"Light behind the blacks"...Is there a better way to describe it kaya idol? Para mabilis natin makita?
Thanks.
I wouldn't know how it looks like, since I haven't seen it in person before.
But the way I understand it, "floating blacks" refers to a software error that produces a
contrast fluctuation, which causes black levels to look like they're "flickering" or "pulsing" from black to gray and back again.
There used to be a similar problem on Hitachi plasmas circa 2006. It was referred to on the forums as "
flicker" at first, then forumers started calling it "
contrast fluctuation".
Here's our Hitachi discussion in 2007:
http://www.pinoydvd.com/index.php/topic,57228.msg672688.html#msg672688These days, the commonly-used term is "floating blacks". Going by forum discussions, it could be that all of the Panny 2010 plasmas are affected, although I haven't heard of any reports about the VT20 models.
The consolation is that the problem seems to be a slight one, which may or may not appear, depending on the source material being played.
Those posters who imply that the contrast fluctuation is severe might be exaggerating their reports.
=================================
Here's my theory:
Due to the numerous complaints about the abruptly rising black levels on the 2009 models, they revised the firmware for the 2010 models so as to make the black level increases less abrupt, and consequently less noticeable.
The firmware change did make the black level increases more gradual. However, the side-effect is that they also had to include a firmware feature that automatically: (a) increases black levels when on-screen contrast increases, and (b) decreases black levels when on-screen contrast decreases.
This automatic contrast-shifting becomes observable as the "fluctuating blacks" phenomenon.
