IF YOUR DVD player isn't multi-region in this time & age, then its a partly CRIPPLED unit and ought to be return to the seller. During the early 2000s, much of the branded units are restricted like that - Sony being the worse stickler to the "rule." With Denon though, there is a way out to alter the Regional coding, in the early days with a laptop, and afterwards with "secret" numerical hacks right on the remote control. As I personally won't abide with an oppressive Regional-regional diktat, even my Blu Ray player is multi-region (at the very least it welcome Regions A, B and even C). Why what model and brand do you intend to buy? I suggest you choose the model with a Faroudja DCDi or a Reon HQV video chip that helps in the player's upscaling.

I could'nt agree with you more .... the Regional Coding is just not fair.

I am just using a computer to play DVDs. My Sony external DVD player accepts both Regions 1 and 3 movies. I also have a Pioneer DVD Writer and can also play both regions.

before I have a 1st generation dvd unit w/c you have to manually programmed the region codec so you can view different region DVDs, I got tired of of it so I got myself a DENON 1910 after that & it was a relief just put any disc on the tray & you're on your way to a great movie marathon  ;D

If you buy a region-locked DVD player (I recently had to replace a defective old Pioneer with an LG), I found a resource that can help you unlock it:

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks

Funny, because when I purchased the unit at Abenson, they even called LG, and LG proudly said their players cannot be unlocked. I got home and unlocked it after 1 minute of Googling.  ;D

=====

@Courage - Many R3 DVDs (especially those by Warner and Sony/Columbia) are actually multi-region discs that can be played on any player. Not the case for most Fox and Paramount/Universal R3 titles.

Here in MidEast PAL or region 2 the default region of all players being sold here but the salespersonsare more than happy to set the unit to region all in just couple of minutes. My first player was panasonic which played even DVDAudio, Pioneer and Philips.Purchased them locally and didn't have any problem playing R1, R2 & R3. Now, I have Oppo player which plays all regions except those bootleg movies being sold at the blackmarket. I have another cheap player to play those (cheap) movies or other formats...  ;D  :)
