Another ongoing comic book series is being adapted for television. Image Comics' Chew, by John Layman and Rob Guillory, has been greenlit for a pilot to be aired on Showtime.

Set in a world where a bird flu outbreak decimated the world's population, thus making chicken and other bird dishes illegal, Chew chronicles the exploits of Police Detective Tony Chu, who discovers that he's a Cibopath, one who gets psychic impressions from anything he eats--including people.

Circle of Confusion, the same group that does The Walking Dead TV series for AMC, will be producing the series, with Steven Hopkins directing.

...And very strange. I wonder how they'll tackle this. This will be harder to adapt to the screen compared to The Walking Dead.

Image Comics' Chew Getting Animated Adaptation, Followed by TV Series
August 01, 2013

A few months ago came the announcement that Image Comics' popular series "Chew" was no longer in development as a series at Showtime. Now it appears the rights to the comic have lapsed and according to The Hollywood Reporter, Jeff Krelitz of Quality Transmedia has picked them up.

Krelitz is currently prepping a direct-to-video animated adaptation of "Chew" and is meeting with potential showrunners for a live-action series of the comic. He previously sold the television rights for another Image series, "Peter Panzerfaust," to the BBC.

Felicia Day and Steven Yeun to Voice Chew Animated Feature
Source: The Hollywood Reporter

Chew, the upcoming animated feature adaptation of the acclaimed Image Comics series by John Layman and Rob Guillory, has cast two of its leads! The Hollywood Reporter brings word that "The Walking Dead" star Steven Yeun will voice the eponymous and homonymic Detective Tony Chu with Felicia Day ("The Guild") providing the voice of food critic and love interest Amelia Mintz.

The series, which launched in 2009, is officially described as follows:

Tony Chu is a detective with a secret. A weird secret. Tony Chu is Cibopathic, which means he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats. It also means he’s a hell of a detective, as long as he doesn’t mind nibbling on the corpse of a murder victim to figure out whodunit, and why. He’s been brought on by the Special Crimes Division of the FDA, the most powerful law enforcement agency on the planet, to investigate their strangest, sickest, and most bizarre cases.

Jeff Krelitz is directing the animated film, which is likely to skip a theatrical release and go straight to home video. Layman himself is providing the screenplay with Krelitz also producing alongside David Boxenbaum through their Heavy Metal brand. Layman and Guillory will also executive produce with Scott Boxenbaum and Dan Tischler.
