Every film magazine and critic and blogger seems to be coming up with a Best of the Decade list, why not us, on Filipino films? What's your list?

These are the films I liked. Omissions like Lav Diaz, etc. might be because I haven't seen their movies or have just simply forgotten to include. For example I haven't seen Batang Westside and most of Raya Martin's.

My list is quite a mixed bag and admittedly not an extensive one,but these movies IMO are among the most notable,if not the best,Filipino movies of the Noughties:

Judy Ann was excellent in the title role while the film was okay... not great.

I loved Babae Sa Bubungang Lata but it was shown during the latter part of the 90's...

But that's how it goes--we have our own list, and it's fun to share em. Funny to see the love for Laman--I thought I was the only one.

I liked Pangarap Ng Puso but was disappointed with some of the performances particularly Hilda Koronel and Leo Rabago although Matet and Alex Alano were both brilliant...

Laman I thought was Maryo J. at his most daring... I thought it's much, much better than Magnifico...

Fair enough. I did think (as did whatsisname, in the Inquirer, that the young girl who plays Matet's character as a child was very good.

I thought Magnifico's script was very good, but that Maryo J. did a better job of directing in Laman. Plus--Lolita de Leon! She did only this and retired, didn't she?

Anyone knows where she is now? Loved Albert Martinez's performance in Laman. Though I think Oropesa stole everyone's thunder.

That's great casting, the girl who played the young Matet looks exactly like her... amazing!

Magnifico was good and yes, agree with you on the script. The direction and performances in Laman were outstanding although the script had minor quibbles but it's an otherwise excellent film. I have no idea what happened to Lolita de Leon and Laman was the only film she made.

If I were feeling naughty, I'd try make a case that O'Hara's low-budget inventiveness is equal to all forty two or so hours of Lav Diaz's moral gravity--but I'll behave.

I was going to say Michiko is the best Filipino screenwriter of the decade (is it possible Pete Lacaba didn't do a single script the past ten years?), but there's Lav--always Lav. His work makes everyone else's (Cameron's included) look small.

Do you have a single favorite film, techno? And have you seen anything by Lav Diaz?

'tuhog' for me is the best film of the noughties with 'jay', a close second. unfortunately, i have yet to see any of lav diaz's epic films though i've seen the (head-scratching, for me anyway) 'hubad sa ilalim ng buwan' and snippets of 'serafin' and 'burger boys'. i'm also eager to see o'hara's 'babae sa breakwater' and brillante's 'manoro' and 'tirador'.

i forgot to include these films which i found quite interesting:

Oh, agreed on Altar, definitely, and Raya's always worth looking at. Same with John Torres.

You should also check out Mario O'Hara's Pangarap ng Puso. Used to be available on Regal Videos, not anymore apparently. Should be copies here, there.

Tuhog I think is pretty good.

re "tuhog," bing lao helped quite a lot with the editing of the film. and apart from the script he he should've won an award for that. i also find his script of "la vida rosa" superior. it's by far the edgiest star cinema prod ever.

I liked La Vida Rosa better.

As for Bing Lao scripts, I think it's a close race between Takaw Tukso and Pila Balde.
