Philips has recently launched a midrange 3D Blu-ray player which features both 3D support and Wi-Fi connectivity. Like the rest of the company's 2011 models, the player now supports a wider range of media formats such as MKV and RMVB can be played back from USB devices or via DLNA compatible devices such as your PC. Here are our first impressions of this player.

Upside
Perhaps the best feature of the BDP5200 would be its built-in Wi-Fi based on the latest Wireless-N standard. Most Blu-ray players in this range offer only an external Wi-Fi dongle that would take up a USB slot.

Users can also access Philip's Net TV function, to watch videos from sources such as YouTube and download apps to enjoy other online services. The Web browser included, however, does not support Adobe Flash.

An external USB keyboard can be connected to the BDP2000 for text input.

iOS users can also download the "MyRemote" app to control the player from their iPhone/iPads/iPod touch. Additionally, if you have more than one Philips audio/visual product in your home network, the app will automatically pick it up and add it to the list. Sadly, there isn't an Android version available at the moment.

Downside
The player's lack of built-in memory to enable BD-Live function for storing movie interactive content downloaded from the Internet. You'll either have to sacrifice a USB port or insert an SD card to access the features from either BD-Live or Net TV.

Additionally, this player comes with a digital coaxial output, which is not commonly found in most home theater-in-a-box (HTIB) systems that are equipped with optical inputs. Other Philips products on the other hand, would most probably be compatible with the BDP5200.

Outlook
At S$299(US$248), the midrange BDP5200 costs the same as several entry-level players such as the Panasonic DBT110. You'll be hard-pressed to find an alternative with similar specifications for an identical price.
