Panasonic 42V20 Review
« on: Jul 01, 2010 at 12:10 PM »
I pre-ordered a Panasonic 42V20 FULL HD Neo-PDP panel unit, to hopefully replace the G11.

If you guys remember my G11 review, I said that it was and it still is the best plasma I've seen...The V20 promises to run pass the slider with the following new features:

-5,000,000 to 1 contrast ratio
-Improved 24p playback (hopefully it resolves the flicker)
-Improved IFC via the much talked about "Cinema mode"

The unit arrives early next week, and I'll go for a written and a video review. Let's see if the V20 is all what it's hyped up to be ;)

Carlo, its not a NEO PDP. Its a FULL BLACK panel - single glass layered.   ;)

That's right. The Panasonic Phil. also claims that TH-P42V20 is a Neo Plasma.

We are expecting this TV to be available by middle of July. The price will be cash at P69K. Will announce its availability as soon as we have the stocks.

So you want to buy a V20 with 2009 tech?  hehehe.  The panel techs are different, hence Panasonic was able to magically increase the contrast ratio that much.

Ok simple test nalang, once you open your V20, try the torchlight test. If you see only 1 light reflection, then that is a 2010 Full Black plasma.  If you see 2 reflections, then you'd better make a claim.    ;)  Check mo yung G11 mo right now, it should have 2 reflections.

Anyway, its just naming/marketing of course. Im sure your V20 will be single layer glass.  CONGRATS!!!!

Actually, that price level for a 42V20 is even lower than prevailing Tokyo prices.  Bili ka ng dalawa Carlo...hehehe

Mukhang mapapabili rin ako ng isa pa for Manila...hehehe

I don't know if this is really reasonable cause the 'grey' unit is still not available. I always see the Panasonic Phil. TVs to be pricey, though their TVs are warranty across the country. We still need to see the price of 'grey' unit to weigh its price against the local distributed one before we can truly convince the price 'reasonableness'.  :D

Maybe it's time to upgrade from pv80, 5M contrast ratio will definitely make extra "wow" sa pq.

Just keep us posted sir sa retail price.

Salamat mga tsip!

Sa akin lang, if the V20 is just as good as the G11, panalo na! It does not even have to beat the G11 simply bec:

1.Lower ang price

and

2.Does not need a digibox to get the channels tuned!

I'm excited ;)

Also:

Sorry for not answering PM's regularly since April, bec medyo naging busy po tayo :)

Free na uli ngayon.

Panasonic V20 (TX-P50V20B) Review

The final jigsaw piece in Panasonic’s high end plasma line up has arrived for review at AVForums. The V20 Plasma sits just under the flagship VT20 3D TV and above the G20 in this year’s range. So what are the differences between the models now we finally have the V20 available and is it just a VT20 with the 3D stripped out? All those questions and more are about to be answered.

The Panasonic V20 plasma has lived up to its made for movies marketing by producing some of the best images we have seen this year on any TV. If you want this picture quality and 3D together then you should certainly look at the VT20, which we reviewed last month, but if it’s just the best quality TV and film playback you want - with the deepest black levels ever seen on a Panasonic plasma, this is the TV for you.

It has its little issues here and there, which I have mentioned in the review above, and, of course, we are still not sure exactly what the effects of any black level rise will have on the 2010 screens. However, with all that said, the V20 equals its big brother in the 2D TV picture stakes and only narrowly misses out on pipping our reference Kuro screen.

If you want deep blacks, accurate colours and excellent motion resolution then the V20 offers these things in spades. It’s one of the best TVs currently available for accurate picture quality and comes highly recommended.

Boss Carlo, please check the 42V20 for the "floating blacks" issue.

It's reportedly been observed on the G20 and V20 models.

Thanks!

=================================

Sample posts from avforums (UK) :

Watched the Descent 2 last night and it had floating blacks big time, obviously due to the nature of the film it is very demanding. I challenge those of you that say you haven't noticed floating blacks to watch it and tell me you have no problems.

By the way I'm still extremely happy with my V20 and wouldn't change it due to 1 minor flaw that is very infrequent on most content.

http://www.avforums.com/forums/plasma-tvs/1267462-panasonic-v20-info-reviews-owners-thread-part-2-a-21.html

I have tested various Panasonic models this week for floating blacks. I have already replicated it on 4 V20's using The Dark Knight on bluray, now to add to the list...
TXP-50G20 Serial FE0350679
TXP-42G20 Serial FB0310200
TXP-42S20 Serial FH0332793
TXP-42V20 Serial FA0330522

All tested with the same opening scene on the Dark Knight bluray. All exhibited the fault identically.

As mentioned the only way to avoid this nasty problem is to kill the blacks and increase brightness by 5 or 6 clicks. This worked with all of the above sets.

http://www.avforums.com/forums/plasma-tvs/1251111-panasonic-g20-floating-blacks-contrast-problem-4.html

I didn't notice the floating blacks on the G20 in the beginning, but they're bothering me so much now...

http://www.avforums.com/forums/plasma-tvs/1223803-panasonic-v20-info-reviews-owners-thread-20.html

From dtvforum (Australia):

One issue is the floating blacks are noticeable when watching in complete darkness, but apart from this issue I have not found anything else to complain about.

Panasonic V20 (TX-P50V20B) Review

The avforums reviewer noticed it:

The last area to check is for an artefact called ‘Floating Blacks’. This is where the black levels (usually the bands on a 2.35:1 film) seem to change intensity and look like there is light behind the blacks. I can report that I noticed this on one film and only when I went looking for it: it was very minor.

Ive been using the V20 since 31 Mar and I personally have not noticed that floating black thingy.  Im a big fan of  black bars and never fills up the screen even during the first 100 hours or so.  The black bars remain uniform as far as I could tell.  Either my eyes are defective, or my living room is too bright, or my TV is "abnormally functioning well".  Hehehe

Anyways, regarding those posts about the mid line of the World Cup what I notice is, if the camera pans fast, such as when the goalie kicks the ball long, there are some ms (milliseconds) when the straight mid line would blur.  Whether such blurrying is caused by the V20 lagging on the fast panning, or, the HD broadcast cam hunting on its focus (because the green field on the background is practically monotonous) - Im not sure.   I dont see double lines or triple lines or shadowing - I see a very very short period of blurrying if I stare at the line.  Doesnt bother me at all because my attention is on the ball and the players running across the field, which never gets out of focus (well they are too small compared to the center line of course).  Makes me wonder how the image would look if the playing field is full of huge parallel lines such as that of American Football.

Hopefully, Id get the chance to see how that WC center line looks on a fast response high end LED LCD.
