hi all,

going through pdvd looking for a discussion thread on fullrange drivers... monreq has a discussion on zigmahornets, and another on insights on audio nirvana, alexg also has his fostex project, was hoping we could have this thread where we could exchange ideas on widebander matters.

to kick things off i'm going to bring up the JohnBlue Audio JB3...

i recently purchased a pair, after auditioning the speakers thrice (thanks to audio amplified for their patience). it's a sweet and detailed pair, tight and well-pronounced bass even as the frequency range is stated to be at 90Hz lowest.

after two days of careful listening i discovered the distortion that was mentioned in the online reviews, at certain high vocal notes that coincide with a particular bass frequency, the whizzer cone resonates like a reed. yet, overall the JB3 remains to be an excellent pair given the dimensions and price point.

currently i match these (relatively inefficient) 87dB drivers with either a 10watt 300B SET or my 18watt 6L6 PushPull, they easily go up to louder-than-comfortable listening levels, and i rarely go beyond. never been past 12 o'clock with both amps.

would like to hear other reviews and/or suggestions on speaker mounting, as i am planning to DIY mounting the jb3s against a wooden wall, either side of a wide window.

this is one aspect of audio that I would like to explore next year. Voigt pipes cguro plus a small class A amp.

A john Blue JB8 speaker pinoy version in the making. Well tuned and much improved version of flagship JB8. Nice to pair with quality tripath 2050 amp.

been contemplating on the following:
1. a-audio 8" (i guess i would need to schedule an extensive auditioning of the same)
2. andrew sevilla's tang band TQWT floorstander
3. audio nirvana 8" cast frame, if i find the funding and willingness to build the cabinet

but to have a Pinoy version JB8, that's something to be excited about.

SET-UP SUGGESTIONS:

i bought sir audiobyte's fostex FE207E double horns, despite their great soundstaging and height imaging, i am contemplating on mounting them on a wooded platform to increase the height of the driver axis since i will be positioning them along the long side of my bed. i am intending to do my soundtripping while on my bed, hehe.

sir audiobyte has expressed that placing them on spikes would alter the cabinet's low frequency characteristics. so i need to replicate the cabinet's being placed on a solid floor. another issue is that i have wood floors.

i am thinking, a flat platform with carpet/rubber mat, on legs. i am open to suggestions.

Enjoying to the max my New FR Floorstander JB8 Pinoy edition. The imaging was excellent. Listening to Pink Floyd Classics. Classic YES albums, Classic RUSH album, Van Halen I and II, Procol Harum, The Doors and Emerson lake and Palmer. Those are some of the classic Rock that blew me away. You can hear the guitar distortion, the real sound of drums and cymbals up to the smallest one, the Bass flucking, the real sound of piano up to the last note. Now I know why they say, If you love music and serious about it... Look for a good pair of FR. If you want more details look for Alnico FR.

Now I could say I will never go back to standard speaker with xover that separates the high, mid and low.

its a good thing that more and more people have learned to appreciate widebanders/ fullrange speakers.
when I told Soundgarden that I will never go back to speakers with crossovers (unless of course for HT) he was skeptical, but now I'm really happy that he feels the same way!

Maraming salamat sa iyo Brader Shrek7 at ang may salarin na si Brader Monreq. I was really skeptical nong una but when I heard my friend Omega 8 XRS with his trends combi e. Doon na nagsimula ang lahat. I told myself eto ang hinahanap ng tenga ko the proper way of listening to music . I heard a lot of Branded speakers and own some high end too but my search is over when i heard and own a Full range speaker and maximize the potential of my first single driver FR by asking aaudio to build me a good enclosure and I was not disaapointed with the outcome of the speaker enclosure. With excellent tune of the enclosure it really matches my FR alnico. Now I learned to listen more seriously to music and it really envelopes me to the sound of music with the single Driver Full range....

If you are tired of listening to music with too much Bass and Treble the only ticket to make you feel you are inside the music is the Full range speaker.

which is why later, i am going to buy my first A-audio FR, and put handles on the top-side! para meron din akong "garden speakers", hehe, portable, from my room to the backyard garden or to the front-door garden kung saan masarap mag chill. hindi ko nga lang mabubuhat yung mga amp ko ambibigat, kaya dared ang ipapang-tulak ko sa kanila.

inlab akong muli sa JohnBlue JB3. pursuant to monreq's and soundgarden's recommendations, i changed the amp i use to run the JB3 with a fisher 100watter, and OMG...

to those who want to give it a listen, i can accommodate you as long as our schedules permit. besides, this hobby/passion is 'for sharing' (that's why we play it loud sometimes), otherwise we'd be stuck with our headphones. i have a pair of nice headphones by the way which i have not really used since i got into FRs.

Our pleasure to assist somebody like you bro. If you replace some old caps of Fisher to polypropylene caps in the power amp section, mas maganda pa yan. DC Power caps and input caps. But if you plan to sell it later to upgrade, don't wast time to replace the caps.

naka hd555 ako , pero moded, madami ako headphone dati pero laat halos binenta ko na, iniwan ko lng hd555, koss porta pro, pero may na gustohan nanaman ako, audeze lcd-2 kaso $1000k price tag, 3pcs lng meron dito sa pinas, ganda ng tunog sobra
