3D Gaming Won't Make Your Eyes Stick That Way, Says Top Doc

Stereoscopic 3D video games and movies make your eyes do weird things to create the illusion of depth. As a result, for some, 3D viewing elicits a feeling of imbalance, disorientation or a general indication that lunch is on its way back up.

But beyond those short-term effects, with 3D televisions hitting the market and Sony and Nintendo releasing 3D stereoscopic video games, is there risk of permanent eye damage from exposing eyeballs to the faux third dimension for prolonged periods of time?

"It's not likely to cause any permanent harm to vision," said Dr. Mark Borchert, a respected L.A.-based ophthalmologist with the American Academy of Ophthalmology, talking to Gamasutra. He was named as one of the best doctors in Southern California by the L.A. Times in 2009.

"There are people who get uncomfortable with it, and get eye strain or headaches, or on much rarer occasions, a sense of imbalance or nausea, but there's no evidence it can cause permanent harm to your vision or use of both eyes together or anything like that."

That's good news for video game companies. 3D is poised to be one of gaming's next big things -- Sony is pushing internal developers to create PlayStation 3 games with 3D effects, and the Nintendo 3DS handheld was the buzz of the E3 convention earlier this year.

Borchert, who is also a doctor at The Vision Center at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, wasn't so sure about the impact that 3D stereoscopic effects could have on young children, however. Recently Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime recommended that kids under about the age of seven should avoid viewing 3D images.

"...This is the same messaging that the industry is putting out with 3D movies, so it is a standard protocol," he told Kotaku at E3. The upcoming Nintendo 3DS has a slider that lets users turn the 3D effect up, down or completely off.

With young gamers being a large target audience for Nintendo handhelds, any harmful effect of 3D on kids' peepers could have a negative impact on the company. Dr. Borchert explained, "Children are not born with the ability to use both eyes together, they do not have any true binocularity at birth, and they certainly do not have stereoscopic vision." It is possible that 3D could harm developing eye muscles.

But while Borchert admitted that ophthalmologists "don't have an answer" to the negative effects of 3D effect viewing on young children, the expert pegged the appropriate 3D viewing age even lower than Nintendo.

"[Binocularity and stereoscopic vision] is something that is learned in the first few years of life, primarily in about the first three years of life. So it's unlikely that children at that age, where stereoscopic vision is developing most critically, are going to be playing these games."

He said that the move to 3D does raise questions about more accessible 3D stereoscopic effects that are on, for example, the family room television. As 3D tech progresses, glasses-free 3D TV may be inevitable, and very young children are more likely to be exposed to that. It's something that 3D tech developers might eventually need to take into consideration.

But what about crossing your eyes? "From doing that, there's definitely no long-term detrimental damage," Borchert finally confirmed for people everywhere.

"But the effect of 3D on young children, we have no idea. For older children, it's not going to hurt them. I can't imagine how this is going to cause any kind of permanent harm to someone who is over four years of age."

MotorStorm 3D Rift Avialable for PlayStation 3 S3D Gamers Today

Today Sony will be releasing MotorStorm 3D Rift to PSN with a price of $9.99 USD. This is the next stereoscopic 3D game available for the PlayStation 3 gamers that already have a 3D HDTV and are playing still just few of the stereo 3D-capable titles. The game MotorStorm 3D Rift includes 10 tracks from MotorStorm Pacific Rift like Kanaloa Bay or Caldera Ridge, and provides a selection of festival-favorite off-road vehicles including Bikes, Buggies, Racing Trucks, and Monster Trucks. In 3D Rift you’ll have 10 unique events to compete in (one for each track) with the full range of competitor difficulty levels through the races, so you can enjoy the brutal off-road racing at your leisure or take on the toughest and most competitive rivals.

And of course Sony plans to further expand the MotorStorm experience in 3D, but that will happen next year with the release of MotorStorm Apocalypse that is going to be complete game with stereoscopic 3D support unlike the kind of limited implementation that will be available in MotorStorm 3D Rift which is more like a 3D-capable demo of the game MotorStorm Pacific Rift. Anyway, if you already have the PS3 updated to the latest firmware with support for stereoscopic 3D gaming along with a 3D-capable HDTV, then you should go and get MotorStorm 3D Rift.

