thanks sir.  i have been remiss in marketing the SVS speakers, i was too content on walk-ins who already wanted the speakers even before they heard them.

A short listening session with SVS S-Series SCS-01 speakers:

An opportunity in visiting MikeC in Graceland, is something that I wouldnt pass up. Even amidst the stories of that 'magic water' that he loves to offer to visitors, didnt scare me one bit ;D .........besides, I only got tupayb in my wallet anyway :D
I wanted to hear his SVS speakers right away, but Mike insisted that we have lunch first - its obvious that he waited for me, so who am I refuse good food, right?
But wait, was the food mixed with the magic water perhaps?  As we were heading towards the table, I had a feeling that I was done for :D ;D

Just as we were finishing up lunch, a client arrived to pick up his orders - ahh, Im saved! ;D While Mike showed the client the various svs speakers - I just grabbed my cam to take some pics.

SSS-01 Dipole Surround. The speaker grill has metal pegs - nice touch! ;)

SCS-01 2 x 6" mids with 1 x tweet. Sealed type no port. Could be stand mount or hang on wall.

MikeC explaining to the client the effects of drinking his magic water :D :D

STS-01 Tower/Floorstander

After everything was boxed up and Mike accompanying the client out, this finally left me alone to check out the SCS-01s that were hanging on the wall.
Looking at svs' website, I thought these SCS are small speakers - but they're really not. Each unit has 2 x 6" mids and a single tweeter. I was pleasantly surprised to see their true size in actual form.
Firing up Corrine May's "Fly Away" CD was a joy - even thou it was played by a dvdp powered by a Denon avr.
The sound was very clear and I was surprised how very neutral sounding the presentation was - not warm
and definitely not bright either. I was even pushing the volume up to fill Mike's 60sqm living room with loud music and was expecting my ears to ring - but there was none!
No enclosure resonance and no coloration - a very happy speaker to listen to!
If there's a downside, I would've wished it had more oomph in the lower frequency - but I guess thats why SVS makes subs anyway ;D

If you have ever imagined of using 3 center speakers for your HT LCR before, here's a perfect example of how a great match/sync speaker set would sound sonically. Unfortunately, Mike didnt have a SCS-01 center speaker for me to demo - so I could only imagine that would've been a blast!
The SCS-01s could be hanged on the wall as they're sealed units - no port. This makes you save both space & money for buying stands. So since you saved space, now you can place that SVS subwoofer below it ;)
The center channel even comes with its own base - in which you can either angle the speaker up or just fire straight - svs really thought of everything here!
Now I know why Mike's customers buy these speakers in complete sets - and not just by pairs. They even buy blindly without hearing them :o

I was just basically starting to put the speakers to its paces, but a quick glance at the tick-tock reminded me that I had to leave pretty soon to pick up my wife in Makati :(
Mike did persuade me to check out his HT upstairs and sample the Hulk's 10hz sonic cannon driven by his 3 Ultras, but had to desperately leave after a few minutes or suffer my wife's verbal cannons :D

Bitin talaga ako sobra - I still wanted to hear the surrounds as well as the STS-01 towers if Mike would grant my request in opening up some new stocks from his bodega ;D But alas, time was againts my fun today.........but I promised mike I will be back!

So if you guys are near Graceland......or heck, even if you're far - do check out these svs speakers and Im sure you wont be disappointed.........most specially since the 3 LCR costs less than 30k ;)

Oh hey mike - please dont apologize. My driver took all the wrong turns, so my planned 11am, became 12+ :P Besides, it was particularly traffic yesterday. Thanks nga pala for a lovely lunch - kaso iniwanan mo ako kaagad eh :D
Sayang I missed braders Dom and Martin yesterday - but I guess they were excited to get the new sub home - again, my congrats to the new svs club member!
I guess I missed Paul too who arrived later that afternoon - grabe pala ang Graceland every weekend!  :o

Oh will definitely be back! Kaya ikabit mo na yung bago mong 54" plasma - i-wall mount mo din kaya para bagay dun sa wall mounted na SCS-01s...........and this time, please mount a SCS center channel speaker ha?  :D ;D

Bitin man ako - but really had a great time spending it with your products! Thanks for being such a great host, Mike!  ;) Till next time!  ;D

Mike, thanks for having me in your place yesterday.

