What to buy? First timer in HT.
« on: Aug 16, 2009 at 05:36 PM »
Hello Pdvd!

I registered a few months back and I lurked this forum to learn more about setting up a simple movie-watching, music-listening and game-playing setup. After reading some threads and asking the nice people in some local audio shops, I was leaning on buying a Yamaha 363 with a ns-p320 5.1 speaker system. After years months of saving-up, and finally having money to buy the hardware, I was told that the 363 was phased-out  :'( and replaced with the 365.

Questions:
1. Is the 365 worth it? or should I look somewhere else.
2. What is blu-ray audio decoding? If I ever buy a PS3, is it supported?

Thank you very much!

Depends on your budget. How much are these gears being offered to you? Will you watch DVD's? or Blu-ray's?
2. What is blu-ray audio decoding? If I ever buy a PS3, is it supported?
Most DVD's soundtracks are Dolby Digital and DTS. Blu-ray has Dolby True HD and DTS Master Audio. Higher model receivers can decode True HD and DTS MA featured in Blu-ray discs.

5.1 Audio on PS3 will work on most receivers that have optical inputs being sold today
.

Thank you very much!

If you are on a budget, you can always build your system in phases.

Phase 1.) Get a good receiver and good bookshelf speakers for fronts.
Phase 2.) Buy a good display (LCD or Plasma)
Phase 3.) Add a subwoofer
Phase 4.) Complete your system with a center speaker and a pair of surround speakers.

Hope this helps. ;)

OR

4b. get a floorstander and place your "old" bookshelf at your rear for surrounds  :)

i'm going this route...

phase 1] Buy a display - done.  bought a 32x10
phase 2] Buy a receiver and bookshelf speakers for fronts
phase 3] Add a sub
phase 4] Buy a floorstander and convert bookshelf speakers for surrounds

and right now, i'm at phase 2.

what can you guys suggest (receiver and bookshelf speakers)?  best bang for the buck sana, pero brand new.

mostly for movie and TV watching.

sir jepoi..buy a receiver that is future proof for 5 yrs at least..get the receivers with HD audio decoders like TrueHd or DTS-HD etc

also I would suggest you get a receiver with Audyssey..its a good tool to improve the sound on your untreated room

speakers? some speakers match well with a specific receiver..check the speaker thread..there are tons of good speakers and are bang for the buck!

goodluck sir

1. buy the most expensive hardware on the list first (the panel).

2. buy an NMT with TBs of storage :D

3. buy a mid level receiver and an updated one. it is harder to re-sell an outdated entry level recievers at a good price than a second hand speakers.

3.1. if budget is a concern go for a good 3 speaker set (fronts and center) first rather than going for a cheaper 5 set speaker which is not so good and will not match you mid level receiver.

4. the sub completes the HT experience. the .1 ;) the subs will change everything so go for a good sub. you may think subwoofers are expensive but it plays a critical part in HT.

5. get good speaker cables, not expensive (or very expensive) but good thick speaker cables.
