dvd or blu ray?
« on: Nov 04, 2010 at 12:20 PM »
Guys im pretty new here in pinoydvd. First off all I'd like to say im pretty impressed with the site since I myself am a big fan of movies. Anyway, I've decided to start a new hobby which is collect dvds. My only problem is we've reached a point wherein HD is starting to become really popular. Now my question would be is it still worth it to start a dvd collection or should i go hd and get blu rays? Blu rays are still quite expensive for me and I have no problem with dvd if dvd will continue to stay in the market unless they decide to eventually get rid of them including the dvd compatibility in blu ray players. What do you guys think? thanks a lot.

Since bluray drives can read DVDs, DVD are not going the way of the dodo anytime soon. If you can afford it and willing to spend quite a sum ( this is a very expensive hobby), bluray Is the way to go. The extra details of bluray are such that once you get accustomed to the finer details, it's hard to look at DVDs. But you might want to buy DVDs for those lesser titles, since DVDs cost a fraction of bluray, especially on locally available catalogue titles.

That said, but aware that go into this hobby only if you have money to spare because eventually even bluray will be superseded by newer technologies, look at beta, VHS, laserdiscs (or lp, cassettes,CDs).  So your collection will decrease in value over time.

Then if you get into it, make the most of it - enjoy the movies. Only then would you recoup your investment.

Welcome to Pinoydvd!

Definitely you will invest a lot on BD.
If you feel that you can collect both.
My advise
Get movies in DVDs that you feel is not really that collectible.
Get BD movies that are truely worth it.

As tech dude mentioned, value will not increase in time.
To Boldly go where no Bluray has gone before.

well for me both are worth it, naman, just an impact sa wallet & desire to satisfy once happiness w/c comes as a hobby... think the joy other you'll bring, group movie watching with friends horror or suspense and lastly the impression that you pass on to your kids or next watchers, who knows... guinness might buy your rare collection after long long x100 time for museum purpose, hehehe...

Bluray. Although its still expensive, the resolution and contents are far better superior than the DVD's.

Kapag ang DVD collection ko umabot ng 50 titles, I'm going to shift to Blu-ray.

Honestly, if not for BD merchants here in PDVD I would probably have stuck to DVD's and NMT's.

Masyado talaga kasing mahal dito sa Pilipinas at bitin yung mga pagpipilian.  Mabuti rin at merong nmt option.

For classics and movies I love that I can watch again = BD

For movies that are not worth collecting = DVD will do

Besides, the newer BD players and HDTV Panels can upscale DVDs better now.  I've seen some demos and I thought it was BD only to find out that it's just a DVD spinning,

I started collecting VCDs then when DVDs became affordable, i shifted slowly to DVDs. Now that BDs are slowly (and oh so slow) becoming affordable, I started shifting some of my collectible movies to the BD format.

I guess as technology become affordable, makes sense to avail of the offering and "upgrade" one's collection.

i used to collect vcd before then shifted to dvd. When the BD came out, i tried and was impressed with it considering the sharper picture, among others, that bd's offer. it's kinda pricey thought. I'm sure in the near future, bd's price will go down too.

Go for Bluray.

For local titles go for DVD saka siguro cartoons/anime.
