CITADEL
Six-episode first season premieres on Prime Video on April 28, 2023
Starring Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Stanley Tucci

SYNOPSIS:

Eight years ago, Citadel fell. The independent global spy agency – tasked to uphold the safety and security of all people – was destroyed by operatives of Manticore, a powerful syndicate manipulating the world from the shadows. With Citadel’s fall, elite agents Mason Kane (Madden) and Nadia Sinh (Jonas) had their memories wiped as they narrowly escaped with their lives. They’ve remained hidden ever since, building new lives under new identities, unaware of their pasts. Until one night, when Mason is tracked down by his former Citadel colleague, Bernard Orlick (Tucci), who desperately needs his help to prevent Manticore from establishing a new world order. Mason seeks out his former partner, Nadia, and the two spies embark on a mission that takes them around the world in an effort to stop Manticore, all while contending with a relationship built on secrets, lies, and a dangerous-yet-undying love.

"Citadel" is executive produced by Anthony and Joe Russo through their AGBO banner, with David Weil set as the showrunner.

The show is meant to serve as the mothership for several planned spin-offs based in local countries and performed in local languages: “Citadel” series set in Italy and India are already underway, with another Mexico-based show also in the works. Each "Citadel" show is locally created, produced, and filmed in-region, and stars top talent, forming a distinct global franchise.

“Citadel” boasts a $185 million budget.

‘Citadel,’ Amazon’s Pricey and Troubled Drama, Renewed for Season 2

Citadel, the expensive and troubled drama from the Russo brothers that has been in the works since 2018, is getting a second chapter.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the series starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden has been renewed for a second season ahead of its April 28 debut. It’s unclear how many episodes season two will feature; the freshman run will consist of a mere six episodes.

As The Hollywood Reporter reported last September, the budget for Citadel has ballooned to north of $200 million following rounds of reshoots after half of the show’s creative team departed amid creative differences. The series currently on track to become the second-most-expensive show ever made, trailing only The Rings of Power.

Among the changes, Citadel parted ways with showrunner Josh Appelbaum and director Brian Kirk and the Russos hired David Weil, the creator of Amazon’s recently concluded drama Hunters, to take over the show, provide a more grounded take and oversee $75 million in reshoots to a budget that was already earmarked at $160 million.

Sources say Weil will remain as showrunner for season two, with the Russos expected to direct multiple episodes.

Currently rated 52% at Rotten Tomatoes with 54 critic reviews counted. Audience Score at 79%.

Critics Consensus:  Citadel spares no expense but still feels underdeveloped, yielding a fairly fun spy caper that nonetheless creaks under the weight of its own exorbitance.

Nice naman…completed Season 1. Parang bitin naman 6 episode lang, but I like it. Can’t wait for next season where the younger Dahlia will be the core of the story.
