Sharp

Sharp launches two new Netflix-ready Aquos Blu-ray players

LAS VEGAS--Sharp trotted out two new Blu-ray players for 2010, the BD-HP70U and BD-HP24U, both of which offer Netflix video streaming. Neither offer any unique new features, but Sharp is touting them as having "cutting-edge" video and audio performance--and energy efficiency.

Both players deliver Full HD 1,920 x 1,080p video resolution at 24 frames per second over HDMI along with lossless Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. As for energy efficiency, Sharp says the the BD-HP70U and BD-HP24U offer a target use of just 14 watts of power in operating mode and 0.4 watt in standby.

The players are designed to be paired with Sharp's new Aquos Full HD LCD TVs. Using the Aquos Pure Mode, the players recognize the connection to an Aquos TV and automatically optimize the picture quality. Sharp says to further improve the image quality, the players incorporate Deep Color, "which extends the maximum number of colors for each color component, reducing and in some cases eliminating color component artifacts."

In terms of differences, the higher-end BD-HP70U simply offers better build quality and high-grade components, including a high-grade power supply along with high-grade capacitors and gold-terminals. The BD-HP70U also gives you the option of adding a wireless component.

"In addition to the Ethernet port for RSS feeds, BonusView/BD-Live content and Netflix on-demand movies, the BD-HP70U is wireless ready with a second USB port making the BD-HP70U model wireless-LAN-ready," Sharp notes.

Pricing and availability:
•The BD-HP70U will be available in Q2 2010 for a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $499.99
•The BD-HP24U will be available in Q1 2010 for an MSRP of $279.99

That's for sure unless you go for the higher end model. The Toshiba entry level Blu player at list price $200 is indeed a good price but actual retail price could be much cheaper. :)

DENON® INTRODUCES GROUNDBREAKING S-5BD BD/RECEIVER:
INTEGRATED PROFILE 2.0 BLU-RAY PLAYER AND 5.1-CHANNEL RECEIVER

— Award-Winning S-5BD BD/ Receiver Offers Superior Audio and Video Performance, High-Impact Surround Sound, Plus Convenience and Flexibility of Multi-Room A/V Networking —

LAS VEGAS, NV, January 7, 2010 - Denon Electronics, one of the world's premier manufacturers of high-quality home entertainment components, today introduced the S-5BD BD/Receiver, an innovative single-component home entertainment solution that elegantly combines an audiophile grade 5.1-channel surround sound receiver with an advanced Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player featuring BD Live connectivity. Named an International CES Innovations 2010 Design and Engineering Awards Honoree, the Denon S-5BD BD/Receiver is scheduled for availability in March 2010 with a suggested retail price of $1,799.

With its 5.1-channel surround sound receiver featuring 2-source, 2-zone distribution capabilities and advanced Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player featuring BD Live connectivity, the S-5BD BD/Receiver allows discriminating consumers to enjoy the very best in audio and video performance, including high-impact surround sound and state-of-the-art high-definition video, with the convenience and flexibility of multi-room audio/video. Notably, the S-5BD is one of the first products announced to feature HDMI 1.4 with support of Audio Return Channel.

Phil Cohn, Sr. Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Denon Electronics, noted: "The S-5BD brings together the finest of audio/video source components with 21st century connectivity and advanced surround sound processing to solve many of today's home entertainment challenges. It is ideal for discriminating space-conscious consumers who want to enjoy superior audio and video home entertainment without any "component clutter." Notably, in addition to being an audiophile-grade surround sound receiver, the S-5BD also has many of the same leading-edge technologies, breakthrough network interconnectivity and features as our revolutionary Model DVD-A1UDCI Blu-ray player at a significantly more affordable price."

Interconnectivity, Interactivity…and Total Ease-of-Use
Several technological advancements define the state-of-the-art S-5BD. The built-in Profile 2.0 Blu-ray Disc Player delivers video and audio perfection, with 1080p/24p video output, DVD video scaling up to 1080p, plus network interconnectivity and advanced interactivity with BD-Live. Denon engineers made connectivity a top priority in designing the S-5BD. The unit features convenient front-panel HDMI (3 inputs/1 output, all certified for HDMI 1.4) and SD card inputs, as well as iPodâ direct connectivity via the USB port (with connectivity for Denon's Networked Control Dock for iPod as well). For total ease of use, it provides Plug ‘n Play convenience (iPod/USB/Blu-ray/DVD/CD) as well as automatic sound mode, auto setup and an advanced GUI.