Sony working on 3D TVs that don't need glasses

TOKYO – Sony Corp. is working on 3-D televisions that don't need special glasses, joining a race with rival Toshiba Corp., but sees cost and technological hurdles to overcome before they can go on sale.

Toshiba said earlier this week it is working on glasses-free 3-D TVs, although no decision had been made on when they will go on sale.

Mainstream 3-D TVs now on sale, such as those from Panasonic Corp. and Sony Corp., require glasses. But there are already screens that don't require glasses, mainly intended for store displays. They require the viewer to stand in specific spots for the 3-D effect to emerge, and the image quality is much lower than that of screens using glasses.

"Seeing 3-D without glasses is more convenient," Sony Senior Vice President Yoshihisa Ishida said Thursday at Tokyo headquarters. "We must take account of pricing before we can think about when to start offering them."

Sony showed its latest 3-D products for the Japanese market, including flat-panel TVs and Blu-ray recorders.

Sony said it plans to be No. 1 in market share in Japan in 3-D TVs and 3-D players and recorders, taking advantage of its position as an electronics maker with a movie studio.

Sony said it will start selling in Japan next month two films and two music videos in 3-D, and planned home software of 3-D theater releases, including a 3-D "Spider-Man" opening in 2012.—AP

Toshiba developing no-glasses 3-D televisions
TOKYO – Japanese electronics maker Toshiba Corp. said Tuesday it is developing technology for a 3-D television that won't require special glasses.

Company spokeswoman Yuko Sugahara confirmed such technology was in the works. But she declined to comment on a report in the Yomiuri newspaper that the Tokyo-based company plans to start selling the new TVs by the end of the year.

Mainstream 3-D TVs now on sale, such as those from rivals Panasonic Corp. and Sony Corp., require glasses. But there are already screens that don't require glasses, mainly intended for store displays. They require the viewer to stand in specific spots for the 3-D effect to emerge, and the image quality is much lower than that of screens using glasses.

Yomiuri said Mitsubishi's technology involves transmitting different images at various angles to create an illusion of dimension and depth, a principle used by current glasses-free monitors.

Electronics companies have been investing heavily in 3-D technology for televisions, betting that people will want a 3-D experience at home following the success of blockbuster movies such as "Avatar," which was screened in 3-D.

Some gadgets such as handheld game machines from Nintendo Co. can deliver 3-D images without special glasses.

"Many people don't like to wear glasses to watch TV for a long time, especially people who must wear 3-D glasses over regular glasses," Sugahara said.—AP

Toshiba unveils 3D Blu-ray player - BDX3100KB

Toshiba has announced its first 3D-enabled Blu-ray player, with the BDX3100KB announced alongside the BDX1100KB.

Toshiba's first Blu-ray player with 3D playback offers what the company describes as an immersive and three-dimensional experience.

"When connected to a 3D TV, the BDX3100KB enables users to enjoy a whole new kind of home cinema, with greater depth of field and enriched colour production," adds Toshiba's release.

Full HD 24p

The BDX3100KB provides Full HD 1920x1080p 3D output with Blu-ray movies played back at 24 frames per second.

"A 3D-capable HDMI port allows output of 3D content from Blu-ray 3D discs to a 3D capable TV set, allowing users to enjoy a fully immersive home cinema experience," adds Tosh.

The less featured BDX1100KB offers 1080p upscaling, 1024p/24p playback, BD-Live and Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD - like its more expensive brother - but does not have 3D capability.

The BDX3100KB and BDX1100KB from Toshiba have been given a UK release date of October 2010, with prices yet to be announced.

Hands on: Sharp Aquos Quattron 3D review

Sharp chose IFA 2010 to anounce its contribution to a burgeoning 3D TV market, the Sharp Aquaos Quattron 3D.