I arrived just when sir mardon was about to leave.

Mike's subs are really a different kind of beast. It can go low with very little distortion.
I do not think it was a good idea listening to his subs. Now, I find it difficult to listen to others  :D

Also, had the chance to listen to his SCS-01 bookshelves in stereo extensively.

I'll try to attempt my own review.
With my reference disc in hand, I got to put the bookshelves to the test.

I requested Mike to turn off the sub so that I can focus on the bookshelves alone.

I first tested the speaker with
Voices.

Alison Krauss "wouldn't have made a difference" from the best audiophile voices album.
Immaculately produced the song sounded great as expected.
Her voice lacked the air that I was looking for(but that's my preference na)

Doris Day "orange colored sky" I personally think she has one of the most challenging voices for speakers because it is quite high and kinda nasal. A lesser speaker would have made her voice painful to the ears.
I was surprised when the SVS speakers reproduced her voice pleasantly.

Nat King Cole's "The Very Thought of You" and George Micheal's "Kissing a Fool.
Their voices were full and warm and a joy to listen to.

Classical music
"Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" and "Dance of the Reed Pipes" sounded good as well but lacked that something extra that elevates classical music to a whole different level.

R&B & Jazz
Craig David's "7 Days" & "rendezvous"
Both songs features acoustic guitars. It sounded crisp and real.

Dance & Pop
Black Eyed Peas "Boom Boom Pow"
Here I felt the bass was definitely lacking.  ;D
Even mike felt the same way so we turned the sub on to enjoy the Boom Boom Boom's  :D

Conclusion
Please be informed that I listened to his speakers without my preferred CD player & Amp so take my review with a grain of salt. Also the listening area isn't the most ideal for stereo listening with concrete walls and big windows surrounding the room.

I find these speakers perform best with voices and acoustic music involving guitars & pianos.
If you're the type who loves listening to Hip-Hop and Pop music make sure to purchase one of mike's subs along with the speakers.

For it's price the speakers are a very good value.  :)

Mike, I hope to audition your dipole's next time.

Great review Juancho and it was a pleasure having your company even if it was just for a few minutes ;D
Inggit ako sa iyo - it seems you had more time with the SCS-01s than I did ::)
Its really a shame why Mike isnt actively marketing these speakers here in pdvd as I believe people should really hear and audition these great speakers.
As for the price, thats a no brainer! ;)

I'm looking for front and center speakers. Is the SCS-01 sensitivity the same as the specs for SCS-02, only 84.5 db?

Hopefully, this chart would help:

However, I think that SVS Speaker sensitivities are benign ;)

Now if Mike fixes his living room. I think it will help the speakers reveal their greatness.  :)

thanks sir mar for the 01 specs

sir conan, the S series speakers have low sensitivity because they are sealed.  svs opted to concentrate on the upper frequencies (assuming the use of a sub) rather than try to do everything and then be ordinary at everything.

but here's a reference sir:

84.5 db/ 1 w / 1 meter distance
that's anechoic (not inside a room, so add a few db's in room)

87.5db / 2 watts / 1 meter
90.5db / 4 watts / 1 meter
93.5db / 8 watts / 1 meter
93.5db / 16 watts / 2 meters
93.5db / 32 watts / 4 meters
96.5db / 64 watts / 4 meters

you only need 64 watts at 4 meters for ear destroying levels :)

Quote
For 95 decibels, the limit is four hours per day. For 102 decibels it's an hour and a half.

But you don't have to spend your life in a hushed library trying to protect your ears. You just need to be careful with the little hair cells inside your inner ear.

Friedland explained how they can be damaged:

Your inner ear has little cells called hair cells. When sound enters the inner ear, a fluid wave is produced that stimulates the hair cells. The hair cells pick up the sound and transmit it to the hearing nerve. If the sound is too loud, the fluid wave becomes very strong and can damage or break the little hair cells.

Quote
No more than 15 minutes of unprotected exposure to 100 decibels is recommended. Long-term exposure to 80-85 decibels or over can cause hearing loss.

peaks in SPL is ok, but it's the continuous use that hurts our ears

No sir, it means "it doesnt matter" ;)

Whatever sensitivity ratings SVS places on them - I believe they could easily be driven by any modest avr in the market today :)