The S-5BD includes support for Dolby Pro Logic IIz, featuring Front Height Effects Channels, as well as Dolby TrueHD/ DTS-HD Master audio support for decoding the multi-channel recordings featured on Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs. The unit is 7.1 channel capable with preouts for Surround Back or Front Height Channels. For unrivaled audio quality, the unit features Denon's AL24 Processing, a high-grade analog waveform reproduction technology that dramatically enhances the music listening experience by improving the player's ability to reproduce moments when music quietly fades away or starts following complete silence. Other audio-enhancing technologies include strictly selected sound parts and Denon custom made OFC winding coil for improving.

Multi-Zone System Building, Ideal for Custom Installations
The unit provides a variety of high-performance options for multi-zone system building. For example, thanks to advanced Power Amplifier assignment for multi zone applications, users can enjoy a 3.1-channel main system and power up zone 2, or use the zone preamp output and still enjoy 7.1-channel surround on their main system.

The S-5BD is engineered specifically for use in today's advanced custom installation systems. Among its many custom installation-friendly features are RS-232 for 3rd Party control and assignable high current DC trigger outputs, as well as front-panel lockout and IR lockout. Additionally, in the event of future firmware updates and possible upgrades, owners of the S-5BD can download them directly via its Ethernet port.*

For total ease and accuracy of set-up, the unit features Audyssey MultEQ Auto Setup and Calibration. In addition, Audyssey Dynamic Volume, a volume leveling technology, frees listeners from the disruptive changes in volume levels when broadcast material changes between television shows and commercials or even while watching a movie. Coupled with Audyssey Dynamic Volume is Audyssey Dynamic EQ, a loudness correction technology that enhances the overall entertainment experience even further. At a lower playback volume, voices tend to change, bass disappears, and the surround soundstage becomes less enveloping. By selecting the correct frequency response and surround volume levels moment-by-moment, Dynamic EQ lets users enjoy the full palette of original rich sound at any volume.
*A home network is required for firmware updates and upgrade via the Ethernet port.

Sony Unveils BDP-S770, S570, and S370 Blu-ray Players

Sony opened the floodgates this year, debuting their new monolithic designed home theater line, including a trio of Blu-ray players.

This coming spring brings us a pair of new Sony Blu-ray players; the BDP-S570 and the BDP-S370. Both of the new BD Players feature Sony’s BRAVIA Monolithic design – which is much more evident a difference in their televisions – and full 1080p playback of Blu-ray discs. They decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, and can play a variety of audio and video files from networked sources thanks to DLNA compatibility.

They differ mainly when it comes to internet content. They both have access to an increasingly impressive assortment of content providers that includes Netflix, Amazon, NPR and Pandora. Only the S570 can get there wirelessly right out of the box. The S370 simply sports an Ethernet port, but a wireless adapter can be added.

The BDP-S570 also offers a feature that was extremely popular at CES 2010. It’s got a different name from each company, but everyone seems to be offering noise reduction for online content. Blowing up a YouTube video or even HD content from Netflix to a size it wasn’t originally meant to be viewed at can be detrimental to picture quality. The S570 should clean that up a bit.

Sony’s BDP-S770 Blu-ray player will be coming out in the summer and offer all of the features of the S570 but with the addition of Blu-ray 3D playback. Like the S370 and S570, it’s got quick start and fast loading options and can be controlled by both the iPhone and iPod Touch with the addition of a free app.

Pricing is not yet available for Sony’s new Blu-ray players.

Panasonic Offers End to End 3D Solutions

Whether you’re looking for a 3D Blu-ray player, video camera, TV or even a slick pair of 3D glasses, Panasonic’s got your back.

At this year’s CES, Panasonic spoke a great deal about being the only company to offer a complete end to end solution for 3D television. It’s an impressive boast, and it means that customers can stick to one brand without having to worry about compatibility.

This spring will see the launch of Panasonic’s 3D VIERA plasmas which range from fifty to sixty-five inch class sizes. Pricing isn’t yet available for the new sets; it seems like each company is waiting to see what the other will do. We do know that a single pair of 3D glasses will be included with each purchase.

