The Killing
« on: Apr 10, 2011 at 09:18 PM »

Based on the hit Danish TV series Forbrydelsen, The Killing focuses on three sets of stories that revolve around the murder of a teenage girl in Seattle--the detectives investigating the murder, the grieving family members, and the devious local politicians inexplicably linked to the case.

Comprising 13 episodes, each episode of The Killing marks one day of the investigation. I managed to catch the 2-hour premiere earlier tonight on JackTV, and this looks like another AMC hit in the making. Darkly atmospheric, the series reminded me of early seasons of The X-Files when it was still shot in Vancouver (where The Killing is also actually shot), and everything had a sinister air, with the cinematography and exterior shots having this movie-like quality.

Cast includes Mireille Enos, Joel Kinnaman, Billy Campbell, Michelle Forbes, Brent Sexton, Kristin Lehman, Eric Ladin.

The Killing's premiere last April 3, 2011 garnered the second highest ratings ever for an AMC TV series premiere, second only to The Walking Dead.

Rosales was never mentioned as Filipino, but the conversation with the woman at his residence gave it away: "Wala rito, wala siya rito"  ;D

Just the saw the 4th episode, which gradually uncovered another possible suspect.

Read some interesting trivia on the show's leads. Mireille Enos is the wife of actor Alan Ruck, who's known for his roles on Spin City and most recently on Persons Unknown. Swedish actor Joel Kinnaman was one of the contenders for the role of Thor, but his filming schedules for a movie in Sweden caused him to miss test shoots with Natalie Portman.

Yup, hopefully it gets better. It's been getting a lot of comparisons to Twin Peaks, but I think it's unfair--for one thing, The Killing doesn't have the supernatural nonsense that became the trademark of Twin Peaks. And the show's format of showing each episode as one consecutive day in the investigation really works well.

The story somewhat grinds to a halt for me every time the politicians are shown, but their stories are unavoidably intertwined with the murder; I'm really curious to see how it all plays out in the end.

Yup, the main story deals with the grisly murder of a teenage girl. Three subplots revolve around it--the detectives investigating the case, the family coping with their loss, and the politicians who have been linked to the murder through evidence.  The entire season follows this one case, with each episode marking one successive day of the investigation.

7 episodes have been aired--we're past the halfway point (this first season has 13 episodes).

I didn't get episode 11 at all. Was it put there to insinuate that ugly guy detective may have ambiguous feelings for ugly girl detective? Was it written to drive home the fact that ugly girl detective is really neglecting her kid in favor of the case? Because if that's all, those facts could have been established with a few lines of dialogue here and there. Otherwise, I think this episode was pretty useless.

But I have been loving the series up to this point.

I felt it was a good episode because we got much-needed character development and interaction between the two leads--it showed them as broken, messed up characters trying to deal with an even more messed up situation (the case).

The bad thing though was that this character development came so late in the series--it felt like a filler episode, with a plot that came out of nowhere (Sarah's son goes missing); it should've been done during the first half of the season.

The best thing about this episode for me was that there were no annoying politicians.  ;D

After thinking about it some more, I'm going to grudgingly agree with you.

I guess they needed this episode to show that there are consequences to them focusing on the case (at least in the case of ugly girl detective).

However, I'm still not 100% behind this episode because of the fact that it was still established in a couple of lines of dialogues in previous episodes how the case is taking its toll in their personal lives. Yeah it gave us a deeper understanding of the characters, but I would have hated it less if it didn't mean having to halt the story.

Has anyone seen episode 13 yet? Any good? Waited for the broadcast in JackTV last night and was disappointed to see that we are late by 3 episodes (I thought that we were getting the same episode as US.

The Killing has been renewed for a second season, which is probably why we got that ending.

That's it. I'm done with this show. That was a stupid way to end the season and a stupid way to reward fans who stuck with you for 12 weeks of meandering episodes.

Apparently, a lot of people agree with me:

You're not the only one--Twitter was going crazy with fans, or should I say ex-fans, who hated the ending. For me, that espn article you linked to said it all. I personally thought it was a cop-out and massive fail on the producers part to end it the way it did.
