@barrister

Good info tsip!

I'll look for it, buti lalang may Dark Knight Blu-Ray tayo to test it...

"Light behind the blacks"...Is there a better way to describe it kaya idol? Para mabilis natin makita?

Thanks.

I wouldn't know how it looks like, since I haven't seen it in person before.

But the way I understand it, "floating blacks" refers to a software error that produces a contrast fluctuation, which causes black levels to look like they're "flickering" or "pulsing" from black to gray and back again.

There used to be a similar problem on Hitachi plasmas circa 2006.  It was referred to on the forums as "flicker" at first, then forumers started calling it "contrast fluctuation".

Here's our Hitachi discussion in 2007: http://www.pinoydvd.com/index.php/topic,57228.msg672688.html#msg672688

These days, the commonly-used term is "floating blacks".  Going by forum discussions, it could be that all of the Panny 2010 plasmas are affected, although I haven't heard of any reports about the VT20 models.

The consolation is that the problem seems to be a slight one, which may or may not appear, depending on the source material being played.

Those posters who imply that the contrast fluctuation is severe might be exaggerating their reports.

=================================

Here's my theory:

Due to the numerous complaints about the abruptly rising black levels on the 2009 models, they revised the firmware for the 2010 models so as to make the black level increases less abrupt, and consequently less noticeable.

The firmware change did make the black level increases more gradual.  However, the side-effect is that they also had to include a firmware feature that automatically: (a) increases black levels when on-screen contrast increases, and (b) decreases black levels when on-screen contrast decreases.

This automatic contrast-shifting becomes observable as the "fluctuating blacks" phenomenon.

I saw this 42V20 in the flesh earlier at Anson's Trinoma...ganda ng aesthetics ng TV! Parang feeling namin ni misis, it's bigger than a 42"...hehe...In terms of PQ, they had a trailer of Land of the Lost (unfortunately) in HD...all we can say was wow (based on our untrained eyes)...colors were warm (lalo na yun logo ng "Today", sa intro), Will Farrell's face seemed "natural" and the blacks were for me, very good -- compared sa katabi nyang C10...i haven't noticed the "IFC" though because I couldn't navigate the remote...

Looking forward to the review of Sir Carlo :)

"Regardless of cost, the Panasonic TX-P42V20B is one of the best HDTVs on sale today, and indeed, one of the best Panasonic has ever produced."

http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/panasonic-tx-p42v20b-tx-p42v20-20100624748.htm

One thing I noticed (which has been confirmed with the review above) is its ability to still deliver beautiful image despite an increased light condition environment. (This was the case at the display in Anson's trinoma)

I think the cost has just been satisfied...hopefully the grey market one is cheaper :)

I wonder if this is as good as the pdp kuro's and how close does it compare to the krp ones?

No its still NOT even though its definitely blacker than any previous Panasonics - very very obvious.  However, Panasonic is definitely getting there - in terms of Kuro heat too.   And maybe I just dont know how to manually tweak RGB drive and RGB cut-off and other manual image tweaks which are all accessible from the main menu.  Just happy to cycle between Cinema, Living and default User settings with no adjustments/calibrations at all.

Best of all, you can actually watch on a V20 in a BRIGHT living room which would suck big time on a Kuro.  The image is bright and the reflection is low.

Anyway, who still cares about Kuro at this level of price, image quality, power consumption, the features, not to mention the looks.    The base alone is more beautifully finished than the bezel of most other models...hehehe

Mababa.  Nag-a-adjust ang power consumption ko sa kaka-DL ng 24/7 and not at all due to the V2/V20.

50V20:  208 kWh/YEAR
42V20:  160 kWH/YEAR

if you watch 4.5 hours a day.  Just do the math if you watch longer.   Take note, last year's 42G11 consumed 200 kWh/year while 50G11 was rated 260kWH/year.  Kitang kita reduction ng power consumption.  No need to consider V10 ratings because it was not sold in Manila.

No calibration, notice the room lighting - that room is actually brighter in reality but looks subdued due to fast shutter speed.

Look at the complexion - they dont look like dolls as in the case of LCD.

Is the V20's pricing/features good enough to reconsider getting the low-end cheap A2S and C10?

Im still surprised that you can get a 42V20 for 69K in Manila.  I wonder why they're not bringing the G20 there too para meron pang option before the S and the X models.

I dont think you can find a better TV for 69K at the moment.  So if the budget permits...

For those who like watching in the dark and far away enough, the entry models should suffice.

Hi sir, I am not one of the JEDI's here, so pardon me for my opinion. I think (together with my wife), that comparing side by side with the C10, the PQ is so much greater in terms of performance. Colors and especially black superiority was very obvious. For the first time, as well, I was able to appreciate a plasma television amidst the bright lighting condition at Anson's Trinoma condition. (Hopefully, the sales agent was also equipped with the knowledge because people were just passing by the TV). It is being sold there at around 84k.

Considering also the "70 watt" increase from the C10, Panasonic really knows what their doing--in a very much efficient way.

I think in terms of PQ superiority of this TV over the C10 and A2, and with sir Vic's price tag of 69k, it's very much worth it :) (hopefully, it will e cheaper in December)

@Clondalkin

Nice pics!

@Rest...

The unit should arrive the house early next week, and for comparison purposes I'll pit the V20 against the following models:

1)PV80/PY800
2)C10/G11
3)Samsung A650 and Sony X450 LCD units

There we go ;)

69.5K daw sa Ansons Makati - cash or CC straight payment...GO!!!  hehehe

Yasmin are you still waiting for reviews?  Just see for yourself right now...hehehe.   Bring a penlight.

Paki silip na rin kung Made In Japan din ang V20 Asia.  It should be dahil yung prime techs are still done in their factory in Osaka.

Sa Japan meron sticker ng Made In Japan sa tag.  Tapos meron din Made In Japan indication sa box and of course sa likod.  Pero baka sa Japanese market lang sila pure made in japan pa rin.

Kung assembled in Singapore ang V20 Asia, well, it's ok pa rin because for sure, the panel just came out from Osaka.  Could be assembled in Singapore because other parts such as digital tuner are not the same as the tuners in Japan.  And also yung ugali ng Japanese makers to strip down the overseas models  - take out some of the bling blings that are only relevant in Japan to reduce cost.  It's OK in the end.  but I told my wife that I should see the Asia V20 unit for myself to spot the diffrerences with the V2 Japan.

Per Vic of Sights and Sounds, it should be this week or early next week. The units he'll have are Panasonic Philippine units ;)

Sir Vic/Sir Carlo/JEDIs,

Is it possible that the V20 units that we have are stripped-down units in terms of features that's why it's price is kinda "surprising"? Sorry to ask..I have been reading a lot from different forums about the V20s features however, some of these are not present (e.g. THX, Intelligent Frame Creation)...hopefully, it's not...

The "Asian" unit has the IFC with the "True Cinema" settings, no THX though...

For confirmation pa boss.

Really?  We dont get that in Japan but its OK - USB wifi has become very reasonably priced.

Pls check if the Asian Version is equipped with optical audio out - very convenient for those not happy with the built-in sound system of the V2/V20.   However, V2 definitely has got a fuller bass than previous year's model (lesson learned), although still not as powerful as that of PZ800 (2008).

Maybe a Japanese novelty but since 2008, Japanese high end models have module for wireless CCTV camera interface.   Pra kita mo raw whats happening sa garage or inside Baby's room while watching something sleazy -  Anybody needs that?  ;D