The new plasmas include all the features found on Panasonic’s top of the line 2D televisions. VIERA CAST is prime among these features, and offers customers a chance to watch videos on Netflix and make video calls with Skype.

Panasonic’s DMP-BDT350 is their contribution to the 3D Blu-ray player race. It plays back 3D video in 1080p resolution and sports Adaptive Chroma Upsampling to keep colors faithful to their source. It’s BD-Live capable of course, and features 7.1 channel lossless audio. It handles Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

Panasonic’s glasses are active shutter, unlike the kind found in theaters. They’re lightweight and comfortable, and fit over normal glasses without too much trouble. The thing that sets Panasonic’s 3D glasses apart from the rest though, is that they look fairly stylish. Don’t expect to see people wearing them out in public, as they’re still obviously 3D glasses, but you won’t look like a total dork wearing them in the house.

CES 2010 Wrap-up: The Top Five Blu-ray Players

Another consumer electronics show has come and gone, and while it’s fun to marvel at each new piece of equipment, it doesn’t mean anything until we know how it all lines up.

To start things off, we’ve taken a look at all the standalone Blu-ray players revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show – many of which we got to go hands on with – and we’ve pitted them against each other until only five remained.

1.) LG BD590 - LG stepped up big this year with the BD590. It’s got built in WiFi connectivity that lets it connect to any 802.11n wireless home network and, of course, wireless g and b networks as well. It’s DLNA compliant so you can stream audio and video from your home computer and it’s got access to some pretty cool online services like Netflix and Vudu. Oh, and did we mention a 250GB hard drive?

The BD590 is the first Blu-ray player to feature a hard drive built into it. You can rip CDs right onto it, and store audio, video and picture files right on your Blu-ray player. Purchased movies can also be downloaded and stored directly from Vudu.

Unfortunately, the BD590 doesn’t rip DVDs or Blu-ray discs, but that’s not entirely surprising. It may play ripped DVD files though, and we’ll find that out as more details come out. LG’s BD590 hits in late spring/early summer of 2010 at an as of yet unannounced price.

2.) Sony BDP-S770 – Sony’s Monolith design is fantastic when it comes to televisions, but the Blu-ray players have a bit of that 1980’s square bulk look to them. While the look of a player is important, it’s the functionality that really matters and the S770 is a workhorse.

The S770 is at the top of Sony’s new Blu-ray lineup, and is the only new Sony player to offer Blu-ray 3D playback. It doesn’t slack when it comes to 2D though; it does everything the rest of Sony’s 2010 BD player lineup does. It decodes and bitstreams Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, and upconverts DVDs to 1080p. It’s got built in 802.11n WiFi and access to BRAVIA Internet video.

What may be the most promising feature of Sony’s S770, if 3D isn’t your thing, is an option that they call IP Content Noise Reduction. When streaming from Amazon, YouTube or Netflix, the S770 Blu-ray player will clean up the picture with a technology specifically made for web video. There’s no date or price on this one either, but we’re told to expect it this summer.

3.) McIntosh MVP881BR – We’d be remiss not to mention McIntosh’s Blu-ray debut. It may be a bit out of your price range, but if you can swing the $8,000 price, you’ll get an impressive Blu-ray player indeed. The MVP881BR doesn’t stream audio and video, it doesn’t access Netflix and it doesn’t let you make Skype calls on your television. It’s a Blu-ray player designed to do one thing, and to do it well.

McIntosh’s Blu-ray player is made with the same high quality components as their audiophile grade amplifiers and processors. It’s enclosed in a custom steel and aluminum case that eliminates vibration and shields circuits from interference.

It supports Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio codecs, and a 24-bit, 192kHz PCM 7.1 channel bitstream is available. A quartet of 32-bit, 192kHz stereo DACS provide the 7.1 channel audio output, while a fifth supplies the stereo down mix. It also sports 14-bit video DACS that work with the Silicon Optics HQV Realta processor to provide a noise free and vibrant image.

4.) Samsung BD-C6900 – Samsung had a lot of cool new tech to show off at CES this year, and the BD-C6900 was right up there at the top of the list. It’s a 3D player that keeps all the 2D features and adds a few additional apps.

