Someday if I have the money, I will go to pier and buy several good surplus amps just like you did. Sadly, the MX-1 purchase has put a strain on my budget : (

johnlen, i think you're already in the big league with the MX-1... while i'm still fiddling in the 100wpc integrated range, you're already in the dual mono 200wpc separates range.  while i'm doing trial & error risking my 4k on a possible lemon, you went straight to The Ultimate One.

that's what i call getting it right the first time.   ;D ;D

Can anyone recommend a good reliable, honest vendor at the pier's Jap surplus stalls?

yup!  meron doon stereo amps worth 2.5k.  pero ito yung mga low-powered silver retro look na pang 70's.  nag test kami nung technics sa7700 against onkyo integra and luxman pero masyadong bright ang tunog, halos walang bass.  medyo madumi pa yung knobs kaya may malakas na static sound pag adjust mo ng tone control.  if you can spend an extra 1k, this would be a better bet: Denon PMA-390.  i've had 2 of these already.

see pictures here --> http://page6.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/f6545324

this model was my very first amp, bought in japan in 1993.  there's still one selling at the pier for 3.5k.  the specs doesnt say much about its power at 50wpc but it can go loud & clean... 70wpc in 6ohmz, 100wpc in 4ohms.  i once attached a 4ohm cerwin vega 12" passive car sub in the left channel.  stupid me, i attached it in parrallel to my speakers, so the amp was probably carrying a 3ohm load all that time... a few months later the relay switch stopped working.  anyway, when it was still working, it was pretty darn loud & clean.  my favorite track then was the chesky drum test.  you could feel the pounding of the drums in your chest.  its got Denon's trademark laid back & warm sound as i realized 6yrs later when i got a Denon receiver.  this model is still in production in japan as the remote-controlled pma-390IV.  price & specs would put it in the same market as nad c320 or rotel 931.

be careful when buying there... make sure its not a lemon.  ;)

ang price depende sa power consumption dahil di nila alam ang totoong RMS power rating, so assume na lang na pag 2-channel, power rating is a little less than half the power consumption.  dats why i always go for 200W and above para at least malapit sa 100watts per channel RMS rating.

thanks!

I suggest that when buying stereo amps bring your speakers along so you'll have an idea how it would sound in your set up.  Remember that speaker-amp matching are more important than good amp reviews.  Even if an amp has good reviews, it might not sound good on the speakers that you pair it with.

In my little experience with jap surplus amplifiers, the best sounding i've heard so far are the Luxman or Alpine/Luxman amps.

Just my 2 cents. ;)

good idea nirvblakr!

mga sir, balak kong bumili ng bagong lumang amp. pinag-pipilian ko eh;

Trio KA-7300 (Left and right independence separate power source adoption 2 power transformers 4 block capacitors -Effective output 65W + 65W)
P 2,800
http://www.niji.or.jp/home/k-nisi/ka-7300-h2.jpg
http://www.niji.or.jp/home/k-nisi/ka-7300-in.jpg

Sansui AU-D607F Extra (circa 1981, 200+W )
P 3,000

Sansui AU-D707X (circa 1984, 200+W)
P 4,200

Denon  PMA 701 (175W)
P 3,000

i'm buying the amp for my turntable setup, so i don't need digital amps. maganda yung Sansui kasi may MM or MC selector siya. maganda yung gimmick ng Trio kasi independent yung Left and Right channels, kaso nga lang ang speaker eh (off, A, B) walang (A+B).

during demo try to turn the volume & tone control knobs.  if its really dirty/rusty you'll hear static in the speakers.

characteristic nito is bright and powerful/aggressive, so it goes better with my friend's laid back wharf diamond than my bright mordaunts.

i have a sony 333ES, the sound characteristic is: tight bass & laid back treble so its a good match if your speakers are too bright.. but not a good match if you have a laid back tweeter like wharf diamond.

Another word of advise:

Do not be deceived by looks na kung makinis eh maganda tumunog.  Sometimes yung mukhang bulok eh yun pa ang maganda tumunog.

fakelondongenius-  I have not auditioned the Trio that you've mentioned but I had a Denon jap surplus stereo amp before and warm and "mataba" tumunog.  A very good and powerful amp.   ;D

akyatbundok - waahhh! lalong nadagdagan yung options ko!

nirvblakr
- dalawa nalang yung malapit sa puso ko, yung Trio KA-7300 (for the dynamic crosstalk) tsaka yung Denki Onkyo (the warmth of the sun)

hehe.. pre congrats on your would-be purchase.  ingat lang sa lemon, test mo mabuti.  alin nga palang turntable gamit mo, surplus din ba?  interested din ako mag analog someday.  if you want you can audition the surplus amps i have, meron akong 3 brands sa bahay - sony, onkyo at luxman.  iba-iba ang tunog.  (for reference lang ha, theyre not 4sale)

ive been looking at doc nirv's speaker gallery; its really possible to have a great sounding setup for such a small budget.

set up namin nun eh Pioneer SA-V700 135W na amp, Kenwood GE-100IIB equalizer and Pioneer PL-512 turntable. lahat yan eh bili sa pier except our Micro Speakers, hehe. wala pang nasisira diyan mula noon.

yes! i'll be glad to try your amps pero huwag muna ngayun. baka mabago ang budget eh, mapabili pa ako ng Integra okaya yung ES. patay tayo diyan! ;D
