For high capacity storage 1tb above I suggest you go for the one with an external power for 500gig below pwede k n usb powered

powered ones:

cheaper / gb
higher capacities
uses more space and needs outlets to be usable


usb powered ones:

more expensive / gb
but portable

imho, functionally they are one and the same. but the price for portability is its more expensive. i have both in use, for my media players i use the powered ones and have a couple of portable usb powered once when i am on the go.
