Bought a cheap SAMSUNG player for my kid. Asked the salespeople if it reads all formats. When I tried a region 1 disc on it, the monitor said "Can't read. Wrong region." I thought it was just a matter of changing some settings but I couldn't find anything on the menu. Had to bring it back to SM and replace it. The salesman said "Region 3 kasi tayo sir." Told him it was like my 7th DVD player. This was the first time I encountered a one-region only unit. I left with a SONY.

I have always known Samsung to be region 3 only.  I bought a Samsung player in 2007 at S&S and it was region 3 only. Folks at S&S old me Samsung players that they sell are really like that.
Had to perform a "hack" procedure to enable multi region capability.
Pioneer players are known to be region free out of the box. Had 2 pioneers that are region free and sellers always tell me that is a standard thing for their players.

We have a Samsung BD player from the US which only plays region 1 DVDs. Is there a way we can make it play at least the DVDs region free?
Going 3D, at last! (And I don't care it it's a fad.)

Shouldn't the salespeople know this? They should be better informed or tell customers outright that the unit can only play region 3

Unfortunately, some sales agents are wont to promising you the moon for a quick sale. Which is why it's advisable to do some preliminary research on an intended purchase before making the jump (or not).

(It doesn't help, though, that sometimes even the manufacturer's own website misstates a product's specs. *cough* LG Phils *cough*)

Actually I think all branded DVD players are locked to a certain region.  Hence the region number at the back.  But most companies just unlock this automatically for you at a certain time.  Anyway, anya's link is pretty comprehensive and should include your DVD player.

(might be wrong about everything I said though) ;D