Sharp has taken its time with its 3D offering. Instead of jumping feet first into the third dimension, it pushed out its Quattron technology while everyone else was showing of their 3D wares.

This was a good thing, as Quattron may well hold the key to brighter, better three-dimensional images.

TechRadar was given a demo of the TV, which showed how four colours 3D compares to three colours. And the results were noticeable. Colours sparkled that little bit more and this seemed to enhance the effect of the 3D.

Essentially the fourth colour in Quattron pimps out the yellow in an image and we have to admit most of the demo we saw was based around the colour yellow, which does mean that what we were shown favoured Sharp's TV technology.

Saying that, we have seen a mountain of 3D and this is definitely near the top of the pile when it comes to quality stakes.

To stop judder, Sharp has managed to squeeze in 400hz into the TV which should bring a smoother picture. Unfortunately, there was a few niggles with the demo and judder was apparent. This was to do with the 3D signal rather than the TV itself, however.

At 60-inches the Quattron is optimum size for 3D. While the likes of Panasonic seem to be bigging up smaller sets for 3D – it announced a 42-inch plasma – 60 inches gives you enough screen to immerse yourself in the image.

When it comes to glasses, you get one pair in the setup which we can't help thinking is a touch stingy, considering that it will cost you £100 for another pair.

But the glasses do hold a nice bit of tech that seems lacking on any other TV. If your friends are watching a 3D movie and you don't want to see it in 3D, then what you can do is press a button and view the content in 2D through the glasses. It is a simple but great idea.

While an extra pair of glasses will cost extra, at least the 3D is in-built in the TV, so you don't have to mess around getting external sensors to enjoy 3D content.

At £3,500 the Sharp Quattron 3D is an expensive buy – but with 3D this good, it would definitely be a worthy investment.

The 60-inch Sharp Quattron 3D TV has a UK release date of October 2010.

Hands on: Toshiba Satellite A665 3D laptop review

If 3D is going to take off in the UK, then it will the games industry which pioneers the technology in the home.

There's simple logic to it: if you are happy to play a fake guitar, sing into a fake microphone and wield a controller like it's a tennis bat, then it is more than likely you won't mind putting on a pair of plastic specs to play a game.

Toshiba's foray into 3D gaming is with the Satellite A665 3D laptop. The Satellite A665 comes bundled with a pair of Nvidia 3D Vision active shutter glasses, which means you can have out-of-the-box 3D playback.

Nvidia has been pushing the merits of 3D gaming for a good while now, so this means there are a number of games on the market that utilise 3D. We had a go at Prince of Persia and there was a certain amount of immersion you got that is missing from the game when played in 2D.

. . . This will be a big draw for those looking to bring Blu-ray 3D into their home. The supplied HDMI connection means this will double as a 3D Blu-ray player. As long as you have a compatible 3D TV, then you are all ready.

When it comes to other connectivity, the A665 houses 3 x USB 2.0, 1x eSATA / USB combo port with Sleep-and-Charge and a Multi-Card Reader.

Sony VPL-VW90ES 3D Projector for the Home Announced, Due in November

No surprise here that Sony’s pushing even more pieces of technology with 3D somewhere in the equation. This time around, though, it’s not meant for somewhere like your office, but entirely for your home. While their 3D HDTVs may not be taking off as well as they’d like, perhaps due to their price, that’s not going to stop them from giving consumers out there plenty of options to choose from when it comes to full 1080p HD 3D viewing.

The VPL-VW90ES 3D projector is meant entirely for your living room, as Sony Professional is aiming it for the home theater enthusiast. And, by enthusiast, that may be an understatement. Featuring a dynamic contrast ratio of 150,000:1, you should be happy enough with the crisp images displayed on your . . . Wall. Sony’s also shoved their proprietary Advanced Iris 3 technology into the package. It will also utilize the same active glasses technology that Sony uses in their BRAVIA HDTV line-up.

