Panasonic opens 3D Innovation Lab

Following the unveiling earlier this year of ESPN’s Innovation Lab for development of 3DTV, among other technologies, and the opening this year of various Sony 3D production and research facilities from Culver City, Ca., to Las Vegas, Panasonic Corp. has established its own 3D Innovation Center in Japan to accelerate the development of its 3D business.

This center, scheduled to become fully operational on July 12, will serve as a contact point for customers related to the 3D business by coordinating the various departments within the Panasonic Group, in order to provide said customers with optimum solutions in this business. Through this initiative, Panasonic aims to achieve growth in its network AV business, one of the company’s key business fields, and contribute to the expansion of the 3D industry as a whole.

The following two activities are now being launched in Japan as part of this center’s initiatives:

* Panasonic Authoring Center Roppongi, a Panasonic Blu-ray Disc authoring site in Japan, will start its Blu-ray 3DTM authoring services on June 4, 2010.

* The Panasonic 3D Camera (AG-3DA1) Seminar 2010 is open this month at Panasonic Digital Software Laboratory, Tennozu, Tokyo, to help video producers learn about everything from the basics to the applications of 3D video production.

Panasonic foresees the expansion of 3D technology in a diverse range of industries that will include healthcare, education, and arts.

Is this realistic 3D hologram the TV of the future?

What if you could walk around an image, viewing it from any direction? That's the promise of the HoloAD Diamond Series, demonstrated at Computex in Taipei last week. It's a crude example of a full holographic TV, using three displays and strategically placed reflecting glass plates to give you a multi-perspective look at various objects. This is getting awfully close to that 360-degree holographic projection of Princess Leia talking about how Obi-Wan is her only hope.

The pyramid-shaped product gets its images from Flash video files, otherwise known as FLV files. You feed those frames into it using simple USB memory devices. The images displayed are moving videos with multiple perspectives. This goes way beyond the still holographic images we've seen in the past.

Crude as it is, the display has a distinct advantage over most holographic experiments: it's not a design concept, but a shipping consumer product. There are two models now available: one with a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels, and the other at 1,280 x 1,024. However, there was no price mentioned for either one. See exactly how it looks in the video below.

Sanyo Announces Ultra-Short-Focus 3D Projectors

Sanyo has announced two new ultra short-focus projectors with 3D capability, the PDG-DWL2500 and PDG-DXL2000. Both projectors have chasses that are about half the size of conventional short-focus projectors.

The PDG-DWL2500 provides native WXGA resolution (1,280 by 800 pixels; 16:10 aspect ratio) with 2,500 lumens of brightness, and the PDG-DXL2000 is XGA resolution (1,024 by 768; 4:3 aspect ratio), producing 2,000 lumens.

Through a newly developed ultra short-focus mirror-projection optical unit, both projectors operate at an extremely short distance from the display surface or screen. The PDG-DWL2500 creates an 80-inch image at a position only 12.6 inches from the screen, which Sanyo claims is the shortest-throw unit on the market today. The PDG-DXL2000 requires only 15.1 inches for an 80-inch image. Both projectors offer a maximum image size of either 110 inches (DWL2500) or 90 inches (DXL2000).

Fully enabled for large screen display of 3D material, both projectors use the Frame Sequential Display Format to display 3D, which works in conjunction with Active Shutter 3D glasses to rapidly alternate display between the right and left eyes.

Panasonic goes crazy and offers 152-inch 3D TV

As most manufacturers are gingerly increasing their 3D TV sizes over the span of a few months, Panasonic has already announced shipment of a 3D set that is twice the size of any other commercial unit on the market today.

According to Cnet, the Panasonic TH-152UX1 is mainly focused on large-scale digital signage. There's no HDMI input like a "normal" TV, though the unit's 4096x2, 160 resolution and 5,000,000:1 contrast ratio would make a nice accessory to any mansion.
The device is set to start shipping in Japan and North America by the autumn season of this year.

Panasonic is known for its lavishly huge TV sets. It may be one way for the company to tout the capabilities of plasma, an HDTV technology that most other companies put on the backburner. Panasonic deals exclusively in plasma sets, despite the fact that TV sales have been leaning strongly in the direction of LCD and LED.

