Remote Control for HTPC
« on: Oct 07, 2009 at 10:41 AM »
I would like to ask your recommendations on what remote control to buy for HTPC.

Also, if you could give some information on how to install/configure it.

Thanks.

just asked this same question in the other HTPC setup thread  :)

Im thinking of this...

450 pesos from CDR King..
http://cdrking.com/local/products/index.php?action=mnu&temp=2&typeno=2401827-860948-805109133-4089869&prod=Remote%20Controls&prodcode=7468844-362689-477888968-3945820

Features
•   Product Model: PC Remote Control
•   Mini Size
•   Suports USB 1.1 / 2.0 Specification
•   Supports Windows 98, 2000, ME, XP, Vista
•   No need for driver support
•   Uses Lithium Cell CR 20253v
•   With 44 function keys
•   Suports Microsoft Media Center

Im just trying out XBMC.. so havent fully checked it out yet.. if its MS Media Center compatible, then this should do.  Have no idea if this remote is customizable though.  Or if XBMC wont run on it, then I could always use MS Media Center itself or some other similar compatible software....

Anyone who uses this device, feedback if you please.. :)

update ko lang for the benefit of the OP and other interested parties..

Just bought a PC Remote sa CDRKing.. 380 pesos lang, not 450 as listed on their website.

I saw 3 types (NOT the 450 one shown at their website). 2 were small thin remotes (parang car radio remote) and 1 is normal-sized TV remote, I chose the latter para mas madali hawakan and pindutin (besides it looks sturdier). Also bought a USB extension for 50 pesos.. set it up sa house.. from my PC using the usb extension na setup ko near TV yung IR port nya (so I can point the remote straight at the TV and NOT to the side sa may PC...) Plug and Play lang, no drivers, no installers.

It can control XBMC (my only media center for now) Basic controls lang pero workable na. Havent found the use for the other buttons yet (like which DVD player it can work on).  Will try Windows Media Center  next time...

just checked cdrking's website again.. wala pa rin pics doon yung 380 pesos model na sinabi ko. the pic there on their website is 450 pesos, pero yung design nya (slim, small and rectangular) is like 2 of the 3 types i saw. Besides, cdrking website doesnt say much anyway as far as its functions are concerned. Just that it's "Windows Media Center compatible".

As I mentioned, the type I bought looks almost like a regular TV or Universal TV remote.

Works ok with XBMC.
Also tried it with Media Center na, mas ok sya dun, kasi nga meant for that software siguro. If you are using Windows media center, pwedeng pwede na to IMO.

At the very least, whatever software you use, the cursor serves as a mouse so you can navigate and press ok (left-click).  Di lang syempre kasing bilis ng real mouse.

Been using my remote the past couple of nights.. galing talaga. Then when time to sleep e may standby mode pa sa PC so shutdown/Standby nya PC ko without me getting off the bed na.. ;D

you can check out eventghost to fully configure your remote with XBMC.

Madali lang,  Although I cannot help out anymore since I already forgot all I learned after getting my remote working many months ago. I think I also posted a tutorial. di ko na makita

For those who own an iPhone, you can leverage the cost and just purchase Mobile Air Mouse from http://www.mobileairmouse.com/

I use it on the MacBook to control Plex (www.plexapp.com) and its got a virtual keyboard to go with it. Should be perfect for any Media Centre app of your choice. It even detects currently running software so you can immediately use its navigation tools with the app.

This is an IP based remote, so it uses WiFi and not Bluetooth to control your Mac or PC wirelessly. The client app runs in your iPhone, while the free server app runs on your Mac or Windows computer.

For listening to iTunes, I use the free Remote app from Apple.

I have a problem..

I have the CDR-King remote control. This one...

Everything is working fine... all keys, everything for Windows Media Center 7.

Here's my problem... If I press the power button in the remote, my HTPC turns into Hybernate mode.. fine.  BUT, but.... Once I start using my TV remote control, my HTPC turns on...

Anybody has experienced this? I need help.. :)

SALAMAT PinoyDVD!

where did you get this in HK?

I tried Shamshuipo golden computer center first but no luck,

One shop had it, in the 1st floor mongkok computer center had it , I tried to bargain but no luck so I went around the 2nd and 3rd floors hoping another shop would sell it for less. But no other shop had it , I was showing the picture to the shops and asked if they had it ...

When I return to the 1st floor shop , it was gone  :( , it was just sold ..... , at first he asked me to return tommorrow at it was almost closing time , I said , i can't as I was flying back home . he called up someone and asked if I could wait 20 mins.... I said yes of course ..

The new Leadteks have nice looking MCE remotes now.

IF you have an MCE compatible remote, currently using a script that allows you to control your mouse and keyboard with your MCE remote!

PM if you want a copy.. its freeware, and I customized the script.

I am presently using the app Hippo Remote in my Ipad for my HTPC.  It controls the PC via wifi in a local network.  Functions as a trackpad and keyboard.

This app can also be used for the Iphone & Ipod Touch.  if you are using an Android phone, you might want to try RemoteDroid which functions the same way as the Hippo remote app.

This is one of the reasons I went back in using an HTPC.

A friend gave me this PC remote from CDRKing

And I tried it out with my HTPC.  My HTPC is running on Windows XP with XBMC as my media center and using VLC as my external player to play mkv and avi files. The IR receiver was easily detected and out of the box the up, down, left, right, enter, back, clear (quit), stop and power buttons were functioning already.  I was already satisfied with the el cheapo replacement for my wireless keyboard and Hippo remote (Ipad). I wanted to get the most out of the device and good thing with VLC you can assign hot keys to your keyboard or remote for different functions.

I assigned 1 for cycling through audio tracks, 2 for cycling subtitles & 3 for cycling aspect ratios.  There are still other functions that I can assign to the different numbers but so far this meets my needs. I find eventghost to be complicated and I was able to program the remote without it.

I also tried using the IR receiver for my Logitech Harmony but it seems that it cannot detect it.  I programmed Harmony for the Silverstone and Windows Media Center remotes but to no avail.

Are there other media players where you can program hotkeys for your remote? So far VLC has been giving me good service and is the most versatile that I have tried so far.

You can also add iso to be played by VLC.  Here's the script:

Quote
<playercorefactory>

 <players>

   <player name="VLC" type="ExternalPlayer" audio="false" video="true">

     <filename>C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\vlc.exe</filename>

     <args>"{1}" /fullscreen /close</args>

     <hidexbmc>false</hidexbmc>

     <hideconsole>false</hideconsole>

     <warpcursor>none</warpcursor>

   </player>

 </players>

 <rules action="prepend">

   <rule filetypes="mkv|avi|iso" player="VLC"/>

 </rules>

</playercorefactory>

Replace playercorefactory.xml in C:>>Program Files>>XBMC>>System>>playercorefactory.xml. Hope this helps!