Sony hopes that with the projector, and the technology empowering the 3D technology therein, you’ll be offered up the most comfortable and “natural” experience. Apparently they’re hoping you’ll watch it more than once. The projector can also do 2D to 3D conversion. As for a release date? Well, Sony’s tagged November 2010 for that, but only in the UK. No word on an international release, either. As for the price, well, that will be a cold £6,000.

Warner Announces Six Blu-ray 3D Titles for Retail

On Nov. 16 Warner Home Video will release six 3D Blu-ray Disc titles at retail with no hardware tie-ins, including Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore, the industry’s first day-and-date 3D Blu-ray release with DVD and standard Blu-ray.

Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore, which took in more than $47 million at the domestic box office, will be a three-SKU release, with 3D Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray and DVD. Per 3D Blu-ray standards, all of the 3D Blu-ray releases will include 2D versions of the films.

The other films to see a 3D Blu-ray release will be Clash of the Titans (2010), The Polar Express, IMAX Deep Sea 3D, IMAX Under the Sea 3D and IMAX Space Station 3D. All six 3D titles will have an SRP of $44.95 each.

The 3D Blu-rays of IMAX Deep Sea 3D and IMAX Under the Sea 3D had previously been exclusives to owners of 3D products from Sony Electronics and LG Electronics, respectively. The 3D Blu-ray of IMAX Space Station 3D was initially an LG 3D hardware tie-in for consumers in Europe, Asia, South America and Central America.

The 3D Blu-rays of Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore and Clash of the Titans will be released as combo packs, with DVDs and digital copies included. Previously released in anaglyph 3D, The Polar Express has been upgraded to deliver a stereoscopic, 1080p 3D picture.

“This is an exciting time in the industry and we are thrilled to be a part of this evolution in home entertainment,” said Dorinda Marticorena, SVP of worldwide marketing and high-def. “As sales of Blu-ray 3D hardware increase during the holidays, we wanted to ensure that consumers have access to a diverse selection of 3D content, not attached to an exclusive bundle, which will showcase the amazing possibilities of this brilliant new format – and this is just the beginning.

“Consumers can expect to see more 3D movies and games coming to home 3D over the next few months.”

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Monster House (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) are currently the only two titles currently available widely at retail, while Image Entertainment has announced three 3D Blu-ray releases for Nov. 2 (IMAX: Grand Canyon Adventure - River at Risk, IMAX: Wild Ocean and Dinosaurs Alive!).

The 3D Blu-ray of Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore will include a new Looney Tunes animated short called “Coyote Falls,” presented in 3D. Warner has not announced other bonus features for the release.

The 3D Vision Live (Beta) Portal is Now Streaming 3D with Silverlight

Nvidia has launched its 3D Vision Live portal in Beta as it is modern nowadays with the portal streaming online stereoscopic 3D videos using Microsoft’s Silverlight for owners of 3D Vision equipped desktop or mobile computers. The portal already has about 20 video clips available in 3D for watching online and the list will probably continue to be expanded, so you should go and take a look, although you’ve probably seen some of the videos already featured here on the blog for download. There is even a 3D trailer for the Resident Evil Afterlife movie, so head on to take a look.

Optoma Unveils 3D Adapter For 720p Projectors

Atlanta - Optoma Technology is unveiling at CEDIA Expo, here, Thursday, what it is calling a "breakthrough" 3D adapter.

Optoma Technology has introduced an adapter ($399 suggested retail) that will enable 720p projectors with 120Hz refresh rates and HDMI v1.3 input to play 3D images from sources complying with the 3D Blu-ray spec.

The adapter will enable legacy 720p DLP video projectors with HDMI 1.3 inputs to play 3D images from new 3D 1080p signal sources complying with the 3D Blu-ray spec.

Model 3D-XL ($399 suggested retail) is billed as the first converter box that lets 720p 3D DLP projectors play 1080p 3D Blu-ray discs.

As with all single projector 3D systems, active 3D glasses are required to view images in 3D.

"The 3D-XL is an important product for the market right now," stated Jon Grodem, Optoma product marketing senior director.  "It gives a large installed base a way to embrace 3D life without having to make a new, expensive investment."