In 2007, the company launched a 103-inch plasma TV, which sold 15 units in its first calendar year on the market.

Stereoscopic 3D coming "soon" to Xbox 360

A leading games developer has claimed that Microsoft is planning to announce stereoscopic 3D support on the Xbox 360 "soon."

The claim was made by Blitz Games Studios' co-founder Andrew Oliver at a recent Westminster eForum  seminar, and comes on the same day that Sony officially announced stereoscopic 3D support for the PlayStation 3.

PS3 games such as Wipeout HD, PAIN and Super Stardust HD have all now been given a 3D makeover.

Games industry news site Develop attended the seminar, titled "2020 Vision - web-enabled television, 3D and future TV tech," and quotes Oliver as saying: "Microsoft are going to be making an announcement about it [3D] at some point soon."

Oliver co-founded Blitz Games Studios with his twin brother Philip over 20 years ago, and he's also famous for creating the 8-bit Dizzy franchise in the 1980s. Now working on big titles such as Dead to Rights Retribution, the Leamington Spa developer works closely with both Microsoft and Sony.

"There's lots of games coming on the PlayStation 3 very shortly in 3D," he noted, while admitting that the stereoscopic 3D situation on the Xbox 360, "has been rather quiet."

Of course, "soon" could mean absolutely anything, but Develop speculates that Microsoft could be gearing up to announce stereoscopic 3D support for the Xbox 360 at E3 next week. It's a fair assumption, but it might also detract attention from the launch of Microsoft's new Natal control system.

Oliver says that developing a game that supports both normal TVs and 3D TVs is not necessarily a big task. "It is just a case of adding a mode into the options menu, so there's no need for two different products," he explained.

However, EA's CEO John Riccitiello recently predicted that it would take a good three years before stereoscopic 3D became a standard in gaming. The big cheese of EA reckons that it's easy enough to add 3D support to an existing game, but properly developing a game to take advantage of the extra dimensions will require a lot more work.

Nintendo 3D DS – hands-on first impressions

I had my doubts about Nintendo's ability to deliver on this one. I mean, 3D without glasses?

But after a quick ten-minute session backstage at E3, I have to say I was impressed.

The 3.5 inch screen has remarkable definition, and the 3D effect is subtly different from that found on TV sets. The depth of the picture seems to lie inside the screen, rather than jumping out of it, but the effect on distances and the feeling of reality is remarkable.

Tantalisingly, Nintendo's CEO Satoru Iwata (pictured) told us that the machine is capable of playing 3D movies. Perhaps the 3DS has a future for people with kids who don't want to splash out on a full-size 3D screen for the sake of cartoons.

Otherwise, the 3DS feels similar to the existing DS, with the same SD card slot, and wifi connectivity. The camera, though is special. Two lenses mounted on the lid allow users to take photos in 3D, which is a slightly eerie experience.

So, despite earlier reservations, I think Nintendo has a winner on its hands.

Ok!  The Nintendo press conference at E3 just finished.  Here are the facts:

Nintendo 3DS will have two screens: the top is 3D, the bottom is 2D and is a touch screen.  Auto-stereoscopic, of course!

Users can control the level of 3D depth with an analog slider.
The 3DS will feature a stereoscopic 3D camera!
The 3DS features a gyro and motion sensor.
Nintendo 3DS will be wireless and have a content download feature at no extra cost.  The connections are supposed to be completely automatic and happen without the user knowing.  Not sure about the legality of this for privacy reasons, but I'm sure Nintendo thought of this already.
Nintendo already has the backing of several third party game developers including EA, THQ, Ubisoft, Capcom Entertainment, and more.
The 3DS will be able to show 3D Hollywood movies, and is already demonstrating trailers on the show floor.

Wow!  Looks like 3D is really taking the cake at E3 this year!

3D TV showing of World Cup is nifty, if not without issues

Three-dimensional TV is a kick. At least, I think so after watching World Cup soccer in 3D.
I felt like I was inside the Durban soccer stadium, where Germany routed Australia, though South Africa is halfway around the world from ESPN's Bristol, Conn., headquarters, where I watched on an off-the-shelf 46-inch Samsung LED 3D TV.

