good day, question lang po, if one buys a surplus cd player from the pier, does it have to be tinkered and repaired before it plays cds or gumagana na agad. if ever saan naman po magpaparepair nun?

HI Docsialu,

Don't get a CDP that has any kind of problem. Make sure the unit you buy plays various kinds of CDs. Better bring your own test CDs. A non working CD player is a nono.

My own experience is only between two brands, Sony ES series and a victor CDP. I opened up both units and In my opinion  the Sonys that I opened up had better innards. The CD Tray of the Sony is made of some kind of alloy. The Victor that I opened up, the 701 i think, is made of plastic. Get the Sony if you can (222ES, 227, 333, 337 etc.).

Test the unit. Check out all the function keys.

Hi Docsialu,

Also pls remember to take a close look at the innards of the CD player. You need to be meticulous on this. See for any signs of wear and tear eg the PCB should not have a very dark color - could be burn marks, e-caps are not bulged etc . Try to find things that are out of the ordinary.

The one I bought a few weeks ago had traces of somekind of liquid (I think it is oil) inside. Only found out when I brought it home. Luckily there was no damage although the right channel was a bit noisy. After I cleaned it all up, sound went good.

hi! ive been to the pier last week. i got a denon dcd-830 for 1500! it plays all of my cd's flawlessly.

it had minor scratches at the top cover, so i sprayed pylox to cover it up. then i used an automotive plastic polish for the front display panel and a few sprays of armorl all...and voila! it looks like new again! best thing is it works with my yamaha remote! although i wish there was a fader function and a remote power off, but that'd be asking too much.  :)

Sir Hans,
        Thanks for the info.
By the way, what features  in a CD player will you consider in selecting/ buying one unit? I've seen Sony, Victor and Technics surplus CD in the pier.(Besides good and functioning lens)?
Are there other  stores selling surplus besides CHATTY?

Depend sa mood kung type mo sya... hehehehe just kidding..

Usually look for headphone jack in case meron ka headphone, repeat and program mode for your favorite music kahit ilan ulit pwede  ;D ;D ;D ;D, yun direct access to the tracks are better than pressing the next button to get to the middle or end track.. pero tip when i look for cdp i usually check if the rca plug and headphone inputs are gold plated than silver one kasi remember most high models of cdp or even amp gamit gold plated sa mga high models, also check the weight of the player mas mabigat mas ok for me tapos power cord mataba mas maganda.. ( pero this is just what i do when scouting ) tapos play cdr cd no need to bring your own cd yun sample cdr nun shop pwede na kasi most of the time eh puro gasgas na yun and from quiapo  ;D ;D

happy hunting..

Hope to see one soon.  ;D  HDCD was introduced to the public in 1995.  It's already 10 years old.  Dapat meron ng surplus CD player with this feature.   ;D

It's a mixed bag. Depends really what kind of surplus CD player you got. Also, you need to remember the sound of these surplus cd players are quite different during their heyday. The e-caps are way past their life for one. These need to be replaced for them to sound their best.

once pantay na, ang plano ko sana is to increase the opamp supply from +/-9V to +/-12V for higher voltage swing and increased headroom. then replace the older digital filter (YM3619) with a newer microprocessor-based digital filter chip (YM3404B) dsp. kung papalarin pa, re-clock ko na din since yun digital transmitter (YM3613B) mo Jet ay may abilities for clock generation and digital output.

kung sakali man maging matagumpay yan, tsaka ko lang i-upgrade yun opamp mo kasi slow jam pa yun orig opamps, kailangan fast slew rate na pag natupad lahat ng plano ko.  ;)
