KimosabeSAN,

6L6 ba?? hmmm alam ko sweet yun mids ng EL34 while 6L6 naman medyo laidback and  may pagka vintage ang sound.. pero i maybe wrong with 6L6. ;D ;D

ratratan ba kamo? eh di 2SC2922 at 2SA1216.  ;D ;D ;D joke lang poh and peace!

The 6L6 family is a very old tube type. I believe audio was preety young, when this tube was developed in the USA. People in the audio industry wanted something more powerful than a triode, 2A3's or 300A or 300B. So this "Beam Power Tetrode was developed, it was known as 807, and had the Plate connection on top because of the high voltage requirement. From this design the 6L6 evolved. Several variants soon were developed , 6L6G and then 6L6GB and finally the 6L6GC, also the 5881 cam into the picture.> It was so successful that most amplifiers made in the USA used this tube to great extent from 1930 to the late 1970. Users of 6l6 where McIntosh, Scott, Fisher, Heath, Eico etc. and many many guitar amplifiers used them too like Fender, Ampeg.
Meanwhile in Europe, anothe tube was making the raves, that was the EL34. The EL34 IS A PENTODE, SLIGHTLY DIFFENT FROM 6L6 which is A BEAM TETRODE, but pratically just as efficient. But as competition goes it was a one upmanship game, the EL34 had a higher plate voltage (800V) versus the 6L6GC and had a higher power rating. It was so popular in Europe that the Americans made its own version too, the 6CA7. This tube was popularized in the US by Dynaco in its famous ST70s.

They are different tubes therefore they sound different too. They have the same PIN connections but differnt ratings and bias requirements, but they are are also similar in some aspects.

Although the 6L6 was introduced by RCA in 1936, it was widely believed that RCA licensed it from the British company M-OV. A year earlier, a British valve called the "Harries Valve" (named after it's inventor) is already being sold where the 6L6 became a descendant of.

An American tube with British origins :D

The 6L6 family is a very old tube type. I believe audio was preety young, when this tube was developed in the USA.

A year later, M-OV released the KT66, which is popular with QUAD and LEAK amplifiers of that time.

that's what I like with 6L6.  lots of variants, and if your amp allows, can tube roll a lot.  and not very expensive -- except kt66 perhaps ;).

For me, for the tube newbie it's safer to go for EL-34, because it has more power than two you can use whatever speakers you want (possible to share your speakers with your HT). I bet All of the amplifiers mentioned above sings well, but it all depends on your preference and equipment matching.
If I'm not mistaken these are the power ratings of the following:
el-84 ------10 - 12 watts
6l6  ------- 18 - 22 watts
el34 ------- 30 - 40 watts
(assuming PP configuration)
After the tube you will never listen to music with your SS Amp (Receiver). Of course high-end class A amp, sounds as pretty as tubes. But this is just me. You will never know the truth unless you hear it by yourself. Audition! Audition! Audition!
Try to join some listening session! Ask Superman & Hans Adrian for their experties & experiences with tubes!

Sir Hans, my question was if there's also tranny cover (tama ba?) for the tube rectified version. Judging from the pic kc, parang sobrang lapit na nung tranny sa EL34's.

Sir Slayer, I believe Sir Hans' reply answers your query.

Thanks uli :)

ianmorales,

it also depends on what type of music you're listening. some AMX owners here prefer EL34 because of its versatility... pwede pang vocals... pwede pang rock.... just my dos centimo.

ianmorales...if i were you, bring your favorite CDs or LPs and try out the 3 amps, then whatever appeals to you then get it...agree with the replies that maybe the EL-34 may capture your taste...but again, audition is the key...who knows, you may like a 6550 or KT-88 :D :D :D