TV: Watch Baig on ABC's 'America This Morning' Fridays 4:30 a.m. ET or check local listings

Especially on close-ups and replays, the 3D broadcast added depth and perspective that's impossible to duplicate on the two-dimensional TVs we've watched for years, even high definition.

With the World Cup on now, ESPN launched its 3D channel. But the channel won't air when there's no actual live sporting event taking place. ESPN has previously produced Masters Golf, a Harlem Globetrotters game, and a 2009 USC vs. Ohio State college football game in 3D.

Next month, the YES Network, FSN Northwest and DirecTV will produce a New York Yankees-Seattle Mariners baseball game in 3D. A few days later, Major League Baseball's All-Star game will be broadcast in 3D.

Nascar speeds onto the 3D track

The first-ever Nascar race to be broadcast in 3D will be presented on July 3, available on TV exclusively through DirecTV, but it will also be streamed live in 3D on Nascar's Web site.

The Coke Zero 400 race in Daytona will be the first major sporting event to be streamed live in stereoscopic 3D online. Users will need a specific 3D computer, as well as active shutter glasses, to enjoy the 3D event. Those with only a 3D TV, though, can also watch as long as they have DirecTV, which is proving itself as an innovator in 3D broadcasting much in the same way it did with a huge adoption of HD content.

"One of our goals here at NASCAR is to continuously explore ways to improve the viewing experience for our fans. Offering the Coke Zero 400 in 3D on NASCAR.COM and select television distributors is a great example of that consistent exploration. Our fans have been asking us about 3D for several months, so we’re excited to deliver that to them for the first time ever in what will likely change how NASCAR is consumed moving forward," said Nascar Media Group COO Jay Abraham in a statement.

Nascar joins a growing list of sports names that have made the jump to 3D. FIFA is providing unparalleled 3D coverage of the World Cup at this moment, the Yankees have decked out their stadium with 3D equipment, and even golf, with the Masters tournament earlier this year, has gotten the 3D treatment.

The online 3D stream will be available at nascar.com/racebuddy3D

Monster's "universal" 3D shutter glasses aren't crazy expensive

Apparently, products in the burgeoning 3D TV market are so expensive that Monster's new universal glasses actually seem somewhat affordable.

Monster, a company best known and lambasted for selling products like a $500 HDMI cable, has debuted its first accessory for the 3D market, a pair of universal active shutter glasses.
The company claims its Monster Vision Max 3D glasses are "the world’s first and only universal wireless 3D eyewear 'shutter system.'" They are programmed to work with all brands of stereoscopic 3D TVs. Currently, only manufacturer-specific glasses work with the stereoscopic standard. So, Samsung 3D TVs only work with Samsung 3D glasses.

One negative aspect of Monster's solution is that the Max 3D glasses require a separate transmitter. On the flip side, though, this eliminates eye strain caused by the infrared signal that current 3D TVs use to communicate with their branded glasses.

The glasses will be sold in a Starter Kit that contains one pair, as well as the transmitter kit, for around $250. Additional pairs will be sold for $170. By comparison, manufacturer-specific glasses currently sell for around $150 per pair. Monster's glasses will be available in September.

"3D technology is fast becoming the ‘Holy Grail’ in advanced home entertainment and gaming, and until now there has not been a really great solution for enjoying the maximum power of the 3D effect in comfort, convenience and style," said company "Head Monster" Noel Lee in a statement. "Thanks to our uniquely innovative method for delivering the 3D signal, wearers of our Monster Vision Max 3D glasses will not only be able to immerse themselves in a world of incredibly realistic 3D images, but they will be able to watch for hours without common effects of fatigue and eye strain caused by traditional IR based Shutter lenses."

LG's BX580 3D Blu-ray Player is Available Now

It comes in at just under $300 at Amazon.

The latest in 3D Blu-ray players is the LG BX580. It does HDMI 1.4 and it can handle 3D content right out of the box, unlike a lot of other players.

Aside from the 3D capabilities, the BX580 doesn't do anything too far out of the ordinary. It upscales DVDs to 1080p, and plays back a variety of video and audio formats including DivX, MKV, AVI and XviD. It can access internet based content from providers like CinemaNow, Netflix, Vudu, and Pandora.

