12au7 tubes - RCA "BlackPlates" and Telefunken "Smooth Plates"

now which of the two telefunkens, for me its the 12ax7.

BTW, i'm currently sourcing a pair of mullard 12au7's in hongkong. the contact person of the shop will give me feedback within the week on this.

sir kim pa pm naman price para ma compare ko kuha dito sa pinas? di ba pag import bili mo dollar pambayad. isa pa sir question yong 12ax7 na tube pwede ba palitan ng 12au7? hindi ko pa na try pero ano kaya mangayari?

i think the Ei 12ax7 tubes on my AMX EL34 amp might be nearing extinction since one of them lights up like a bulb whenever i turn on the amp, so i'm on the lookout for a replacement..... i've also read some tube reviews mostly for guitar amps, and you're right about the Teles...... nothing short of a Mullard would be probably sound better.

but for my budget (1.5k) i'm not sure if i can go Tele, unless i get a good package deal like when hans got his Tele+RCA for "only" 3k (?)..... i read some good reviews on the JJ/Tesla current production tubes and the JAN/Philips.... i think they are near my budget, any comments on these?

for the AMX preamp, i got an instant upgrade when i changed my rectifier tube from Matsushjta 5ar4 to RCA "sexy bottle" 5u4g..... hans was kind enough to lend me his stock Hitachi 12au7 and between his/john's Hitachi and my Matsushjta, i think the Hitachi was the better tube, so congrats to the new owner of john's preamp you already have the better tubes for the preamp.

andrew seems to be testing various combinations of budget tubes on the preamps.... john's version is slightly different from hans with the Sylvania 12ax7 phono tubes.... note: hans got all-hitachi tubes and i got all matsushjta tubes.

onga pre, kung sakali papagawa ng preamp, specify nyo na kung alin tube gagamitin, or better yet provide your own Tele or RCA blackplates para ma-tweak dun sa tube na gusto mo.

rectifier - rca 5u4g
linestage - hitachi
cd buffer - hitachi (or matsushjta)

gamit ko ngayon combination ng hitachi at matsushjta.... malinaw mids & highs ng matsu kaso rolled off ang low bass.... hitachi may bass kaya gusto yung combo.

yup it improved..... it was in one of the mini-sessions with hans & kimpao doing the tube rolling; i thought the rca sexy bottle sounded the best but it could be because it was the right tube to use..... i think the preamp's circuit was really designed for the 5u4g but they probably ran out of 5u4g's at the time so they used what was available.... just a hunch because hans & john's babies both use 5u4g.

Be careful from changing rectifier tube from 5U4G to 5AR4, coz the latter has a low voltage drop and if you're operating the preamp into high operating point, this might damage your driver tube....

thanks for the warning bro.... does this mean a change from 5AR4 to 5U4G is safer than vice versa?

i'm curious why my stock tubes were different from hans' & john's.... but when i made it the same it actually got better, so i thought he probably used matsu instead of hitachi for the driver tubes coz he knows it can handle the higher operating point of the 5ar4 (?).... just speculating.

Sir Ultimate malabo ata?? plan to change the layout and chassis, re-config the transfo for 30 watts na lang, add another rectifier so SS & Tube in one amp and lastly STC (super triode connection).

hay... hope ready sya before the push pull shootout.. top contender Jetok's amp versus our reference push pull Dynaco ST70 ni SenoR ST PaLdO kimpao...

It is safer to do tube rolling from 5AR4 to 5U4G since you're just running the preamp to lower B+.... Did john & han's preamp using 5AR4 rectifier tube?

If you're using the same specs of power trafo and you're only one using 5AR4 tube. Andrew might give you a preamp operating on different operating point. I assume that operating the preamp using 5U4G gives you the sonic quality rather than running the preamp with higher B+..... Just remember, running the the tubes on higher B+, you're also running it on a near distortion....