The 3D-XL accepts the HDMI 1.4a signal output by 1080p 3D players and down converts it to an HDMI 1.3 signal that current 720p 3D DLP projectors - those that operate at 120Hz refresh rates. - can display in 3D.

The 3D-XL supports multiple 3D inputs, with two HDMI 1.4a inputs, 1 USB port and 1 RS232 port, and can accept common global video inputs and video formats up to 1080p (HDTV, EDTV, SDTV, NTSC, PAL, SECAM).

The 3D-XL weighs 2.4 pounds and comes with a one-year parts and labor warranty.

Sony's PlayMemories app brings 3D photos to your PlayStation 3

This wasn't mentioned among the other 3D-related PS3 announcements Sony made during its Tokyo Game Show press conference last week, but it looks like the company has another little bonus in store for those that just can't get enough 3D. It's just announced a new PlayMemories application that will be available as a free download in "late September," and will let you view both 2D and 3D photos captured with a 3D-compatible camera (including Sony's NEX-5/NEX-3, WX5 and TX9). No peek at the app itself just yet, unfortunately, but we're guessing it'll be available any day now -- it is technically late September, after all.

Sharp adds two 3D Blu-ray players to its lineup

What self respecting consumer electronics manufacturer doesn't offer a 3D Blu-ray player? None we can think of. So obviously it was only a matter of time before Sharp joined in. The BD-HP80U and BD-HP90U will both be available in September and offer a slew of streaming features like DivX, AVCHD, Netflix, Pandora and VUDU, in addition to their 3D Blu-ray playback abilities. Both are wall-mountable using VESA-standard mounts, but the BD-HP90U brings more -- it can operate horizontally or vertically with its included stand and adds RS232. Look for them on store shelves for $429 and $499 respectively.

Sharp prepares XV-Z17000 3D DLP projector for 2011 release

Sharp just announced its first 3D projector, the XV-Z17000, at CEDIA. Due early next year, the company is holding back pricing information until CES but wasn't shy about mentioning mentioning it works with active shutter glasses using either DLP Link or IR syncing technology by bouncing an IR signal off the screen the picture is projected onto. It packs two HDMI 1.4a inputs and specs include a measured 30,000:1 contrast ratio and 1,600 ANSI lumens brightness. Check the press release after the break for the rest of the details currently available, we'll be taking another careful look at this one in January.

Mitsubishi America offers up two new 3D projectors

The first new projector for the US is the HC4000 (pictured) which is touted as a great price for the performance DIY HT projector and features the 1080p DarkChip 3 DLP light engine. It is capable of 1300 lumens and provides up to 750:1 ANSI contrast ratio. It has support for an optional anamorphic lens for those 2.35:1 movies and is rated at a very quiet 25dBA in low mode. The estimated price is $1495 and should be available immediately. The bigger brother is the Diamond 3D which evidently has no price, but does use the 120hz Sony SXRD light engine, has an auto-iris function for easy setup, only musters 19dBa of noise while it is running and features two HDMI 1.4 inputs and an RS232 port for control.

JVC 3D Projector Offers Advanced Calibration

JVC has launched three 3D-ready projectors which claim to provide users with a wide range of calibration options.

According to JVC, the DLA-X7 and the DLA-X9 have been designed to achieve THX certification and are in the process of being tested by THX.

These projectors have also been designed for ISF certification and will include an ISF C3 mode for professional calibration and 99 screen correction modes. Together with a 7 Axis Colour Management System, these new models allow a wide range of calibration for users.

The company also claims that its new projectors (DLA-X3, DLA-X7 and DLA-X9) have a new cabinet design with centre mounted lens, symmetrical shape and rear input terminals for versatile positioning and mounting options.

The new flagship projector, the DLA-X9, is built using hand-selected, hand-tested components and claims to achieve an incredible 100,000:1 native contrast ratio. The DLA-X7 offers a 70,000:1 native contrast ratio, while the DLA-X3 offers a 50,000:1 native contrast ratio.