The BX580 also sports built-in WiFi that works on the 2.4Ghz band, a USB port for watching movies and listening to music and, of course, the ability to play back Blu-ray movies in 1080p/24.

The MSRP on the LG BX580 is $399, but it's currently selling on Amazon for $299.86.

A few auto-stereoscopic or glasses-free displays are shown last CES but still prototype, none of them are in the market yet.

Some started to appear lately, one from Toshiba a 21 incher and one from a UAE-brand Merlin (not really a 3D TV cos its a 3D portable player).

UAE firm launches portable 3-D player

Dubai: Capitalising on the latest three-dimensional craze spurred by the hugely successful movie Avatar, two brothers running a Dubai-based electronics company say they have released the world's first portable 3-D movie player that does not require special glasses.

Dubai-born brothers Sharad and Rohit Bachani say their UAE-based company Merlin has launched its new Pocket Theatre 3D on big-named store shelves across the country.

"Glasses-free 3-D — also known as auto-stereoscopic 3-D is a technology that promises to change the way people view 3D content," Rohit, sales and marketing head of Merlin, told Gulf News.

"The Merlin 3D player incorporates a high-end digital LCD display with a parallax barrier to ensure realistic 3D viewing without the need for any special glasses. Aside from being very convenient, this also greatly reduces the cost of bringing 3-D to the user as the glasses can be quite costly."

After six months of product research, Merlin is building the user-friendly unit in partnership with original equipment manufacturers.

"The Merlin Pocket Theatre 3D is great for watching 3-D movies like Avatar or photos taken with a 3-D camera like the new Fujifilm or the Merlin 3D camera launching next month," Rohit said. "But it's also great for watching regular 2-D movies and photos. The Merlin 3D player has a built in auto convert feature that allows you to watch any regular movie or image in 3-D."

Merlin earned a nomination last month in the Middle East Retail Academy 2010 Awards in the category of Middle East Digital Lifestyle Brand of the Year. Merlin was the only local company to vie for the award.

Weighing less than 250 grammes, the unit retails across the UAE for Dh1,500.

Would you buy this technology from an unknown, home-grown brand? Or would you wait for an established brand to launch a similar product? Is 3D the future of visual media?

US consumers purchase $55 million worth of 3D TVs and Blu-ray players, despite the glasses

It's early days yet, but NPD claims that revenue from US sales of 3D TVs and standalone 3D-capable Blu-ray players has exceeded $55 million in the first three months of availability. Mind you, this steady growth comes despite the absence of some major players. While that number might sound big, it's tiny in comparison to the total number of TVs sold each month in the US and, according to our friend Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis at NPD, sales are expected to remain small throughout 2010. Regarding those much maligned 3D glasses, only 10% of those surveyed by NPD cited "looking silly" as a main concern. Instead, the biggest concern was not having enough glasses on hand for everyone looking at the set. A concern driven by cost, undoubtedly, and a dearth of survey participants from New York's trendy Lower East Side.

It should work ok. yan ang problema wala pang standard ang 3d glasses at least gumawa ang Monster ng gaya nyan.

Does 3D bluray discs can also be viewed in 2D?

If its the content you are asking, there are 3D Tvs that has an auto-convert function w/c allows you to switch from a 3D content to a standard format or vise-versa w/ just a push of a button. Otherwise, not unless the disc has a 2D version, you will see a double vision images of the 3D movie(see sample pics fr. previous pages). But really depends on the depth setting of the movie or a scene, pag too much depth or pop-out effect double vision na talga ang labas kasi.

Sony Goes All-In For 3D

Sir Howard Stringer, CEO of Sony Corp. starts off the proceedings

While Sony put on an impressive preview of their 3D flat panel HDTVs at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this past January (complete with a mini-concert captured live in 3D with Sony Music’s popular teen songstress Taylor Swift), their mid-June press event at Sony Picture Studios in Culver City pulled out all the stops.

Despite a horrendous traffic snarl that morning that could only occur in LA (the 405 freeway was closed, with mid-morning traffic diverted to local streets near Sony Picture Studios), Sony put on an impressive event that firmly underscored their commitment to 3D, both in the theater as well as in the home.

