CONFLICTING MMFF BOX OFFICE REPORTS

THERE are conflicting reports about the first day gross of the Metro Manila Filmfest entries. The first to tweet with actual figures was Kris Aquino who stated: Enteng ng Ina Mo – P32.8 million, Panday - P20 m,  Segunda Mano – P18.25 m, Househusband – P17.3 m, Shake Rattle & Roll 13 – P15.9 m, Yesterday Today Tomorrow – P10.1 m, Manila Kingpin – P3 m.

Kris later made another tweet correcting herself. She said Enteng actually earned P38.5 m. If this were true, this means, it earned P18.5 million more than Panday, and that amount is also what Kris’ own Segunda Mano is said to have earned that day. Mind-boggling.

And here’s another tweet which our source is more credible since it’s said to come from someone who’s with the Metro Manila Development Authority: Enteng – P30.2 m, Panday 2 – P29.3, Segunda Mano – P12.4 m, Househusband – P10.5 m, Shake Rattle 13 – P9 m, Yesterday Today – P6.5 m, Manila Kingpin – P3 m.

Well, if you've got the likes of Gov. Bong Revilla and the Kris Aquino headlining competing entries, can't help politics creeping its nefarious hand in

‘Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story’: Worth the pain

At first blush, “Manila Kingpin: The Story of Asiong Salonga” is a film about death.  Mourners swarm around a coffin in a movie Asiong (E.R. Ejercito) and wife Fidela (Carla Abelllana) are watching.  Asiong tells Fidela he wants a funeral march just like the one they are watching.

It’s so un-Christmasy for a Metro Manila Filmfest entry shown during the longest holiday season of the year.  But you don’t have to blink twice to discover that its theme is as Christmasy as the traditional family noche buena that marks this season.

“Manila Kingpin: The Story of Asiong Salonga” is all about Tondo’s notorious gang leader who lived by the gun and died by the gun from 1924 to 1951.

But it’s also about a man whose love for his policeman-brother (played by Phillip Salvador) made him order his men to hold their fire in a shoot-out with the cops.

What's the use of having good visual effects technology if we're going to just ape Hollywood blockbusters if not in terms of plot, in terms of creature design and even shots (I saw a shot from the first Panday in the trailer that is lifted directly from The Two Towers)?

Watched Asiong Salonga yesterday, it was the best Filipino film I've seen in a long time.  My only complaint was the last act of the film.  It should have ended when Asiong was killed and his body was brought to his grieving wife.  I wonder if the chaotic shoot-out during the funeral in the last act was the added scene which the original director was complaining about? Anyway, congrats to Asiong for winning the Best Film.

Filipino films: they don’t make us think

The type of films Filipino filmmakers make reflect the type of people most Filipinos are – people lacking in substance. Just looking at the list of entries for this year’s Manila Film Festival, you can already tell that not a lot of thinking was involved in the process of making them. Even the titles leave nothing to the imagination of the audience. Most of the actors playing the lead roles are the same ones we’ve seen since we were kids or some hot young flavor-of-the-month of one producer or another.

Take the 13th instalment of Shake, Rattle and Roll, and ask: What else can people expect to get out of it? Not much, obviously. People are probably watching it for the eye candy. Every year the film features starlets parading and pouting for the camera hoping to look cute enough to win an award. That’s right. Talent in acting is not really a criterion for winning an acting award in the Philippines.

MMFF belongs to movie people

The best news we heard as 2011 was just about to expire and self-destruct (with Tropical Storm “Sendong” indubitably affirming its being an annus horribilis, not to be fondly remembered) was the move by some enlightened people to transfer control of the annual Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF)—from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) back to the purview of the local movie industry.

Reflected glory

It is really about time because, in the hands of the politicians “gone show biz,” the yearend cinematic festival has given us precious few moments truly worth celebrating.

Some Metro mayors and other savvy and canny politicos tended to use the film fest as an occasion to make themselves more popular and better known, by way of the “reflected glory” they enjoyed in the company of film stars, who aided their political campaigns come election time.

Another bummer in terms of loss of quality in the film fest’s entries was some movie industry leaders’ desire to field the most popular productions for children and family audiences, so that the most money could be made to subsidize a host of “worthy” film-related services and advocacies.

Not without a fight

The intent may have been admirable, but the resulting decline in quality was reprehensible, because, the “only-Filipino-productions” festival was originally conceptualized to precisely showcase the best movies that our filmmakers could produce.

That part of the MMFF problem persists, but it can be addressed and solved after the festival shall have reverted to movie people’s hands—where it belongs.

Is there even a ghost of a chance for this “back to the film industry” move to succeed? First, it isn’t likely that many politicians will want to give up the MMDA’s control over the MMFF—with all of the perks attached to it—without a good fight.

Tit for tat

So, who will do the fighting for the industry? Why, all of the stars who have themselves turned successful politicians! Talk about a classic case of tit for tat, this is it.

Luckily enough, movie people can count on a number of stars in key political positions, all the way up to quite a number of the members of the Philippine Senate, to do the political in-fighting for them. So, if enough of those stars-turned-politicians can be persuaded to pitch in, success could soon be at hand.

Bigger question

The bigger question is, what will happen to the MMFF after it has reverted to the movie industry’s control? We note with sadness that some industry leaders were complicit in some politicians’ efforts to subvert the industry showcase for their own ends. So, the “new” or “renewed” MMFF should be on its guard against dubious “leaders” who will work against its reforms.

First and foremost, the festival has to go back to its initial reason for being—to showcase the best (not the most commercially popular) films that Filipino artists of the cinema are capable of making. Some industry leaders will counter that seminal back-to-basics move by spreading the fear that it would result in reduced income and funds for the festival’s beneficiaries.

It can be done

However, a look back to the original Manila Film Festival’s start will disprove that downbeat contention. Before the MMFF, only two or three movie houses in Manila screened Filipino films. But, immediately after the new festival successfully showcased the best local movies, the viewing public’s colonial attitude changed, and many more theaters opened their doors to Filipino films, resulting in more movies profitably being made, eventually resulting in Philippine cinema’s second Golden Age.

If the festival’s standards aren’t watered down, the viewing public will respond in kind. It can and should be done.

Let's get one thing straight: The MMFF movies are big hits because the audience is virtually held hostage. We have no choice. Nothing else is showing. Many Pinoys only bring their entire families to the movie theatres during the holidays—the festival has become an annual tradition. So if an MMFF movie is a blockbuster it doesn't mean the public loved it; it means the public wanted to go to the movies and they thought it would be worth their trouble.

And since these movies "made money", producers are justified in turning out the same drivel the next year. It's a cycle of stupidity that shows no sign of ending.