All three models are compatible with JVC's PK-AG1 Active Shutter 3D Glasses and PK-EM1 3D Signal Emitter (both sold separately) for 3D presentations.

The JVC DLA-X3, DLA-X7, DLA-X9, JVC's PK-AG1 3D glasses and PK-EM1 3D Signal Emitter will all be available from authorised JVC retailers in late November 2010.

Konami's Road Fighters 3D hits Japan's arcades

We know it's tough to deal with the sorry state of arcades these days, but they're still thriving in Japan, and Konami has just announced one more reason to be jealous in the form of Road Fighters 3D. As you can see, that's actual 3D complete with 3D glasses, although the game can apparently also be played in 2D if you're not quite ready to experience "one of the most thrilling arcade racing experiences on the planet." Keeping up with other modern arcade machines, the game also has an online multiplayer mode, and it incorporates Konami's PASELI digital cash system so you don't have to worry about having enough change. Look for it to hit arcades in Japan by the end of the month.

Sony's giant outdoor 3D LED display

CHIBA, Japan--This behemoth of a 3D display measures 71 feet by 16 feet. And that's just a fraction of how big it could be.

Sony attracted the masses--who were promptly handed 3D glasses--to its 3D LED Display.

Sony is using its HD 3D LED Display System as the centerpiece of its booth here at Ceatec 2010. This isn't the first public display--it made an appearance at IFA Berlin last month and was used to broadcast the World Cup match between Japan and the Netherlands in June. But for all the 3D gadgets on display here at Ceatec (and there are a ton), Sony's stands out. Mostly for its extreme size.

At 1,136 square feet it's not meant to be something you bring home for the kids. But as a backdrop at a concert? Or for large-scale outdoor events, like football games? That's exactly what Sony has in mind, though it's not for sale yet.

The one shown here is made up of 345 tiles, and each tile is made up of 9 square display modules. Each is about half a foot thick. Because it's just a matter of linking together the modules, there's really no limit on how large the display can be.

When put together in the dimensions noted above, the display's viewing angle is 120 degrees, better than most movie theaters. The contrast ratio is 1,000 to 1, and like many of the best outdoor displays, its brightness measures 2,000 nits.

It's also unexpectedly portable. Sony takes it apart, module by module, every time it has to be moved. At this size it takes three or four hours to put back together. When built to twice the height, as for the World Cup game, the job can take up to 10 hours.

Call of Duty: Black Ops With 3D Support for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360

Some good news coming for everyone that is eagerly anticipating the release of the game Call of Duty: Black Ops as apparently the game will be 3D Vision-ready, but it will also have support for stereoscopic 3D gaming mode available in the versions of the game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles. The game is scheduled for an official release after a little more than a month, on November 9th, so the wait for the game is almost over and the built-in stereoscopic 3D support not only for PC gamers, but also for console gamers is also a big plus…

“Development of stereoscopic 3D began as an R&D project, but once we saw what the technology brought to the Call of Duty experience, what a great fit and how immersive it was, we knew that we had to develop it for Black Ops,” says Mark Lamia, Studio Head of Treyarch. “The high-octane action and diverse locations you experience in Black Ops are perfect settings for an incredible 3D experience.”

Of course the game being certified as 3D Vision-ready means that you will have to have a desktop or mobile computer that is equipped with 3D Vision active shutter glasses and a 3D-monitor. But for the console gamers there are a few more specific things that need to be met in order for them to be able to enjoy the game in its full stereoscopic 3D glory. For example the Xbox 360 users will be lucky only if their console has an HDMI connector for video output and will need to set the resolution to 720p, not to forget the need of a television that supports a “side by side” 3D mode (no support for the old 3D DLP TVs and the checkerboard pattern they use for 3D). And for PlayStation 3 users a television that supports a “top-bottom” or “over-under” 3D mode is required and will as well be limited to 720p resolution as expected. The game will not be supporting officially any anaglyph or another 3D mode than these, although you might be able to try it with anaglyph mode on the PC using the 3D Vision Discover mode built-in the 3D Vision drivers. Of course using the iZ3D and/or DDD’s TriDef drivers you should be able to make it work on other 3D-capable hardware, but the 3D experience might not be the best… of course that is yet to be tested after the game becomes available.

