I read that this might happen a few weeks ago. It's a bit weird that it's only 5 episodes. I was thinking at least 7, so he'd be in half of the season. But last season's showrunners really didn't know how to write for Troy. He became peripheral, and of all the actors, you could really see the plastic "What the crap am I doing on this show?" expression on his face the most. Still, this is a dick move. I remember Henry Winkler's interview when asked why he stayed with Happy Days until the very end, and he said, "I would never leave the show that saved me from obscurity."
