Best Restored DVD
« on: Jul 05, 2003 at 02:29 PM »
Hi. I'm starting to collect timeless and classic DVDs (eg. West Side Story, Giant, Sound of Music) What to you is the best restored and remastered in your collection. Thanks  :)

Singin' in the Rain and Citizen Kane are both excellent transfers. Warner used the same restoration team for both titles if I'm not mistaken.

I'd have to go with My Fair Lady, since aside from being restored, it has an entire commentary track about the restoration process!  :)

Vertigo, La Grande Illusion, My Fair Lady, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Singin' In the Rain

was not too pleased with the restoration of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. movie looked and sounded real old and worn. found the movie hardly audible and the picture hardly movie quality like. was honestly expecting a better product like what criterion did with Life of Brian

Offhand these are at what i have or used to have and can recall:

On Warner

Whatever Hapenned To Baby Jane (b&w)
King Of Kings
Wizard Of Oz
Casablanca (b&w)
A Streetcar Named Desire (b&w)
Ben-Hur
My Fair Lady
The Exorcist
North By Northwest

Other labels:

Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs
Bridge On The River Kwai
Lawrence Of Arabia
The Ten Comandments
Spartacus
Cleopatra
The Sound Of Music
Fiddler On The Roof
West Side Story
The French Connection
The Godfather Box Set ( 1 & 2)
The Longest Day (b&w)
Guns Of Navarone

A lot of old titles on the Warner label has been restored to some extent. Some titles got excellent digital transfers from well-preserved films, not necessarily restored.  A number of them still has some evident film grain and scratches visible during dark scenes like in Fiddler, The Exorcists and on the openning scene in Bridge oin the River Kwai.  But overall, nothing objectionable.

Also those old Sean Connery James Bond flicks look good.  THough am not sure if they were deliberately restored for DVD.

Actually, I felt the other way around.  ;D I was disappointed with the Life of Brian Criterion transfer. The sound was creaky at times, and once or twice, I thought I saw scratches on the film.

The Holy Grail transfer was not perfect though, and I probably should not have included it in my list.

Lawrence of Arabia Superbit

Miles better than the first release. It probably has the widest difference between a Superbit and its "normal" version.

The Limited Edition is on top. Superbit at the bottom. Talk about night and day!
