Topic: Help in surround speaker placement

I've read at forums that surround speakers SHOULD be placed at ear level and parallel or slightly behind the "sweet spot".

anybody here have done otherwise?

I have a dilemma on my setup. I cannot put my surround speakers at ear level because of the following.
1. I cannot use speaker stands because I have 5 and 7 year old kids. Wire placement should be a problem too.
2. I don't have a wall to put my speakers on. 

I only have the ceiling to mount my speakers.

Finally my question:

Is it advisable to mount my speakers on the ceiling facing downwards to the "sweet spot"?

I have a Jamo 406 speaker set and my surrounds are a bookshelf type.

suggestions are highly appreciated.

Not ear level.  It should be slightly higher than ear level.

No, a ceiling mount is not advisable because the placement is too high.  But if it's the only option you have, then a ceiling mount will do.  

But don't mount it directly above the listening position.  Try placing it slightly behind and angled toward the listening position with a bracket that looks like this:

+1 on sir Barrister, just make sure na naka secure nang maayos yung speakers, we dont want it to fall habang dumadagundong yung sub tapos may mga bata pa pwedeng mabagsakan...

sir barrister.. i have the same problem.. plan ko to install a budget 7.1 system.... and ayaw ko cables sa sahig.. is it ok if i put all the speakers sa taas? i mean.. not just the front but all of them.... ? should they be mounted in an angle?

i plan to do a diy install.. pano ba dinadaan ng mga electrician wires sa kisame? hehehe

May recommended speaker placement and distances.  Pag sinunod mo ang recommendations, yon ang the best.  Habang lumalayo ka sa recommendations, pumapangit ang tunog.

Maiksi lang naman ang wiring for the front and center speakers, ok lang siguro kahit nasa sahig.  Pag  nilagay mo sa celiling, the sound of the actor's voice will come from the ceiling instead of the front.  Weird, di ba?

If you're forced to mount the speakers high, you angle them to the listening position as a compromise.  Mali pa rin ang direction, pero at least mas malapit nang konti sa tamang position.

Ang wiring sa kisame madali lang.  Gumagapang sa kisame ang electrician.  Mas mahirap ang maglatag sa loob ng wall.  Either baklasin niya ang wall, or padaanin sa loob with a fish tape.

what if.. hindi ko na gagawing mataas fronts.. ok lang ba mataas rears? para atleast yung rears... hindi storbo.. hehe thanks

Sir AC.. regarding speaker positioning.. try to ask sir nelson.. yung kanya is puro na ka ceiling mount pero OK parin ang sounds... hindi ko alam kung pano ginawa nya.. try to PM him po.. HTH...

Ang tamang position ng rears ay talagang medyo mas mataas sa ear level.

medyo maliit lang po room ko dahil.. bedroom lang po... and hindi naman po kataasan ang... ceiling... ill post pictures nalang po.. baka pwede iceiling height since hindi naman super taas... hehe

btw sir jnazareta.... i duno sir nelson po eh.. hehe nelson lang po talaga.. name niya sa pdvd? meron po siya thread about his system? baka po may pics?

guys ito po current setup ko... 2.1 speakers lang.. on both sides.. makalat po wires.. gusto ko po sana medyo ayusin kwarto ko kaya plano ko puros almost no wires.. plano ko po mount uphigh... i measured my room's ceiling po its 2.5meters plan ko din wall mount tv... kayalang pag may gagawin po ako.. i want to make sure.. sayang po yung wall pag butas ng butas.. hehe


my room's dimension is 4.5mx4.4m... ganito po ba setup pag 7.1?


btw.. yung red boxes po is... current speakers

if i may suggest, atras mo pa kaya a bit yung surrounds in such a way na aligned and equidistant from the listening position. yung surround back tama na yan. basta at least 2 to 3 feet above ear level pareho yung 2 sets ng surrounds

For me HT would be best the surrounds are above ear level, if installed w/ a ceiling mount just make sure it is aim at the sweet spot. This is more better to have a real-like movie feel, hope this help

just noticed that the front speakers are quite high unless they are tilted toward your listening position...
