch him reading a tragic and sad news with a happy and joyfull expression on both his face and voice.  Paano kaya naging best news anchor in Asia si Mr. Enriquez???

Aside from being an news anchor, he is concurrently head of GMA's radio Network. I think was also responsible for programming WKC.

Neither. Both stations air too many numb and dumb shows.

agree. no originality on both sides.. they tend to copy each other.. 1st F4, then GMA came up wid some chinese band also.. ABS shows how desperate they are in their ratings kuz its falling.. (i.e.: they pirated lots of comedians originally from GMA)

i like Rhea Santos though.. she is d only edge GMA has!! :o

I just dip in & out of news channels & never watch for long. But no offense to anyone. ABS-CBN is somewhat bias on their news when involving the Lopezes on issues like the Meralco and etc (well, one should expect this). So personally, I opt for GMA when it comes to news. Although everyone has different preferences.

For the Sitcoms, here are my choices:
Monday  - Bida si Mister Bida si Misis (ABS-CBN)
Tuesday - Kool Ka Lang (GMA)
Wednesday - Klasmeyts (ABS-CBN)
Thursday - Maalaala Mo Kaya (ABS-CBN)
Friday      - Bubble Gang (GMA)
Saturday - Idol Ko Si Kap (GMA)
Sunday   -  RPN 9 pag may boksing.

I hate both Telenovela and Chinovela - walang kwenta.
Noontime Show - MTB or Eat Bulaga depende kung sino ang kasama ko na manood.

Favorites Anchors - Rhea Santos & Vicky Morales (GMA)
                             - Bernadette Sembrano (GMA)

I hate John Lapus ng ABS, over acting talaga.
I dont like Noli De Castro - walang nagawa sa senado.
I dont like Mike Enriquez - irritating nga. Buti na lang nalipat sa gabi and Saksi. Pag news sa gabi, World Tonight ako ng ANC Channel.

Overall, I would still rate GMA 10-9 ahead of ABS-CBN.

Not all the time siguro.  I've watched Mike Enriquez from time to time but couldn't even recall a single instance where he "lambasted" the Lopezes.  O natyempohan ko lang siguro na walang anomalies or issues with the Lopez's business?

When he was still an FM radio dj, he used the name  "Baby Mike" .

Aside from being an news anchor, he is concurrently head of GMA's radio Network. I think was also responsible for programming WKC.

Medyo "Thunder" na nga ako kasi I still remember, Mike Enriquez is Baby Michael who i used to listen with Hill Billy Willy on the station DWBL on the AM band. Hindi pa uso noon yung FM (Thunder talaga!  ;D ). Then nung lumipat yung mga music format stations from AM to FM, we heard them in DWKC (formerly DWEI, formerly DZHP), the station of RMN.

Buti pa noon nung DJ siya, oki naman ang dating ng boses (malayo talaga sa mukha!)