Sir Howard Stringer, Sony’s CEO, led off the event with a synopsis of Sony’s total circle 3D strategy, which includes major participation in six critical areas that they feel aren’t matched by any other CE maker. Content is key, of course, and of the major CE makers, Sony is the only one with a movie and TV studio division, a point driven home with numerous clips of new (Wheel Of Fortune) and old (The Three Stooges) content re-purposed in 3D. Sports has been a big driver of new display technologies, and Sony presented clips of golf and soccer in 3D that looked great, even on their front projection theater-style screen with passive (polarized) Real3D glasses. It’s a virtual certainty that when viewed at home on a 3D HDTV flat panel with active (shutter-type LCD) glasses, the 3D experience will be even better.

Sir Howard then introduced a number of senior Sony executives, including the heads of key divisions such as Sony Pictures Studios, SCEA (the division responsible for the PS3 console family and PS3 gaming), Sony’s consumer electronics arm (TVs, Blu-ray players), among others, which included impressive demos of upcoming 3D PS3 game titles—underscoring the fact that 3D at home won’t necessarily be driven by Blu-ray movies alone (indeed, it’s entirely possible that gamers could be the lead dogs in the acceptance of 3D in the home).

Other speakers at the event included executives from Discovery Channel, ESPN and IMAX, who laid out plans for delivering compelling 3D content, and demo’d impressive clips, the best of which surely had to be the IMAX 3D clip of the space shuttle repairing the Hubble telescope—a breathtaking sight even in 2D, but just freaking amazing to watch in 3D.

After the main event, attendees went next door to an adjacent soundstage, where multiple vignettes were set up featuring 3D in the home in various flavors that Sony envisions. Highlights included PS3 game demos, as Sony had already stated that a 3D firmware upgrade for the PS3 would be available sometime this summer (perhaps by July?).

Notable demos included a direct comparo/shoot-out between a Sony 3D LED-edgelit flat panel next to a Samsung 3D 8000 series equivalent, with Sony touting their expanded infrared dispersion for better IR sync lock off-axis. However, the difference was at best small, as even with the slightly (and only ever-so-much) inferior Samsung, both sets delivered a reliable IR sync lock at the kind of viewing angles that most users would deem acceptable.

Power consumption comparo between Panasonic’s 50” 3D plasma and Sony’s 52” LED edgelit 3D LCD—about a 50% improvement when the differences between screen sizes are factored in. Compared to earlier-generation big-screen HDTVs, both sets are miles ahead in terms of eco-friendliness.

Behind that demo, they had another comparo, this time with a Panasonic set (as with the Samsung, electrical tape had been employed to cover the brand logos on the competitive sets, but just about everyone in attendance knew who the players were, regardless), with digital watt-meters on prominent display showing the Sony set’s power consumption to be roughly one-half that of the Panasonic. But, on a per diagonal inch basis, the Panny’s power consumption is actually less than that of an earlier generation Sony 34” CRT-based HDTV, which just goes to show that eco-wise, the HDTV industry is moving forward across all fronts.

Are Samsung 3D products non-compatible with other 3D products from Panasonic and Sony? We tried a Samsung 3D blu-ray on a Panasonic 3D Plasma and they didn't work. Sony and Panasonic 3D products are compatible daw.

From what I know its only the 3d glasses that should have a compatibility issue but for the TV and BD3D player not to work, I'm not sure. On a side note, Cnet came up w/ a shootout of these 3 brands you just mentioned but unfortunately the reviewer failed to write w/c bd3d player they used.

Bitin ako sa testing ng Panny 3D 65"!  :( Would wait na lang for the PS3 3D firmware to see  if it will be compatible with the Panny. According to Listening Room, meron na daw Onkyo reciever w/HDMI 1.4 locally. If you want DTS MA and 3D, you'll have to change you're existing reciever too... :(

nice that's huge 65"  :o  yep, they already sell the entry level like Onkyo 608.

Halos lahat palit display, player, a/vr, talagang ganyan there's a premium price for being an early adopter but there's a cheaper alternative naman.