Samsung’s new app store is an open platform device, which they hope will explode in the same way that the iPhone app store did. There will be free apps released initially with premium apps to come, and the player will be able to access services like Netflix, Vudu, Blockbuster and Pandora right out of the box.

The BD-C6900 offers built-in WiFi, a quick load time (15 seconds as estimated by Samsung), and it outputs video at 1080p24/50/60. And while the success of the 3D video that it plays is still a big question mark, we can say for sure that this player itself looks slick while in motion. The clear panel above the spinning disc creates a very cool effect when you can see it.

5.) Panasonic DMP-BD85 – The DMP-BD85 is the king of Panasonic’s new 2D Blu-ray players. VIERA CAST has been upgraded for all models with the addition of Netflix. The BD85 streams the video service thanks to an included wireless LAN adaptor. It also employs a range of new technologies that go a long way to improve the quality of both video and audio.

To start with, Panasonic’s new Blu-ray players all incorporate a feature called PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus which helps to ensure that colors are accurately reproduced. The BD85 steps things up with gold plated terminals.

Audio is where the BD85 really shines. It decodes the usual assortment of audio formats but adds a HDMI Jitter Purifier to ensure clear robust bass sounds. It’s also got a built-in Digital Tube Simulator, that helps reproduce those warm tube amplifier sounds. The BD85 even has 7.1 channel analog outputs to complete the audio experience.

Honorable Mention: Sony Playstation 3 – The PS3 is getting two big firmware upgrades in the near future. The first will let it play Netflix without the need for a disc, which puts it back in the conversation when talking about connected Blu-ray players.

The second will let it play 3D Blu-ray discs in – according to claims made by Sony at the show – full 1080p. As Blu-ray players go, the PS3 is still impressive. It’s got a seemingly unending stream of manufacturer support coming to it in the form of regular firmware updates and increased functionality, something that few other players can claim. Oh, and it plays games too.

I hope the HDD is user interchangeable. Next year will be 3D WI-FI NMT/BD players from all the major manufacturers. Does it have MKV playback like the LG-BD390?

Would just like to ask a question regarding blu ray players since I am planning to buy one. What regions can the blu ray player play when it comes to DVD's? Since my collection is a mixture of Region 1 and 3 dvd's and I am not planning to replace them all with blu ray.

Is there a brand that could play multiple regions when it comes to DVD's?

Thanks ani advance for the advise.

If you intend to use a Blu-ray player capable of playing multiple region DVDs, the immediate brand that come to mind is "OPPO" namely the BDP-83.
http://www.oppodigital.com/blu-ray-bdp-83/

It's a great player that can perform DVD Up-Conversion very well. It has many other great features.

Try to check the other brands new models to be released this year listed on this thread.

Anthem Launches BLX 200 Blu-ray Player

It’s the first Blu-ray player from Anthem, and it’s available now.

The BLX 200 is the first of what will almost certainly be a long line of Blu-ray players from Anthem. The company is known for making higher end products like amplifiers, receivers, and projectors to complement the loudspeaker offerings of its parent company Paradigm.

Anthem’s BLX 200 doesn’t have much in the way of network functionality or internet streaming, though it does have BD-Live functionality. Instead, the focus is on audio and video quality before anything else.

The BLX 200 offers a 12-bit video pipeline, which means less noise and a sharper picture. It outputs Blu-rays at 1080/24p, and upscales DVDs to 1080p. Of course, if you’ve got a receiver that upscales better, you can send a 480i signal straight to it.

For BD-Live purposes, the BLX 200 has a gigabyte of internal storage and comes with a USB dongle that adds another two gigs on top of that. The BLX is sturdy, with a brushed aluminum faceplate, and offers some nice internal hardware as well. 12-bit, 162-MHz video DACs are a nice touch.

The big downside to Anthem’s new player is the eight hundred dollar price tag. It’s a bit difficult to determine just why we’d want to pay that much more for a player that doesn’t seem significantly better than the go-to Oppo BDP-83.

The Anthem BLX200 runs $799 and is now shipping in black.

There are quite a number of multi-region (both DVD & BD) BD players from various manufacturers such as SONY, Samsung, etc. Search the ebay for listing. :)