The Optoma 3D DLP Projector Adapter 3D-XL is Coming in January

It seems that Optoma is almost ready to to release the much hyped 3D DLP Projector Adapter 3D-XL that will add support for HDMI 1.4a input for stereo 3D content to 14 of the company’s 3D-capable DLP projectors as well as 3D DLP projectors from other brands. Optoma has officially announced more details about the adapter as well that the 3D-XL projector adapter will be available in January 2011 and although the official price is not yet announced, Amazon has already listed the 3D-XL adapter for pre-order with a price of $499 USD. It certainly won’t come cheap, but in the price there will be one pair of Optoma’s BG-ZD101 3D active shutter glasses sold for $99 USD and based on the DLP Link technology. And if you compare the price of a 3D DLP projector plus the 3D-XL adapter to a 3D HDTV or some of the high-end 3D-capable projectors that were already announced to feature HDMI 1.4(a) S3D support, you might still be saving quite a lot of money. . . .

Consumer Reports: Plasma TV's Better For 3D

For the first time, Consumer Reports has rated 3D TV's, and concluded that plasma TV's are better than LCDs for displaying the technology, primarily because there is less ghosting.

Consumer Reports tested 14 models and found that the same things that affected standard picture quality also affected 3D, including the aforementioned ghosting, as well as black level, brightness, and viewing angle.

"It remains to be seen whether 3D TV is just a novelty or a new product category in the consumer electronics space," said Paul Reynolds, electronics editor for Consumer Reports. "But, our tests show that there are some fine 3D TV sets out there for those consumers eager for a new experience."

Novelty or the next big thing, CR is enthusiastic about the technology. Following its six-month evaluation, CR said: "[W]e can tell you 3D TV is the real deal--realistic, compelling and exciting."

DEG Counts 24 3D Blu-ray Titles Available at Retail by the End of the Year

With 10 3D Blu-ray Discs debuting Nov. 16 — 10 days before Black Friday — and heavy retailer support for 3D consumer electronics, DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group is hoping for big things for the 3D category this holiday season.

The DEG counts 24 3D Blu-ray titles announced for retail by the end of the year, a figure that doesn’t count exclusives tied to certain 3D hardware or retailers. Nearly a dozen distributors have released or announced 3D Blu-ray titles.

“We are excited to see so much industry support for bringing Blu-ray 3D home,” said Ron Sanders, president of Warner Home Video and DEG. “And now, consumers buying 3D home entertainment systems over Black Friday weekend will have ample 3D programming to accompany them.”

The Blu-ray Disc Association reports that nearly 25% of standalone Blu-ray players sold in the United States are 3D capable, and the DEG estimates along with 25 upcoming 3D video games, there will be more than 1,000 hours of 3D broadcast programming available in the next 12 months.

More About the Viewsonic V3D241wm-LED 3D-capable LCD Monitor

We’ve head about the Viewsonic V3D241wm-LED 3D-capable LCD monitor back at the beginning of this year when there was information that Viewsonic is working on a 120Hz gaming LCD with a LED backlight that was supposed to come as a 3D Vision certified product. However that monitor has been delayed quite a lot and just recently there was the official announcement as a solution supporting AMD’s HD3D Technology. So far that is pretty much the only 120Hz 3D-capable LCD monitor that was announced as compatible with it and it is hardly available on any markets. What is interesting is the fact that the monitor comes bundled with a pair of wired, yes I’ve said wired, shutter glasses that you need to use to get the 3D effect and apparently it uses the iZ3D Driver. According to iZ3D’s website you will be able to use that monitor not only with the latest Radeon HD 5000 and 6000 series of GPUs, but also with 4000 series of ATI/AMD-based graphic cards as well as with Nvidia GPUs, although with the Radeon 4000 series and Nvidia 4xx/2xx series you might have some sync issues.
